Applications

According to the manufacturer, the label warns of violent reactions, ignition and explosion upon contact with flammable substances. It is affixed to packages and overpacks containing oxidising substances. Two examples from the list of dangerous goods: ammonium nitrate, solid, containing no more than 0.2 % flammable substances (UN 1942, label 5.1 only) and hydrogen peroxide, aqueous solution (UN 2014, labels 5.1 and 8). In the second case, hazard label 8 applies.

Containers and vehicles must be labelled with large labels measuring at least 250 x 250 mm. The consignor is responsible for labelling a consignment.

Design of the hazard label

The background is yellow; the flame, circle and number are black. The full designation 5.1 (ADR 5.2.2.2.1.3 a) appears at the bottom; for classes 4.1 to 4.3 and 6.1 and 6.2, however, only the number 4 or 6 appears. For 5.1, the ADR table specifies that the symbol and number must be in black only.

Material and finish

Giese prints on self-adhesive film, seawater-resistant in accordance with BS 5609, with a permanent adhesive. According to the manufacturer, the roll is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use; the film is UV-resistant. The ADR requires hazard labels to be weather-resistant, but does not specify a test method. BS 5609 is a voluntary standard and is used within the industry as proof of suitability for maritime transport. One roll contains 1,000 labels.
