The IKA lab dancer is a compact, orbital test-tube shaker (vortex mixer) designed specifically for the rapid mixing of small sample volumes. The device does away with complex controls and instead relies on an intuitive ‘touch function’: the mixing process is initiated automatically as soon as the test tube exerts pressure on the attachment. This design makes the lab dancer ideal for routine laboratory applications where efficiency and one-handed operation are paramount.

Performance and motion

With a fixed speed of 2,800 rpm (revolutions per minute) and a shaking stroke of 4.5 mm, the lab dancer generates an intense orbital motion. These parameters guarantee excellent mixing performance in a matter of seconds, even with higher-viscosity media. The system is designed for all standard small vessels up to a diameter of 30 mm, including test tubes, centrifuge tubes (e.g. Falcon) and Eppendorf reaction vials.

Material and Stability

Despite its small footprint, the lab dancer ensures high stability. The lower part of the housing is made of heavy, coated die-cast zinc, which absorbs vibrations and prevents the device from ‘wandering’ across the laboratory bench. The upper part of the housing and the test tube holder are made from chemically inert polypropylene (PP) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to provide resistance to aggressive substances.
