High-shear kinetics on an analytical micro-scale
In molecular biological sample preparation (such as RNA/DNA extraction) and cellular analysis, the physical disruption of soft tissue in the low millilitre range is the fundamental first step in the process. The IKA S 10 D - 7 G - KS - 110 dispersing tool (geometrically specified with a 7 mm stator diameter) transfers the immense kinetic energy of the T 10 basic drive precisely into this microenvironment. The fluid dynamics principle is based on high-speed rotor-stator technology. The liquid medium is drawn into the dispersing head axially and forced through the geometrically defined slots in the stator (G version) by the rotating inner shaft with extreme radial acceleration. The resulting massive hydrodynamic shear stresses and high-frequency pressure fluctuations (cavitation) shatter cell membranes in fractions of a second and convert tissue samples into absolutely homogeneous cell suspensions.
Rheological adaptation to conical reaction vessels
The fluid dynamics of the dispersion are significantly limited by the geometry of the sample vessel. With a shaft length of 110 mm and a diameter of exactly 7 mm, the S 10 D - 7 G - KS - 110 tool is fluid-dynamically designed to operate in standard conical reaction vessels (such as 1.5 ml microcentrifuge tubes or 15 ml Falcon tubes). Thanks to the optimised gap geometry between the rotor and stator, the sample volume (1 to 20 ml H₂O) is circulated turbulently without causing an excessive vortex effect that would draw process-damaging atmospheric oxygen into the medium or eject the sample from the tube.
Physical elimination of molecular carry-over
When processing PCR matrices, forensic traces or highly infectious tissue, microscopic sample carry-over from one batch to the next represents an absolute analytical disaster. Conventional stainless-steel dispersing tools require thermodynamically and chemically intensive decontamination after each process step in order to completely destroy nucleic acid fragments. IKA plastic tools (KS series) solve this critical contamination problem physically by virtue of their design as single-use (or limited-use) tools. After homogenisation of a critical sample, the entire tool is discarded or autoclaved separately. Cross-contamination between serial measurement runs is thus 100 per cent ruled out at the molecular level.
Polymer integrity and biocompatible materials
To ensure the structural integrity of the dispersing head at speeds of up to 30,000 revolutions per minute, the KS tools are made from high-performance, biocompatible thermoplastic polymers (such as polycarbonate/polyethersulphone). These plastics are characterised by high torsional stiffness and mechanical abrasion resistance. During short-term high-shear processes, they do not release any toxic plasticisers or disruptive microparticles into the analytical matrix.

Individual requirements & accessories
The plastic dispersing tools of the KS series require the IKA T 10 basic high-performance drive for process operation. Due to the frictional heat generated in the polymer shear gap at speeds of up to 30,000 rpm, KS tools are not designed for extensive continuous operation and should be treated as consumables to ensure analytical purity in the laboratory at all times.
