Product information "Eppendorf Reference 2 single-channel pipette, variable, 100–1000 µL, blue, 4924000088"
When changing the culture medium for a standard culture, a volume of between 100 and 1000 µL is usually required, depending on the vessel size and cell count; a variable-volume pipette covers this range with a single device. As a mechanical piston-driven pipette, it operates without a battery and without any charging time.
Ergonomics and operation
A spring-loaded tip cone ensures that the tip can be attached with minimal effort, whilst maintaining a consistent seal regardless of the user. If pipetting is regularly carried out with a liquid other than water, this can be compensated for via a secondary adjustment without overwriting the factory calibration. The set volume can be read from the four-digit display with magnifying window from virtually any position, whilst a lock prevents accidental adjustment. As culture vessels of different sizes require different volumes of medium, a single variable-volume pipette can replace several fixed-volume models for the respective vessel sizes. Tip ejection is controlled by the same operating button as tip loading and dispensing; there is no need to touch the used tip with your hand.
Precision in accordance with ISO 8655
Measurement deviations have been tested in accordance with ISO 8655 Part 6, using test volumes of 100 / 500 / 1000 µL. The systematic measurement deviation is as follows: 100 µL: 3.0%/3.0 µL; 500 µL: 1.0%/5.0 µL; 1000 µL: 0.6 per cent/6.0 µL, whilst the random measurement error is 100 µL: 0.6 per cent/0.6 µL; 500 µL: 0.2 per cent/1.0 µL; 1000 µL: 0.2 per cent/2.0 µL. These values can be used directly as the basis for your own quality documentation. The epT.I.P.S. blue 71 mm tip (50–1000 µL) is designed for use with this product.
Autoclavability and material compatibility
The pipette can be autoclaved for 20 minutes at 121 degrees Celsius and 1 bar overpressure without first separating the upper and lower sections. There is no need to re-lubricate the pistons, although a subsequent gravimetric check is still advisable. This means that, if contamination is suspected, the pipette can be sterilised directly whilst assembled, without first dismantling the lower section.
Distinctions within the Eppendorf pipette family
Within the Eppendorf pipette families, the Reference 2 differs from the Research plus in its single-button operation: the Research plus features a two-stage operation, but is the lightest model in the family requiring the least operating force. The electronic Xplorer range goes one step further, using a motor to control aspiration and dispensing speeds, including additional functions such as dilution or sequential pipetting. For those seeking a purely mechanical yet ergonomic solution with secondary adjustment, the Reference 2 sits between these two ranges.
PhysioCare Concept
Reduced weight and low operating force are the two key factors that the PhysioCare Concept focuses on in the Reference 2. Over the course of a long pipetting session, this results in less fatigue.
Maintenance and Calibration
Regular calibration and a visual inspection of the moving parts ensure that the pipette remains within the specified measurement tolerances throughout its entire service life. Wear parts can be replaced individually; there is no need to replace the entire unit. In practice, this pipette is found in research laboratories, in quality assurance and in routine diagnostics – in other words, wherever pipetting results must be traceable and reproducible.
Tip compatibility and colour coding
As the epT.I.P.S. tips are colour-coded to correspond to their respective volume ranges, it is possible to check at a glance on the pipette stand whether the attached tip is compatible with the pipette selected. When attaching the epT.I.P.S. blue 71 mm tip (50–1000 µL), the spring-loaded cone ensures a tight fit without the need for additional force. This means it is immediately clear from the pipette stand which tip box belongs to this pipette.
Typical applications
- Medium changes between 100 and 1000 µL for standard cell cultures
- Pipetting variable volumes in the range of 100 to 1000 microlitres
- Addition of reagents in routine analysis with varying requirements
