Product information "IKA MultiDrive CS 1 cooling system for MI grinding chambers, 0020113275"
Thermodynamic heat dissipation in high-speed grinding processes
In the demanding sample preparation of hard, brittle or fibrous materials, controlling the process-induced frictional heat is the most important physical parameter. The conversion of kinetic rotational energy into mechanical comminution work inevitably generates massive amounts of thermal energy inside grinding chambers. For thermolabile analytes such as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or temperature-sensitive proteins, this uncontrolled rise in temperature leads to irreversible denaturation and thus to distorted analytical results. To physically eliminate this source of methodological error, IKA has developed the highly specialised MultiDrive CS 1 cooling system. This system enables active, liquid-based temperature control of the double-walled IKA MI grinding chambers and transforms your mill into a thermally stable grinding instrument for highly sensitive sample matrices.
Highly efficient cooling circuits for continuous heat exchange
The core technological principle of the CS 1 system is based on continuous convective heat exchange. The accessory set is fitted directly to the external cooling jacket of the compatible MI 250 or MI 400 grinding chambers. Through the continuous circulation of cold tap water or temperature-controlled coolant from a recirculating chiller, the impact and frictional heat generated is absorbed directly via the chamber’s heat-conducting stainless steel walls and dissipated from the system. This physical intervention effectively prevents heat build-up (thermal stress) within the grinding chamber. The key analytical advantage is that the material being ground does not sinter or stick to the chamber walls, and the moisture content of the sample remains absolutely constant throughout the entire batch process, which is of essential importance for subsequent gravimetric or chromatographic analyses.
System integration and prevention of cross-contamination
The precisely fitted connections and high-quality tubing of the CS 1 are designed for the rigours of everyday laboratory use and operation under hydrostatic pressure. In contrast to internal cryogenic grinding with dry ice (solid CO₂), where the cooling medium comes into direct physical contact with the sample, the CS 1 system operates as a purely external, closed cooling network. This physically eliminates, one hundred per cent, any chemical interactions between the cooling medium and the analyte, as well as the risk of microbiological or particulate contamination of the sample by the coolant.
Increased process reliability and extended service life
Active cooling protects not only the valuable sample but also the core mechanical components of the milling setup. The drastic reduction in thermal stress protects the sensitive shaft seals of the milling chambers and minimises thermomechanical wear on the stainless steel impact tools. This leads to a significant extension of the service life of your expensive accessories and measurably reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the entire IKA MultiDrive system. For laboratories with high sample throughput or for extremely long grinding intervals, during which the chamber would continuously heat up, the MultiDrive CS 1 cooling system is an essential process-related investment.

Individual requirements & accessories
To maximise the thermodynamic efficiency of this system and minimise your laboratory’s water consumption for both environmental and economic reasons, we recommend connecting it to a closed, active recirculating chiller (such as the IKA RC 2 basic). This guarantees an absolutely constant inlet temperature, regardless of fluctuations in the in-house water supply.
