Kinetics of impact comminution on a scaled-up scale and its relevance to materials science
In the analytical sample preparation of hard, brittle matrices (such as rocks, soil samples or mineral solids), the application of substantial mechanical energy is essential. The IKA MTT 100 single-use grinding jars operate on the process engineering principle of high-speed impact and shock comminution and extend the isolated working chamber to a large volume of 100 ml. Driven by the magnetic coupling of the IKA Tube Mill base station at up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, the integrated rotor transfers immense kinetic energy to the solids. The enlarged chamber geometry creates enhanced three-dimensional flow turbulence (vortex), which continuously forces representative cross-sections of the sample into the impact zone. However, the key process-engineering modification of this beaker lies in the material properties of the impact tool: it is made of solid titanium rather than conventional stainless steel.
Metallurgical interference and abrasion prevention
A fundamental mechanical problem when comminuting hard, abrasive samples is tribological tool wear, which is further exacerbated on a macroscale (100 ml) by the increased particle collision rate. Collisions between the matrix and a conventional stainless steel beater inevitably lead to metallic abrasion. This introduction of foreign ions (specifically iron, chromium and nickel) causes significant spectroscopic interference and metrological errors in sensitive trace analysis (such as AAS, ICP-OES or ICP-MS). The use of the MTT 100 titanium beater completely eliminates this specific metallurgical contamination. Titanium exhibits excellent mechanical toughness and ensures that, during large-volume geochemical or environmental analytical investigations, the sample’s original heavy metal content (blank value) is not distorted by the grinding tool.
Aerosol containment and elimination of carry-over on a macro scale
The high-speed grinding of extremely hard samples induces significant thermodynamic stress (exothermic reaction). The chamber wall, made of high-performance thermoplastic, absorbs these kinetic impacts and thermal loads from the 100-ml batch without fracturing. When grinding toxic or biohazardous samples, the sealed beaker also functions as a hermetically sealed containment system, thereby physically protecting the user from respirable aerosols. Finally, the fundamental design principle of a ‘single-use’ vessel guarantees that analytical cross-contamination (carry-over) between consecutive batches is completely eliminated, as the thermodynamically complex decontamination of conventional grinding chambers is entirely eliminated.

Custom requirements & accessories
The MTT 100.10 grinding jars are highly specialised consumables for the analytical solid-state spectroscopy of representative cross-section samples. The metrological selection of the correct beaker is essential: for large-volume standard grinding operations where the iron content of the sample is irrelevant, opt for the standard MT 100 beaker (stainless steel rotor) for economic reasons. However, as soon as the absolute integrity of element-specific trace analysis on a scaled-up scale is required, switching to the MTT version with a titanium rotor described here is physically imperative in order to avoid systematic measurement errors.
