A fixed ultrasonic frequency is often insufficient for analytical fine cleaning. Coarser contaminants require more energy, whilst sensitive samples require gentler treatment. The Elma Elmasonic P 30H switches between 37 and 80 kHz, meeting both requirements with a single unit, whilst offering a 2.75-litre tank capacity for smaller sample volumes. Elma positions the P-series for medical and analytical laboratories, as well as for intensive cleaning in industry, where a single frequency is not sufficient for all cleaning stages.

Two frequencies for different cleaning tasks

At 37 kHz, the unit generates 120 watts of effective ultrasonic power (480 watts peak) for coarse cleaning; at 80 kHz, it delivers 100 watts effective (400 watts peak) for gentler, fine cleaning of sensitive surfaces. Additionally, the unit features a ‘Pulse’ mode for brief bursts of increased power, a ‘Sweep’ mode for even sound distribution, and a ‘Degas’ mode for the rapid degassing of fresh cleaning baths. Power control and a pause function complement the operating modes, allowing the cleaning process to be adapted to different materials without having to change the unit or switch back and forth between two separate ultrasonic baths.

Precise operation with autostart

Two rotary switches set the sonication duration and temperature, whilst a keypad with a digital display shows setpoint and actual values simultaneously. The autostart function only begins the cleaning cycle once the bath has reached the set temperature, ensuring that cleaning results remain consistent across multiple runs. The temperature range extends from 30 to 80 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than in the Select and Easy series, which start at 25 degrees, making it suitable for the more demanding requirements of analytical applications and for cleaning agents that only achieve their full effect at higher temperatures.

Tank and basket for sample preparation

According to the data sheet and operating instructions, the bath has a capacity of 2.75 l, with internal dimensions of 240 x 137 x 100 mm; the recommended working volume is 1.9 l. The matching modular cleaning basket 30 (item no. 1108916) has internal dimensions of 198 x 106 x 50 mm and is designed to hold up to 1.0 kg, making it suitable for smaller sample batches, individual sensors or several components at once. A drain tap (G 3/8 inch) facilitates the change of cleaning medium between batches; this connection is not included on the P 30H SE variant.

Procedure for analytical cleaning

In practice, the sample is first cleaned of coarser residues at 37 kHz, followed by gentler fine cleaning of more sensitive surfaces at 80 kHz. The degassing mode degasses the freshly prepared bath in advance so that cavitation is not weakened by dissolved air. The digital display allows you to check at any time whether the target temperature has been reached before the autostart function begins the actual cycle. This is particularly relevant where cleaning results need to be documented or compared across multiple batches, such as during recurring test series in the same laboratory.

Noise level and operating environment

According to the operating instructions, the sound pressure level is below 70 dB(A), measured with the basket and lid in place, whilst the ultrasonic level is below 105 dB. For a unit with a power consumption of 370 to 350 watts, this is a level that allows it to be used even in laboratory rooms where several workstations are located in the immediate vicinity. Like the vibrating tank and the housing, the tank is made of stainless steel, which can withstand both aqueous cleaning concentrates and the more frequent changes of cleaning media that are common in dual-frequency operation between coarse and fine cleaning.

Choice within the Elma series

Where a fixed frequency of 37 kHz is sufficient, the Select and Easy models are the simpler and more cost-effective alternatives. The P-series is the best choice when both coarse and fine cleaning stages need to be carried out using the same unit, for example in sample preparation for analysis. For larger volumes, the P300H with a 28-litre capacity is available within the P-series.
