Electromagnetic Rotational Kinematics and Microfluidics
The homogenisation of aqueous or low-viscosity matrices on a laboratory scale requires compact, high-frequency power transmission. The IKA colour squid white operates as a purely electromagnetic stirrer (without a thermodynamic heating unit) and is process-technically limited to a maximum hydrodynamic working volume of 1 L (based on water). The drive unit generates a continuously modulatable, high-frequency alternating magnetic field, which synchronises the rotor (stirring bar) in the reaction vessel at a frequency of 0 to 2,500 revolutions per minute. This asymmetrically wide speed range generates an extremely steep axial flow funnel (vortex) even at minimal volumes. The resulting centrifugal force maximises molecular mass transfer (mixing kinetics) in fractions of a second and physically eliminates dead zones within the reaction vessel.
Amorphous glass matrix and absolute chemical inertness
The materials science architecture of the mounting surface (Ø 115 mm) is fundamentally designed for tribological and chemical resistance. The chassis is coated with a monolithic layer of tempered real glass. This amorphous silicate structure is completely inert towards virtually all highly aggressive chemical reagents, halogens, strong acids or alkalis, which would irreversibly corrode conventional metallic or polymer housings in the event of accidental spillage. The glass also physically prevents the accumulation of microbial biofilms and can be thoroughly decontaminated. As the system is thermodynamically decoupled (no heating matrix), the thermolabile matrix in the reaction vessel is not denatured by heat radiation induced from the surface on which it is placed.
Metrological system cybernetics and electronic commutation
The mechanical drive train is based on an electronically commutated motor (EC motor). The complete absence of mechanical carbon brushes eliminates tribological wear and frictional resistance, thereby qualifying the system for uninterrupted continuous operation (100% duty cycle) at a constant kinetic power (3 W). Metrological control of the stirring process is carried out via a digital LED display. The integrated processor-controlled cybernetics guarantees delay-free transmission of speed adjustments and seamless visual feedback of the actual rotational kinematics to the user.

Important note: Magnetic stirring rods for generating kinetics in the fluid are essential for process operation and are not included in the scope of delivery! Due to the compact geometry of the magnetic field, the use of rotors with a maximum length of 30 mm is a metrological requirement to prevent asymmetric slip (decoupling) at high frequencies.
Custom requirements & accessories
As a pure drive unit, the color squid white does not generate mixing as long as the magnetic field lines are not transferred to a rotor in the vessel. For optimum fluid dynamic turbulence in 1 L Erlenmeyer flasks or beakers, we recommend purchasing cylindrical, PTFE-coated IKAFLON magnetic stirring bars (e.g. in lengths of 20 mm or 30 mm). To safely retrieve the contaminated rotors from the solution, you will also need a long PTFE magnetic rod retriever.
