Kinetics of impact comminution in a closed system
In the analytical sample preparation of hard, brittle or dry matrices (such as rocks, seeds, tablets or mineral solids), the application of substantial mechanical energy is essential. The IKA MultiDrive MT 150.5 grinding jar operates according to the process engineering principle of high-speed impact and percussion comminution. A solid stainless-steel beater is permanently integrated at the geometric centre of the 150-ml chamber. Driven by the MultiDrive base station at speeds of up to 30,000 revolutions per minute, this tool transfers immense kinetic energy to the solids. The resulting shock waves shatter the macroscopic lattice structures of the sample in fractions of a millisecond, transforming them into an analytically homogeneous, fine-powdered matrix.
Polymer physics and thermomechanical integrity
The high-speed comminution of hard samples induces significant thermodynamic stress (exothermic reaction) on the vessel wall through friction and micro-collisions. The MT 150.5 grinding jars are manufactured from high-performance thermoplastic polymers that exhibit extreme torsional rigidity and structural stability. Unlike conventional single-use tubes, this specific plastic matrix is cross-linked in such a way that it withstands repeated thermal stress. This enables complete thermal sterilisation of the entire grinding chamber (including the integrated stainless-steel rotor) in an autoclave at 121 °C and elevated steam pressure, without the material undergoing plastic deformation or losing its ballistic impact resistance.
Aerosol containment and prevention of carry-over
When grinding toxic, biohazardous or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), preventing uncontrolled aerosol formation is an absolute safety priority. The MT 150 grinding beaker functions as a hermetically sealed containment system. The grinding process takes place in a completely isolated atmosphere, thereby physically protecting the user from respirable fine dust. The option of validated autoclaving of the reusable vessel also guarantees that analytical cross-contamination (carry-over of DNA/RNA fragments or chemical residues) between consecutive batches is physically ruled out on a metrological scale.

Customised requirements & accessories
The MT 150.5 grinding jars are designed for reusable applications; however, during continuous grinding of abrasive materials (such as quartz sand or ores), they are subject to tribological wear on the polymer inner wall and the stainless steel rotor. For highly temperature-sensitive samples, where process-induced frictional heat could lead to denaturation, we strongly recommend using them in combination with the IKA MultiDrive TC 1 protective housing (item no. 0020023489). This housing enables direct cryogenic cooling of the grinding beaker with dry ice throughout the entire grinding process.
