If a drum, an IBC or a big bag is too deep for the short standard scoop, its handle will not reach the sample material in the centre of the container. Anyone who then leans over the rim with their arm or holds the scoop at an angle risks coming into contact with the rim and the inner wall, thereby compromising the sample. The PharmaScoop with a long handle is identical in design to the PharmaScoop range, but it has a 600-millimetre-long handle, thus bridging the gap between a short hand shovel and a long sampling lance.
600-millimetre handle for deep containers
The long handle extends the total length of the scoop to 833 millimetres, with a scoop volume of 1,000 millilitres and an internal diameter of 108 millimetres. By way of comparison: The shortest scoop in the standard range has a total length of just 99 millimetres with a volume of 10 millilitres; even the 1,000-millilitre version of the standard range has a total length of only 357 millimetres with a 124-millimetre handle. The long handle here allows for more than five times the reach, without any change to the scoop’s shape or internal diameter.
Ergonomics for deep containers
The long handle allows sample material to be removed from the centre of a deep container without the hand or forearm touching the rim or the inner wall. This reduces the risk of contamination with hygiene-sensitive samples and eliminates the need to lean over a high drum rim or step onto a footstool just to reach the material. The longer handle makes a noticeable difference to your posture, particularly when taking repeated samples from the same batch throughout the day.
Technology identical to that of the PharmaScoop series
Like the shorter models, the scoop is made from V4A stainless steel (1.4404, AISI 316L), is highly polished inside and out, and is completely free of edges, gaps and undercuts. This design prevents powder residues from becoming trapped in edges or crevices and ending up in a new sample the next time the scoop is used. The material is corrosion-resistant and can withstand frequent cleaning with more aggressive agents without the surface or polish being affected. It is certified for food contact in accordance with EU Regulation 1935/2004; Bürkle provides a collective certificate covering several V4A items for this purpose.
Who will find the long version worthwhile
The long version is particularly useful where bulk goods are regularly delivered in large containers and samples are taken from them, for example during the incoming goods inspection of raw materials in drums or IBCs. If samples are also taken at the same site from smaller, shallower containers, for which a total length of 833 millimetres would be unwieldy, one of the shorter PharmaScoop sizes is a useful addition to the equipment.
When 600 millimetres isn’t enough
For containers that are difficult to reach even with a 600-millimetre handle, such as silos or tall big bags, a sampling lance is the more suitable choice.
