Some pigments and pastes are so sticky that even a 25 per cent groove opening is not wide enough to pick up the material cleanly. For these more adhesive products, there is a pigment scraper of the same design with a 50 per cent groove opening and a significantly wider collection chamber.
Wide groove opening for sticky products
The collection chamber opens across 50 per cent of the pipe’s circumference, with a chamber width of 27 millimetres instead of 19 millimetres as in the 25 per cent version. The wider opening makes it easier to collect material that is more likely to stick to a narrower edge, such as highly adhesive pigment pastes or damp colour powders. When the lance is inserted into the bulk material, the material has more surface area at the wider slot opening to enter the chamber before the lance is withdrawn again.
Lower volume for the same penetration depth
Because the chamber wall is wider whilst the tube diameter remains the same, the pigment sampler with a 50 per cent groove opening takes a smaller sample volume per penetration depth than the 25 per cent version: 85 instead of 145 millilitres at 300 millimetres, 179 instead of 312 millilitres at 600 millimetres and 273 instead of 480 millilitres at 900 millimetres. Anyone who regularly requires larger sample volumes should take this difference into account when choosing the length; in some circumstances, the next longer version may be the more suitable choice.
Design and material
As with the 25 per cent version, the tube and outer diameters are 30 millimetres, manufactured from V4A stainless steel (1.4404, AISI 316L). A material certificate from the manufacturer is available for the stainless steel components in this series, confirming the material specification 1.4404.
Three lengths to suit tank height
The insertion depth ranges from 300 to 600 to 900 millimetres; the total length is accordingly 432, 732 or 1,032 millimetres. The shortest version is usually sufficient for a quick incoming goods inspection at the drum opening, whilst the 900-millimetre lance is required for deeper silos or containers. As with the 25 per cent version, the chamber is open throughout the entire penetration depth; the sample is therefore taken from a cross-section through several layers rather than from a single point.
Typical industries
The pigment sampler with a 50 per cent slot opening is used where pigments, pastes or intermediate products are so sticky that a narrower opening would get stuck on the edge, for example in the paint and varnish industry or with viscous intermediate products in chemical production. An inspector who needs to approve a sticky batch at goods-in can take a representative sample using the wider slot opening without any material remaining on the chamber edge. Particularly for products that have already resulted in incorrect filling even with the 25 per cent version, the wider variant is the more reliable choice.
Selection based on slot opening
If the narrower opening is sufficient – for example, with less sticky powders – the Pigment Sampler with a 25 per cent slot opening is the variant offering the greater sample volume per penetration depth. For cohesive powders without a pronounced tendency to stick, the Scratcher powder sampler is an alternative; for samples taken from the top of silos, the SiloPicker is recommended.

The appropriate length depends on the penetration depth of the respective container.
