Product information "IKA MultiDrive basic Universal Mill, drive unit, 1,000 W, 0025002638"
A single fixed-speed batch mill rarely covers all the grinding tasks required in a laboratory. The IKA MultiDrive basic therefore separates the drive unit from the vessel: a 1,000-watt drive unit with a variable speed range of 3,000 to 20,000 rpm, to which different grinding chambers or mixing vessels can be connected depending on the task.
Variable speed from 3,000 to 20,000 rpm
The brushless DC motor draws 1,000 W and delivers 800 W, with a speed deviation of ±5 %. An intermittent operation mode, which can be activated at the touch of a button, allows hard samples to be pre-ground or mixed particularly thoroughly. The operating principle encompasses cutting, impact crushing, mixing and dispersing; an automatic vessel detection system adjusts the drive to suit the connected vessel.
Vessels can be selected separately
The drive unit itself does not include a grinding chamber or mixing vessel. The sealed MI 250-S and MI 400-S grinding chambers are available for dry grinding, whilst the BL 2000 mixing vessel is available for wet grinding and mixing. The MI grinding chambers can be cooled indirectly using the CS 1 cooling system, whilst keeping the material being ground and the coolant separate. The combination of vessel and beater best suited to a particular sample depends on the hardness of the material and the desired final particle size.
Connection and environmental conditions
Operation is indicated via a 7-segment LED display, whilst a micro-USB interface is used to connect to PC software. The permissible ambient temperature range is 5 to 40 °C, and the permissible relative humidity is 80 %. Measuring 300 x 350 x 250 mm and weighing 8.5 kg, the MultiDrive basic is slightly larger and heavier than the M 20, but offers significantly greater flexibility in terms of speed. The unit’s power consumption is 1,000 W at 220 to 240 V, and it has an IP 31 protection rating in accordance with DIN EN 60529.
Beaters, blades and qualification
The MI 250-S and MI 400-S grinding chambers each come with their own beaters and blades made of stainless steel or tungsten carbide (MI 250.1/.2/.3 and MI 400.1/.2/.3), whilst the BL 2000 mixing vessel comes with the standard BL 2000.1 mixing blade. Tungsten carbide is recommended for particularly abrasive or hard samples, where a stainless steel beater would wear out more quickly. For regulated environments, IKA provides factory calibration certificates and IQ/OQ documents for the MultiDrive basic.
One drive for multiple batch sizes
As the MI 250-S, MI 400-S and BL 2000 are connected to the same drive, a single MultiDrive basic can be used to process both a small 250-ml batch and a larger 400-ml or 2000-ml batch without the need to purchase a second unit. Automatic vessel recognition ensures that the drive detects which vessel is connected and adjusts the parameters accordingly. For vessels with their own temperature sensor (MI 250-T-S, MI 400-T-S, DI 2000-T), the drive also displays the medium temperature, which is helpful for temperature-sensitive samples.
Certificates for regulated establishments
In addition to the IQ/OQ documents, IKA also provides general certificates 2.2 and 3.1 for the MultiDrive basic, as well as guidance on carrying out the qualification process. For organisations with documented equipment qualifications, for example, in pharmaceutical development, these documents can be incorporated directly into their own quality management documentation, together with the factory calibration certificate.
Typical applications
- Grinding of hard, soft or fibrous samples using a single drive
- Tasks that involve both grinding and mixing or dispersing
- Preliminary comminution in intermittent operation for particularly tough samples
- Laboratories that wish to accommodate different batch sizes by using different vessels

Maximum efficiency in wet grinding: the IKA MultiDrive BL 2000 mixing vessel In modern food analysis, agricultural quality control and biological research, representative sample preparation is by far the most critical step for any subsequent analysis. If heterogeneous, water-containing or extremely fibrous source materials are not completely and homogeneously comminuted, the resulting analytical measurements are simply worthless. Particular challenges are posed by samples that are unsuitable for conventional dry grinding because they are too moist, too oily or too temperature-sensitive. It is precisely for this demanding, process-engineering segment that IKA has developed the highly specialised MultiDrive BL 2000 mixing vessel (MPN 0025003961). This robust accessory, designed as a blender, transforms your IKA MultiDrive universal mill into a powerful, high-performance mixer that turns even the toughest and most resistant wet samples into a perfectly homogeneous, analysis-ready suspension in a matter of seconds. The specialist tool for challenging sample matrices The strength of the BL 2000 lies in its precise adaptation to so-called wet grinding. Instead of having to go to the trouble of freeze-drying samples, you can process them directly in their original state. According to the manufacturer, the vessel is particularly well-suited to a wide variety of challenging applications: it minces sinewy meat and fatty sausages for food safety testing, homogenises hard soya beans for protein determination, processes tough, moist silage for agricultural feed analysis, and purées fresh vegetables for vitamin or residue analysis. The vessel is supplied with a solid standard blend knife made from high-quality, corrosion-resistant stainless steel. At extremely high speeds, this razor-sharp tool effortlessly penetrates cell walls, cuts through muscle fibres and generates strong hydrodynamic turbulence, guaranteeing absolutely uniform mixing of the sample material. Enormous capacity for representative composite samples A common problem in analytical work is the sample size. If only a tiny piece is taken from a large consignment (for example, a silage bale), this sample is rarely representative of the entire consignment. The IKA MultiDrive BL 2000 solves this problem with its enormous maximum usable volume of 2,000 millilitres (2 litres). This enormous volume allows you to process large, meaningful cross-sectional samples in a single, rapid batch process. Another major advantage that makes your work easier is that the maximum feed grain size is an impressive 30 millimetres. This means you do not need to spend time pre-cutting your samples into tiny pieces with a scalpel beforehand; coarsely crushed chunks can be placed directly into the mixing vessel, which drastically reduces set-up and preparation times in your laboratory. Hygiene and cleaning Wherever meat, biological tissue or fatty samples are handled, the risk of dangerous cross-contamination (carry-over) is ever-present. Even minute traces of protein from the previous sample remaining in the vessel can completely ruin PCR analyses, DNA extractions or chromatographic investigations. IKA has therefore designed the BL 2000 vessel for easy cleaning. The entire vessel, along with all its components that come into contact with the sample, can be cleaned conveniently and safely in the laboratory dishwasher. The key design feature for deep cleaning is that the stainless steel mixing blade can be completely dismantled in just a few simple steps. This helps to prevent stubborn biofilms or sample residues from becoming trapped beneath the blades or on the seals (which are made from PTFE and silicone). This is particularly important in laboratories operating in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) or ISO 9001. System integration and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) As an essential expansion module, the mixing vessel is precisely tailored to the IKA MultiDrive ecosystem. It is fully compatible with both the IKA MultiDrive basic and the state-of-the-art MultiDrive control drive unit. The BL 2000’s housing is made from durable, crystal-clear PCTG plastic, which allows for constant visual monitoring of the grinding process whilst being extremely impact-resistant. With compact dimensions of 180 x 280 x 220 mm and a weight of just 1.25 kg, the vessel is ergonomic to handle and easy to store. By investing in the BL 2000 mixing vessel, you will significantly expand the analytical capabilities of your existing MultiDrive mill. You will eliminate the need to purchase an additional, expensive and space-consuming bench-top mixer, optimise your in-house laboratory processes, reduce your total cost of ownership and ensure consistently excellent sample quality for all wet chemical analyses. Precise dry grinding with pressure equalisation: the IKA MultiDrive MI 250 S grinding chamber In modern laboratory analysis, the stringent quality control of food and animal feed, and materials research, the precise and loss-free preparation of samples from dry, hard or brittle materials is a core process engineering task. When raw materials such as fibrous wood, compact animal feed, frozen agricultural products or tough plastic pellets need to be ground, conventional open mills often reach their physical limits. When grinding extremely fine dusts or deep-frozen samples, excess pressure inevitably builds up inside the grinding vessel during the high-speed process. Without a professional seal, the finest sample material would escape uncontrollably into the laboratory environment, which not only leads to distorted analysis results due to sample loss but also poses a significant health risk (dust exposure) to laboratory staff. To solve this highly critical problem in dry milling elegantly, cleanly and safely, IKA has developed the highly specialised MultiDrive MI 250 S grinding chamber (MPN 0020112097). This robust, specially sealed grinding vessel significantly expands the analytical capabilities of your IKA MultiDrive universal mill and guarantees a dust-free, safe and reproducible batch process, even with extremely fine powders. The innovative sealing and pressure equalisation system The outstanding, eponymous technological feature of the MI 250 S (the ‘S’ stands for Sealed) is its completely redesigned sealing and pressure-equalisation system. Unlike simple, inflexible grinding cups, this 250-millilitre vessel is fitted with a highly innovative special seal. For example, when grinding brittle, frozen samples and the trapped gas expands significantly due to the inevitable grinding friction, this sealing system allows for controlled pressure relief directly via the lid. A special foam integrated into the system acts as a highly effective mechanical barrier. It retains the actual, fine powdered sample material absolutely securely and without loss inside the grinding chamber, whilst allowing the excess air pressure to escape safely and without risk. This system is invaluable for laboratories that handle extremely fine, volatile or toxic powders and must ensure absolute containment of their valuable sample material for subsequent analysis. Brute grinding power and versatile cooling options Despite its sophisticated, precision sealing technology, the IKA MultiDrive MI 250 S is an uncompromising, robust powerhouse designed for heavy-duty grinding. A powerful beater made from extremely hard and wear-resistant grade 1.4034 stainless steel is included as standard. This high-speed rotating beater effortlessly pulverises samples with a feed particle size of up to 7 millimetres and a demanding maximum material hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale. To effectively control the inevitable frictional heat generated during heavy-duty grinding processes, which could destroy sensitive analytes, the chamber offers two excellent cooling options: On the one hand, the grinding chamber can be actively cooled from the outside using water. On the other hand, the vessel is suitable for cooling the material directly inside the chamber by adding dry ice (solid CO₂) (cryogenic grinding). This is an essential technological requirement for processing temperature-sensitive plastics or frozen tissue, which would immediately melt, clump together or undergo chemical denaturation in the shear gap at normal room temperature. Material quality and cleaning In regulated sectors such as food analysis or stringent pharmaceutical quality control, the requirements regarding material quality and the absolute prevention of cross-contamination (carry-over) are extremely high. The surfaces of the MI 250 S grinding chamber that come into contact with the medium are therefore made of high-quality, easy-to-clean grade 1.4301 stainless steel, sensibly complemented by robust silicone sealing elements. According to the manufacturer, the material concept is designed to be FDA-compliant (Food and Drug Administration). Furthermore, the robust chamber is specifically approved for the processing of highly abrasive substances. According to IKA, the grinding chamber is cleaned manually. However, to make this process as safe, ergonomic and thorough as possible, the stainless steel beater can be completely dismantled in just a few simple steps. This allows you to ensure at all times that no hidden powder residues or hazardous biofilms accumulate beneath the beater, thereby supporting your laboratory routine. System integration and optimisation of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) As an original accessory, the MI 250 S grinding chamber is perfectly matched to the IKA MultiDrive basic drive unit (and MultiDrive control). With extremely compact dimensions of 160 x 180 x 160 mm and a weight of just 1.5 kg, the 250-ml vessel is highly ergonomic to handle and can be stored in a space-saving manner in a laboratory cabinet. By purchasing this highly specialised, sealed grinding vessel, you will greatly expand the range of applications for your existing mill. You will completely eliminate the need for costly investments in additional, expensive specialised mills for extremely fine powders or those requiring strict temperature control. If you require the absolute highest level of dust protection, material retention and temperature control for your demanding dry grinding of wood, plastics or animal feed, the IKA MultiDrive MI 250 S is the economically (TCO) and analytically perfect solution for your day-to-day laboratory work. Technical data Useful volume: 250 ml Process type: Batch operation Special feature (S=Sealed): Special vessel seal with pressure equalisation via the lid and a foam barrier Max. feed particle size: 7 mm Max. material hardness: 5 Mohs Compatible drives: IKA MultiDrive basic (and MultiDrive control) Main application: Dry grinding (e.g. wood, animal feed, frozen products, plastics) Cooling options: Grinding chamber water-coolable; material to be ground can be cooled internally with dry ice Material (chamber): Stainless steel 1.4301 Material (beater): Stainless steel 1.4034 FDA compliance: according to the manufacturer Dimensions (W x H x D): 160 x 180 x 160 mm Weight: 1.5 kg Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive MI 250 S grinding chamber (sealed, 250 ml) 1 x standard stainless steel beater (already fitted, removable) (Important note: The essential MultiDrive drive motor is not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories To operate this sealed grinding vessel, you must have the IKA MultiDrive basic or MultiDrive control drive unit. Depending on the nature of your samples, IKA offers additional, optional tools for this vessel: For extremely hard or fibrous materials, the vessel can be fitted with a special stainless steel star knife or a hard metal beater. Our experienced procurement service will be happy to advise you on selecting the ideal grinding tools and configuring your IKA MultiDrive system.
Maximum safety and capacity for dry grinding: the IKA MultiDrive MI 400 S grinding chamber In industrial materials research, agricultural analysis and the strictly regulated quality control of food and animal feed, the reproducible and absolutely loss-free preparation of samples from dry, hard or brittle materials is a fundamental core task. When tough raw materials such as fibrous wood, compact animal feed, frozen agricultural products or plastics need to be ground, conventional, open grinding vessels often reach their physical and health and safety limits. During the intensive comminution of extremely fine dusts or the processing of deep-frozen samples, the grinding energy and gas expansion inevitably cause a significant build-up of overpressure inside the grinding vessel. Without a professionally engineered seal, the finest sample material would escape uncontrollably into the laboratory environment as an aerosol. This not only leads to massively distorted analytical results due to measurable sample loss, but also poses a significant health hazard (dust exposure) to laboratory staff. To solve this highly critical problem in large-volume dry grinding elegantly and safely, IKA has developed the highly specialised MultiDrive MI 400 S grinding chamber (MPN 0020112099). This robust, specially sealed grinding vessel significantly expands the analytical capabilities of your IKA MultiDrive universal mill and guarantees an absolutely dust-free, safe and highly reproducible batch process on a generous 400 ml scale. The 400-ml volume: the key to representative composite samples The greatest and most decisive advantage of the MI 400 S over smaller models is its exceptionally generous working volume of up to 400 millilitres. In the analysis of heterogeneous natural materials, such as mixed animal feed, bark mulch or shredded plastic waste, an insufficient sample size is often the biggest obstacle to reliable results. A tiny sample simply does not reflect the overall composition of the batch. The IKA MI 400 S enables you to process large, statistically fully representative cross-sectional samples in a single, rapid grinding cycle. With a maximum permissible feed particle size of 7 millimetres, you also drastically minimise set-up and preparation times in your laboratory, as many samples no longer need to be pre-shredded, a time-consuming and error-prone process. Innovative containment: the sealed pressure equalisation system The “S” in the product name unambiguously stands for “Sealed”. The grinding chamber is equipped with a highly innovative, intelligent sealing and pressure-equalisation system. For example, when grinding brittle samples mixed with dry ice, and the trapped gas expands significantly due to the resulting kinetic grinding friction, this system enables controlled pressure relief directly via the chamber lid. A special foam material, integrated into the sealing system, acts as a highly effective mechanical barrier. It retains the fine, often toxic or highly valuable powdered sample material absolutely securely inside the grinding chamber (containment), whilst the excess, hazardous air pressure can be safely and harmlessly released into the environment. Brute grinding power and extreme cooling options The IKA MultiDrive MI 400 S is an uncompromising powerhouse for heavy-duty impact and cutting comminution (impact operating principle). A powerful beater (standard beater) made from extremely hard and wear-resistant grade 1.4034 stainless steel is included as standard. This high-speed rotating beater, with a massive diameter of 81 mm, effortlessly crushes samples with a demanding maximum material hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale at speeds of up to 20,000 rpm. The circumferential speed reaches a staggering 85 m/s. To effectively control the inevitable frictional heat generated during such intensive comminution processes, which would inevitably destroy heat-sensitive analytes, the chamber offers two excellent professional cooling options: the grinding chamber can be actively cooled from the outside via a cooling jacket with circulating water. Even more important for research: the vessel is suitable for deep-freezing the material directly inside the chamber by adding dry ice (solid CO₂) (cryogenic grinding). This is the essential technological prerequisite for the successful processing of tough plastics or frozen natural substances, which would melt immediately at normal room temperature and block the grinding mechanism. Material quality, cleaning and system integration In highly regulated sectors such as food analysis or pharmaceutical quality control, the absolute prevention of cross-contamination (carry-over) is of paramount importance. The surfaces of the MI 400 S grinding chamber that come into contact with the medium are made of high-quality, easy-to-clean grade 1.4301 stainless steel, effectively complemented by robust sealing elements made of chemically resistant silicone. According to the manufacturer, the material concept is designed to be FDA-compliant (Food and Drug Administration). Furthermore, the robust chamber is specifically approved for processing highly abrasive substances. To ensure thorough intensive cleaning, the heavy stainless steel beater can be completely dismantled in just a few simple steps. Weighing just 1.5 kg, this accessory is perfectly matched to the IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control drive units. If you require the very highest level of dust protection, representative sample quantities and temperature control for your demanding, high-volume dry grinding of wood, plastics or animal feed, the IKA MultiDrive MI 400 S is the perfect solution for your laboratory, both economically and analytically. Technical data Maximum working volume: 400 ml Process type & operating principle: Batch operation / Impact Special feature (S=Sealed): Specially sealed design with integrated pressure equalisation Max. feed particle size: 7 mm Max. feed material hardness: 5 Mohs Speed range: 3,000 to 20,000 rpm (max. peripheral speed 85 m/s) Compatible drives: IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control Main application: Dry grinding (e.g. wood, animal feed, frozen products, plastics) Cooling options: Chamber can be cooled externally with water; material can be cooled internally with dry ice Material (chamber): High-grade stainless steel 1.4301 Material (beater): Wear-resistant stainless steel 1.4034 (Ø 81 mm) FDA compliance: according to the manufacturer Dimensions (W x H x D): 160 x 180 x 160 mm Weight: 1.5 kg Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive MI 400 S grinding chamber (sealed, 400 ml) 1 x standard beater made of 1.4034 stainless steel (already fitted) (Important note: The essential MultiDrive drive motor is not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories To put this sealed 400 ml grinding vessel into operation, you will need the heart of the system: the IKA MultiDrive basic or MultiDrive control drive unit. Depending on the specific material properties of your samples, IKA also offers high-performance alternative grinding tools for this vessel, such as the special MultiDrive MI 400.2 star knife for extremely fibrous material. Our experienced procurement service will be happy to advise you in detail on selecting the ideal grinding tools and the bespoke configuration of your IKA MultiDrive milling system.
Thermodynamic heat dissipation in high-speed grinding processes In the demanding sample preparation of hard, brittle or fibrous materials, controlling the process-induced frictional heat is the most important physical parameter. The conversion of kinetic rotational energy into mechanical comminution work inevitably generates massive amounts of thermal energy inside grinding chambers. For thermolabile analytes such as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or temperature-sensitive proteins, this uncontrolled rise in temperature leads to irreversible denaturation and thus to distorted analytical results. To physically eliminate this source of methodological error, IKA has developed the highly specialised MultiDrive CS 1 cooling system. This system enables active, liquid-based temperature control of the double-walled IKA MI grinding chambers and transforms your mill into a thermally stable grinding instrument for highly sensitive sample matrices. Highly efficient cooling circuits for continuous heat exchange The core technological principle of the CS 1 system is based on continuous convective heat exchange. The accessory set is fitted directly to the external cooling jacket of the compatible MI 250 or MI 400 grinding chambers. Through the continuous circulation of cold tap water or temperature-controlled coolant from a recirculating chiller, the impact and frictional heat generated is absorbed directly via the chamber’s heat-conducting stainless steel walls and dissipated from the system. This physical intervention effectively prevents heat build-up (thermal stress) within the grinding chamber. The key analytical advantage is that the material being ground does not sinter or stick to the chamber walls, and the moisture content of the sample remains absolutely constant throughout the entire batch process, which is of essential importance for subsequent gravimetric or chromatographic analyses. System integration and prevention of cross-contamination The precisely fitted connections and high-quality tubing of the CS 1 are designed for the rigours of everyday laboratory use and operation under hydrostatic pressure. In contrast to internal cryogenic grinding with dry ice (solid CO₂), where the cooling medium comes into direct physical contact with the sample, the CS 1 system operates as a purely external, closed cooling network. This prevents contact between the cooling medium and the sample, and thus chemical interactions with the analyte as well as microbiological or particulate contamination of the sample by the coolant. Increased process reliability and extended service life Active cooling protects not only the valuable sample but also the core mechanical components of the milling setup. The drastic reduction in thermal stress protects the sensitive shaft seals of the milling chambers and minimises thermomechanical wear on the stainless steel impact tools. This leads to a significant extension of the service life of your expensive accessories and measurably reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the entire IKA MultiDrive system. For laboratories with high sample throughput or for extremely long grinding intervals, during which the chamber would continuously heat up, the MultiDrive CS 1 cooling system is an essential process-related investment. Technical details Product type: Active cooling system / hose set for grinding chambers Operating principle: Convective heat exchange via a double-walled cooling jacket Cooling medium: Tap water or temperature-controlled liquid from an external recirculating cooler (chiller) Process engineering advantage: Prevents thermal denaturation and the release of VOCs Analytical advantage: Purely external cooling (no direct sample contact, no cross-contamination) Compatibility (grinding chambers): IKA MultiDrive MI 250 and MI 400 series (including T / S variants) Compatibility (drive): Compatible with IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control Materials: Pressure-resistant, highly flexible laboratory tubing with precisely fitting connection adaptors Maintenance: Maintenance-free flow-through system Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive CS 1 cooling system (complete connection and hose set) (Important note: The essential MI grinding chambers and the IKA MultiDrive drive unit are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories To maximise the thermodynamic efficiency of this system and minimise your laboratory’s water consumption for both environmental and economic reasons, we recommend connecting it to a closed, active recirculating chiller (such as the IKA RC 2 basic). This ensures a constant inlet temperature, regardless of fluctuations in the in-house water supply. Please feel free to contact our procurement service, which specialises in process engineering, at any time for a bespoke design of your thermally monitored milling setup.
Kinetics of wet comminution and cell suspension In biological sample preparation, the extraction of sensitive phytochemicals and food analysis, the physical disruption of soft, water-containing or extremely fibrous tissue structures is the fundamental first step in the process. The IKA MultiDrive BL 2000.1 Standard Mixing Blade is the core fluid-mechanical tool for precisely these wet grinding and mixing processes. Driven by the MultiDrive base station at speeds of up to 30,000 revolutions per minute, the sharp, geometrically optimised blade shears through cellular matrices using massive mechanical shear forces. This continuous cutting process transforms coarse, heterogeneous samples into homogeneous, flowable suspensions, which are essential for subsequent chromatographic or spectroscopic analysis. Macroscopic fluid dynamics in the blender vessel Breaking down tough plant fibres or muscle tissue requires more than just a high rotational speed; it requires controlled rheology within the sample vessel. The fluid-dynamic architecture of the crossed blades of the BL 2000.1 blade is designed to maintain strong axial and radial circulation (vortex) within the large-volume BL 2000 blender vessel. The medium is continuously drawn from the periphery into the area of extreme turbulence (shear zone) created by the rotating blades. This flow profile prevents light sample fractions from floating to the surface, breaks down phase separations and ensures homogeneous particle distribution throughout the entire 2,000-ml batch volume without any process-related dead zones. Material integrity and hygiene When extracting active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) or conducting toxicological tests, avoiding cross-contamination (carry-over prevention) is essential. The entire mixing blade is made from solid, highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel. It easily withstands the oxidative effects of aqueous solutions, acidic plant extracts and aggressive cleaning agents. The robust, single-material design avoids complex, hard-to-reach undercuts and enables thermal sterilisation in an autoclave. Technical details Product type: Standard mixing blade (replacement / interchangeable tool) Process function: Cutting, wet grinding and homogenisation Fluid dynamics: Generation of strong axial and radial turbulence Blade architecture: Crossed, sharpened rotor blades Compatibility (vessel): Exclusively suitable for the IKA MultiDrive BL 2000 (blender vessel) Compatibility (drive): IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control Material: Solid, corrosion-resistant stainless steel Cleaning and hygiene: Fully autoclavable and chemically sterilisable Assembly: Quick, positive-lock tool change within the vessel Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive BL 2000.1 standard mixing blade (stainless steel) (Important note: The MultiDrive drive unit and the BL 2000 vessel are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The BL 2000.1 blade is the standard wear part for wet comminution. During the continuous processing of extremely hard, abrasive sample matrices (such as bone tissue or frozen agricultural products), the sharpness of the stainless steel blade is subject to natural mechanical wear. For laboratories with high sample throughput, it is metrologically advisable to always keep replacement blades in stock to safeguard the long-term reproducibility of the particle size distribution. Please contact our procurement service at any time to source consumables tailored to your requirements.
Kinetics of high-speed impact comminution In demanding inorganic analysis, geochemistry and pharmaceutical quality control, the physical comminution of hard and brittle sample matrices (such as minerals, ceramics, tablets or cereals) is the fundamental first step in the process. The IKA MultiDrive MI 250.1 standard grinding tool operates according to the process principle of impact and shock comminution. Driven by the MultiDrive base station at up to 30,000 revolutions per minute, the rotating stainless steel beater generates immense peripheral speeds at its outer edges. The massive kinetic energy generated in this process is transferred directly to the sample material in fractions of a millisecond. This extreme mechanical impulse overcomes the material’s internal tensile and compressive strength, leading to the immediate, abrupt shattering of the crystal lattices and macroscopic structures. Particle kinematics in the enclosed grinding chamber The fragmentation of dry samples requires controlled kinematics within the grinding chamber. The specific geometry of the MI 250.1 beater is physically precisely matched to the radius of the 250-ml grinding chamber. Due to the high-speed rotation, the particles are not only struck by the beater itself, but are also hurled with enormous acceleration against the stainless steel wall of the chamber, where they are further comminuted by additional impact energy. This continuous kinetic cycle of impact and rebound results in a highly homogeneous, reproducible particle size distribution in the analytically relevant micrometre range, without the formation of fluid dynamic dead zones. Material integrity and abrasion resistance When processing materials with a high Mohs hardness, the grinding tool is subjected to massive tribological stresses (wear caused by friction and impact). To physically minimise sample contamination by metallic abrasion (carry-over), the MI 250.1 beater is manufactured from a highly wear-resistant, solid stainless steel. This single-material design provides high structural integrity, even during repeated grinding cycles. The smooth, seamless metal surface can be thoroughly decontaminated and thermally sterilised in an autoclave. Technical details Product type: Standard beater (replacement / interchangeable tool) Processing principle: Impact milling Physical scope of application: Dry grinding of hard and brittle matrices Compatibility (vessel): Suitable exclusively for the IKA MultiDrive MI 250 (including the T version) Compatibility (drive): IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control Material: Solid, highly wear-resistant stainless steel Installation: Tool-free, form-fit replacement in the grinding vessel Cleaning and hygiene: Fully autoclavable and chemically sterilisable Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive MI 250.1 standard beater (stainless steel) (Important note: The MultiDrive drive unit and the MI 250 grinding chamber are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The MI 250.1 beater is the primary wear part in impact grinding. Despite the extreme hardness of the stainless steel, the continuous grinding of highly abrasive samples (such as quartz sand or ores) inevitably leads to gradual blunting and deformation of the striking edges. To maintain the thermodynamic efficiency and kinetics of the grinding process at the standardised laboratory level in the long term, regular replacement of the tool is essential. Kinetics of cutting and shear comminution In materials science and biological sample preparation, tough, elastic and extremely fibrous matrices (such as plastics, textiles, paper, root tissue or cellulose) present a major physical challenge. Conventional impact devices fail in this context, as elastic materials absorb the kinetic impact energy rather than breaking apart. The IKA MultiDrive MI 250.2 star blade is geometrically engineered for high-precision cutting and shear-based comminution. Driven by the MultiDrive base station at speeds of up to 30,000 revolutions per minute, the sharpened blades sever the macromolecular fibre structures by applying massive, localised shear stresses. This pulling cut continuously disaggregates the sample material and transforms it into a homogeneous, free-flowing matrix. Fluid mechanics and prevention of rotational blockages A fundamental mechanical problem in the high-speed grinding of long fibres is the so-called wrapping effect. Fibrous materials tend to wrap themselves around the rotating tool shaft due to flow turbulence within the reactor. This leads to an exponential increase in torsional resistance, which can thermally overload or jam the drive motor in a fraction of a second. The MI 250.2 star blade counteracts this rheological phenomenon thanks to its multi-bladed star geometry. The specific angles of attack of the blades direct the sample material radially outwards towards the chamber wall and systematically cut the fibres into short fragments, long before static wrapping structures can form around the shaft. Material integrity and mechanical resilience To withstand the continuous mechanical abrasion caused by tough polymers or woody biomass, the star blade is made from solid, highly wear-resistant stainless steel. The blades retain their microscopic sharpness even during extended grinding intervals under high thermal stress. The corrosion-resistant, single-material design can be thoroughly decontaminated chemically and thermally sterilised in an autoclave, which reduces the risk of cross-contamination between batches. Technical details Product type: Star blade (cutting tool / spare part) Processing principle: Cutting and shear comminution Physical scope of application: Tough, elastic and fibrous sample matrices Compatibility (vessel): Suitable exclusively for the IKA MultiDrive MI 250 (including the T version) Compatibility (drive): IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control Material: Solid, highly wear-resistant stainless steel Blade geometry: Multi-bladed star profile to prevent tangling Fitting: Tool-free, form-fit replacement in the grinding vessel Cleaning and hygiene: Fully autoclavable and chemically sterilisable Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive MI 250.2 star blade (stainless steel) (Important note: The MultiDrive drive unit and the MI 250 grinding chamber are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The MI 250.2 star blade is the most important wear part in terms of process engineering for cutting and comminution. Processing extremely tough or abrasive plastics (such as glass-fibre-reinforced polymers) inevitably leads to a gradual blunting of the cutting edges due to micro-collisions, which increases the thermodynamic stress on the sample (frictional heat) in the long term. To ensure gentle, thermally stable sample preparation, we recommend having replacement tools ready at an early stage should cutting performance begin to decline. Solid-state physics and tribological resistance In geochemical analysis, metallurgy and materials testing, the comminution of extremely hard, mineral or ceramic sample matrices reaches fundamental physical limits. Standard stainless steel grinding tools suffer severe tribological deformation and extreme material wear when used on matrices with a Mohs hardness of over 6. The IKA MultiDrive MI 250.3 beater is made entirely of tungsten carbide (WC). This hard material is characterised by extreme structural density and a hardness reaching values of up to 9.5 on the Mohs scale (just below diamond). This material superiority makes the tool resistant to plastic deformation caused by abrasive micro-collisions with hard ores, quartzites, glasses or slags. Kinetics of extreme impact crushing The physical principle of comminution remains identical to that of the standard beater: driven at up to 30,000 revolutions per minute by the MultiDrive system, the MI 250.3 transforms rotational energy into massive kinetic impact energy. Due to the extreme hardness and very high specific gravity of tungsten carbide, the mechanical impulse transferred to the sample material upon impact is significantly more rigid and results in less energy loss than with more elastic steel alloys. The lattice structures of even extremely brittle, crystalline solids are shattered by the incoming shock waves in fractions of a millisecond and converted into a highly fine, analytically usable powder matrix. Analytical purity and iron-free grinding A key problem in trace element analysis (for example, using ICP-OES or XRF) is sample contamination caused by abrasion of the grinding tool (carry-over). Grinding hard rocks with stainless steel tools inevitably leads to a massive introduction of iron, chromium and nickel ions, which distorts or renders impossible the quantitative elemental analysis of these metals in the sample. The use of the MI 250.3 tungsten carbide beater avoids this specific heavy-metal contamination. The sample material is only minimally doped with tungsten and carbon, which is metrologically irrelevant for most iron-focused geological or metallurgical analyses. Technical details Product type: Beater for extreme impact crushing (interchangeable tool) Material: Tungsten carbide (hard metal) Processing principle: Impact and percussion comminution (impact milling) Physical scope of application: Extremely hard and brittle matrices (ores, glass, ceramics) Hardness of the material: approx. 9 to 9.5 on the Mohs scale Analytical advantage: Prevention of iron, chromium and nickel contamination Compatibility (vessel): Exclusively suitable for the IKA MultiDrive MI 250 grinding chamber Compatibility (drive): IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control Fitting: Tool-free, form-fit replacement in the grinding vessel Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive MI 250.3 beater (tungsten carbide) (Important note: The MultiDrive drive unit and the MI 250 grinding chamber are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The MI 250.3 beater is designed for very hard materials. To consistently maintain the analytical integrity of the system during iron-free grinding, it is essential that not only the beater but also the grinding chamber itself does not cause any iron contamination. Although tungsten carbide is extremely hard, its crystalline structure makes it more susceptible to bending or lever forces than ductile stainless steel. The tool must never be forced into the vessel at an angle. Please contact our procurement service at any time for the metrologically correct configuration of your milling systems.
Kinetics of high-speed impact comminution at a larger scale In geochemical analysis, agricultural science and the quality control of building materials, the physical comminution of hard and brittle sample matrices (such as minerals, cereal pellets or ceramic precursors) requires a significant amount of mechanical energy. The IKA MultiDrive MI 400.1 standard grinding tool operates on the process engineering principle of impact and percussion grinding and is specifically dimensioned for the enlarged 400-ml grinding chamber. Driven by the MultiDrive base station (at up to 30,000 revolutions per minute), the rotating stainless-steel beater generates immense peripheral speeds at its extended outer edges. The resulting kinetic energy is transferred to the sample material in fractions of a millisecond upon direct impact. This extreme mechanical impulse overcomes the internal tensile and compressive strength of the solids, leading to the sudden shattering of the crystal lattices. Particle kinematics and volume scaling Processing larger sample volumes (up to 400 ml) significantly alters the macro-kinematics within the enclosed grinding chamber. The specific length geometry of the MI 400.1 beater is precisely calculated, in accordance with the laws of physics, to match the extended radius of the MI 400 chamber. The high-speed rotation hurls the particles against the stainless steel wall with enormous radial acceleration. The increased distance between the axis of rotation and the chamber wall creates a highly efficient kinetic cycle comprising a primary impact and a secondary impact against the wall. This optimised geometry ensures that, despite the increased batch volume, no fluid dynamic dead zones arise and a reproducible particle size distribution is achieved in the analytically relevant micrometre range. Material integrity and tribological resistance When comminuting samples with a high Mohs hardness, the tool is subjected to severe tribological stresses (mechanical wear caused by friction and micro-collisions). To minimise analytical contamination of the sample due to metallic abrasion (carry-over), the MI 400.1 beater is manufactured from a highly wear-resistant, solid stainless steel. The structural integrity of this monomaterial design prevents plastic deformation of the striking edges. The electropolished metal surface can be thoroughly decontaminated chemically and thermally sterilised in an autoclave. Technical details Product type: Standard beater for increased chamber volume (interchangeable tool) Process principle: Impact and percussion comminution (impact milling) Physical scope of application: Dry milling of hard and brittle matrices Compatibility (vessel): Exclusively suitable for the IKA MultiDrive MI 400 (400 ml chamber) Compatibility (drive): IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control Material: Solid, highly wear-resistant stainless steel Assembly: Tool-free, form-fit attachment to the drive shaft inside the vessel Cleaning and hygiene: Fully autoclavable and solvent-resistant Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive MI 400.1 standard beater (stainless steel) (Important note: The MultiDrive drive unit and the large-volume MI 400 grinding chamber are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The MI 400.1 beater is the primary mechanical wear part in impact grinding. The continuous grinding of highly abrasive materials inevitably leads to a gradual blunting of the striking edges. This prolongs the required grinding time and increases the undesirable thermodynamic energy input (friction heat) into the sample. To keep the kinetics of the grinding process and the reproducibility of particle sizes in long-term compliance with standards, regular replacement of the tool is essential. Kinetics of cutting and shear comminution at larger scale In large-volume materials science and biological sample preparation, tough, elastic and extremely fibrous matrices (such as plastics, textiles, paper or dense root tissue) present a major physical challenge. Elastic materials absorb kinetic impact energy rather than breaking. The IKA MultiDrive MI 400.2 star blade is geometrically engineered for high-precision cutting and shear comminution in the scaled 400 ml grinding chamber. Driven by the MultiDrive base station at speeds of up to 30,000 revolutions per minute, the solid star blades sever the macromolecular fibre structures by applying massive, localised shear stresses. This pulling cut continuously disaggregates the sample material and transforms it into a homogeneous, free-flowing matrix, even with large batch volumes. Macro-fluid dynamics and the prevention of rotational blockages A fundamental mechanical problem in the high-speed grinding of long fibres, which is further exacerbated by increased flow turbulence in large-volume chambers, is the so-called wrapping effect. Fibrous materials tend to wrap themselves around the rotating tool shaft. This leads to an exponential increase in torsional resistance, which can cause the drive motor to overheat. The MI 400.2 star blade overcomes this rheological phenomenon thanks to its multi-bladed star geometry, which is calculated to match the radius of the 400-ml chamber. The enlarged blades direct the sample material radially outwards towards the chamber wall and systematically cut the fibres long before static wrapping structures can form around the shaft. Material integrity and mechanical resilience To withstand the continuous mechanical abrasion caused by tough polymers or woody biomass in large batches, the star blade is manufactured from solid, highly wear-resistant stainless steel. The blades retain their microscopic sharpness even during extended grinding intervals under high thermal stress. The corrosion-resistant, single-material design can be thoroughly decontaminated chemically and thermally sterilised in an autoclave, which reduces the risk of carry-over between large batches. Technical details Product type: Star blade (cutting tool for large volumes / spare part) Processing principle: Cutting and shear comminution Physical scope of application: Tough, elastic and fibrous sample matrices Compatibility (vessel): Exclusively suitable for the IKA MultiDrive MI 400 (400 ml chamber) Compatibility (drive): IKA MultiDrive basic and MultiDrive control Material: Solid, highly wear-resistant stainless steel Blade geometry: Scaled, multi-bladed star profile to prevent tangling Fitting: Tool-free, form-fit attachment to the drive shaft inside the vessel Cleaning and hygiene: Fully autoclavable and solvent-resistant Scope of delivery 1 x IKA MultiDrive MI 400.2 star blade (stainless steel) (Important note: The MultiDrive drive unit and the MI 400 grinding chamber are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The MI 400.2 star blade is the most important wear part in terms of process engineering for high-volume cutting and comminution. Processing extremely tough or abrasive samples inevitably leads to gradual blunting of the cutting edges due to mechanical stress. A blunt blade drastically increases the thermodynamic stress on the sample (frictional heat). To ensure gentle, thermally stable preparation of large batches, we recommend having replacement blades ready at an early stage should cutting performance begin to decline.
