Anyone who fills or dispenses small quantities of flammable solvents in the laboratory needs a container that can be opened in a controlled manner without spilling anything whilst pouring. The stainless steel safety jug meets this need with three sizes ranging from 1 to 5 litres. A self-closing precision dispenser releases only the required amount, whilst a pressure relief valve keeps the internal pressure within a safe range during storage.

A precise dispenser instead of tilting and dripping

The precision dispenser fits onto the 1 1/4-inch external thread of the jug and opens only as far as is actually required to dispense the liquid. Once released, it closes automatically, leaving the remaining liquid in the jug. Pressure equalisation begins at around 0.3 bar, so that no excess pressure is suddenly released when the dispenser is opened. This eliminates the need to weigh out small portions from a larger container and reduces the risk of spilling anything whilst decanting.

Explosion protection in the filler neck

A removable flame arrestor is fitted in the filler neck and prevents a source of ignition outside the jug from backfiring through the vapour chamber. Together with the pressure relief valve, this provides the explosion protection required when handling flammable liquids in the workplace. The flame arrestor can be removed from the filler neck for cleaning or visual inspection without having to dismantle the entire jug.

Three sizes for different consumption levels

1 litre is sufficient for small batches prepared directly at the workstation, whilst 2 litres is sufficient for ongoing use at a single workstation. The 5-litre container is suitable for areas with higher throughput, where refilling is required less frequently. All three sizes feature the same precision dispenser and the same flame arrestor; they differ only in terms of outer diameter, height and weight (see table below).

Selecting a suitable size

If you only need to take small quantities from time to time, for example, for an analysis or a series of tests, the 1-litre jug will suffice. If a workstation operates on a shift basis and the jug is emptied several times a day, the 2-litre version is the more practical choice, as it needs to be refilled less often. The 5-litre jug is suitable if several people at a workstation share the same jug or if a particular work step regularly requires larger portions without having to switch to a canister straight away.

Materials and workmanship

The housing is made of V4A (1.4571) stainless steel with a wall thickness of 0.6 millimetres and is electropolished, which makes the surface highly chemically resistant. The handle is made of powder-coated aluminium, whilst the seals are made of PTFE. According to Bürkle, the material is food-safe.

Cleaning and care

The smooth, electropolished surface can be wiped clean using standard laboratory cleaning agents without any residue becoming trapped in the pores. After decanting, a quick wipe-down of the exterior and a rinse cycle through the precision dispenser are usually sufficient before the jug is ready for use again with the next batch. Seals and the flame arrestor are replaceable individual parts, so worn components can be replaced as required without having to replace the entire jug.

Anyone who also stores or transports larger stock quantities, in addition to small filling quantities, can supplement the safety jug with a Safety canister with screw cap for 5 to 20 litres or a Safety container with tap for 10 to 25 litres. For the 10-litre range, with the same precision dispenser principle, there is also the Safety canister with precision dispenser, 10 litres.
