Product information "Bürkle Scratcher powder sampler, V4A stainless steel, 5 ml, 5347-0005"
Free-flowing powder can be easily collected using a screw conveyor or a scoop; clumped or cohesive material, however, cannot: it gets stuck at the opening or blocks the conveying mechanism. The Scratcher powder sampler solves this problem with a scraping edge on the collection chamber, which pushes the material directly into a sealable inner tube rather than simply collecting it.
Scraping edge instead of a screw conveyor
As the probe penetrates, the scraping edge on the collection chamber scrapes off the sample material and pushes it into the inner tube. This also works for substances that tend to clump or do not flow freely into an opening, such as damp powders or highly compacted bulk materials. The inner tube can then be sealed so that the sample can be removed in a controlled manner.
Constant penetration depth, three chamber sizes
The penetration depth is a constant 1,000 millimetres for all three versions, making them suitable for deeper containers such as drums or big bags. The sample volume is controlled by the length of the collection chamber: 22 millimetres chamber length for 5 millilitres, 45 millimetres for 10 millilitres, 110 millimetres for 25 millilitres. The collection chamber begins 92 millimetres from the tip in each case; the tube diameter is 25 millimetres.
Material for food and pharmaceutical applications
The Scratcher is made of 1.4404 stainless steel (V4A, AISI 316L), which, according to the Bürkle collective certificate, has been tested for food contact in accordance with EU Regulation 1935/2004. This makes the sampler suitable for use in the food, pharmaceutical, chemical and materials science sectors, where cohesive substances typically occur.
Identifying the limits of the conveyor spiral
It is often only during use that it becomes apparent whether a material is too sticky for a conveying spiral: if powder sticks to the spiral or clogs the conveying mechanism instead of being transported evenly, this indicates cohesive properties. In such cases, the scraping edge of the Scratcher is the more robust solution, as it actively scrapes the material away rather than passively conveying it.
Typical applications
- Sampling of cohesive, caking or non-free-flowing powders and solids
- Incoming goods inspection of damp or heavily compacted bulk materials from big bags, drums and smaller containers
- Quality assurance in food, pharmaceutical and chemical plants handling substances with poor flow properties
- Supplement to motorised conveying systems when the sample material is too sticky for a screw conveyor
Handling during insertion
The Scratcher is inserted by hand into the bulk material, like a sampling lance, until the full penetration depth of 1,000 millimetres is reached. Unlike the motorised PowderProof lances, the movement is entirely manual, which is sufficient for smaller sample quantities and occasional use, and does not require a battery or charger.
Select chamber size according to sampling purpose
The 5-millilitre chamber is usually sufficient for a small retention sample or an initial visual inspection. If the sample is to be used for several laboratory analyses, the 10-millilitre version is the more practical choice. For larger batch inspections or when several sub-samples are to be combined into a composite sample, the 25-millilitre chamber offers a correspondingly larger volume per puncture.

Cleaning between two samples
As the scraping edge pushes material directly into the inner tube, only a small amount of residue usually remains on the outside of the scraper. A quick wipe-down after removing the sample is usually sufficient before the sampler is ready for the next batch. When switching between different substances, it is also advisable to thoroughly clean the inner tube to ensure that no residues from the previous sample contaminate the new batch.

Service and procurement
For free-flowing powders and granules where a motorised feed screw is sufficient, the PowderProof horizontal lance or the PowderProof vertical lance are more suitable. For smaller manual samples without puncture, the PharmaScoop pharmaceutical scoop is available. LT Laborhandel orders each of the three Scratcher sizes individually and, where required, also coordinates combinations with other samplers to suit different bulk material properties. If you have any queries regarding the appropriate chamber size, please contact LT Laborhandel for assistance.
