Product information "IKA HS 260 basic, horizontal shaker, 20 mm stroke, 0003066600"

Kinematics of linear mass acceleration and fluid mechanics

In preparative chemistry and trace analysis, the extraction of dissolved substances between two immiscible liquid phases (liquid–liquid extraction) requires the input of a substantial amount of specific kinetic energy. In contrast to orbital rotations, the IKA HS 260 basic operates on the principle of linear (horizontal) kinematics. The base generates a precisely reciprocal, horizontal oscillation with a shaking stroke of 20 mm. At speeds of up to 300 oscillations per minute, this one-dimensional acceleration induces substantial lateral shear forces on the vessel walls (particularly in separating funnels). This fluid-dynamic kinetics breaks down phase boundaries, generates microscopic emulsion droplets and maximises the thermodynamic interfacial area for a quantitative and extremely accelerated mass transfer.

System statics and tribological resilience

Applying 300 horizontal direction changes per minute under a maximum load of 7.5 kg generates enormous centrifugal and torsional forces, which would immediately lead to a resonance catastrophe (the device wandering) in an inferior mechanical design. The structural design of the HS 260 basic is engineered for maximum mechanical resilience. The heavy, low-centre-of-gravity chassis architecture completely absorbs the transverse vibration vectors. The tribologically optimised bearings of the drive shafts are encapsulated to prevent wear, enabling them to continuously withstand the asymmetrical loads caused by unevenly filled vessels (imbalance) across the entire speed range, without compromising the metrological amplitude of the 20 mm stroke.

Metrological control and system interface

The reproducibility of extraction rates or staining processes (e.g. in histology) requires strictly defined time parameters. The electronic interface of the HS 260 basic features an LED bar graph for metrological visualisation of speed and time. The integrated timer algorithm controls the process cybernetically from 5 to 50 minutes and interrupts the kinetic energy supply precisely upon expiry to prevent thermal ‘over-shaking’ or the re-separation of phases. For thermodynamically non-critical homogenisation processes, the system can be manually switched to continuous operation.

Individual requirements & accessories

The HS 260 basic converts electrical energy into linear kinetic energy, but the matrix must be physically secured. For process-related liquid-liquid extraction in separating funnels, the AS 260.2 attachment (fixing clips) or the AS 260.3 roller attachment is essential, as the lateral centrifugal forces would otherwise cause the glass vessels to be ejected with ballistic force. For standard homogenisation in asymmetrical Petri dishes or Erlenmeyer flasks, we recommend the universal attachment AS 260.1.
