Product information "IKA T 10 basic ULTRA-TURRAX disperser, 0.5 to 100 ml, up to 30,000 rpm, 0003737000"

The IKA T 10 basic ULTRA-TURRAX is a hand-held disperser for small sample volumes of between 0.5 and 100 millilitres (H₂O). The unit is powered directly from the 230-volt mains supply, requires no battery and is ready for use immediately upon plugging it in. The speed is infinitely variable from 8,000 to 30,000 revolutions per minute, allowing it to process both low-viscosity aqueous samples and thicker emulsions up to 5,000 mPas.

Continuously variable speed via the scale display

On the T 10 basic, the speed is read from a scale on the housing; the battery-powered ‘battery’ version displays it digitally. This is sufficient for a procedure where the same mark can always be selected, and operation remains simple. When plugged in, the unit draws 125 watts, 75 watts of which are delivered to the motor. A duty cycle of 10 minutes followed by a 5-minute pause protects the motor from overheating during longer production runs.

Tool change without additional tools

The arm has a diameter of 8 millimetres and a length of 100 millimetres. The dispersion tool can be removed without any additional tools using the quick-release coupling. Stainless steel dispersion tools are dismantled and cleaned individually for this purpose, whilst the disposable plastic tools, available in two sizes, come ready-assembled from the packaging and are disposed of after use. This reduces the cleaning effort required between two samples and prevents cross-contamination, for example in PCR analysis. No dispersing tool is included in the scope of delivery; it is selected separately to suit the application.

Compact and lightweight for manual operation

Measuring 178 millimetres in length, 56 in width and 66 in depth, the T 10 basic fits comfortably in the hand. Weighing 0.61 kilograms, the device can be held for extended periods without causing fatigue; the noise level without an attachment fitted is 65 dB(A).

For different mains voltages

In addition to the standard 230-volt version, IKA also supplies the same unit in 115-volt and 100-volt versions, for countries outside the European mains supply or for branch sites with different mains voltages. The IP 30 protection rating in accordance with DIN EN 60529 and a permissible operating range of between 5 and 40 degrees Celsius at up to 80 per cent relative humidity are sufficient for normal day-to-day laboratory use, although the unit is not designed for use outdoors or in damp rooms.

Typical applications

  • Homogenisation of small tissue samples prior to further extraction
  • Preparation and fine dispersion of emulsions and suspensions on a micro-scale
  • Sample preparation for PCR analysis using disposable plastic instruments
  • Routine tasks in teaching and training where a robust instrument that does not require battery maintenance is required

Selection guide: basic or battery?

The T 10 basic runs exclusively on mains power and therefore always requires a power socket within reach. For those who wish to use the disperser under a fume cupboard or on the move without a cable, the T 10 battery ULTRA-TURRAX is the battery-powered variant of the same series, albeit with lower motor power and a lower viscosity limit of 200 mPas. For mobile use with suitable accessories, there are also three kits available, such as the T 10 battery Portable Solution or the T 10 battery Tissue Safe Solution with disposable tools for tissue samples.

Rotor-stator kinematics and sub-millimetre shear stress The physical breakdown of tissues (homogenisation) or the production of highly stable emulsions on a micro-scale requires extremely high-frequency mechanical energy dissipation. The IKA S 10 N - 5 G dispersing tool operates according to the process engineering rotor-stator principle within a working volume of 0.5 to 10 ml. Driven by the T 10 basic drive at up to 30,000 revolutions per minute, the fluid is drawn hydrodynamically into the centre of the rotor and forced outwards by radial centrifugal force. The process-critical stage takes place in the gap, exactly 0.1 mm wide, between the 3.8-mm rotor and the 5-mm stator. The extremely high flow velocities occurring here (peripheral velocities of up to 6.0 m/s) generate enormous mechanical shear forces and localised hydrodynamic cavitation, which irreversibly shatter the cell membranes or droplet geometries in fractions of a millisecond. Thermodynamic limitations and fluid friction The application of such massive kinetic energy within a microscopic shear gap inevitably induces massive thermodynamic exothermic heat (frictional heat). As the surface-to-volume ratio is extremely low in microvolumes (e.g. in Eppendorf vials), this thermal energy cannot be passively dissipated. Without external cryogenic cooling (ice bath), the matrix would boil within seconds and thermolabile analytes (such as RNA, DNA or proteins) would denature. The PTFE shaft’s plain bearing is highly chemically resistant; however, it restricts the system to wet grinding only. Dry running without a liquid matrix would mechanically destroy the tribology of the PTFE bearing due to immediate thermal overload. Material integrity and molecular biological sterility In PCR trace analysis or forensics, the absolute prevention of molecular cross-contamination (carry-over of foreign nucleic acids) is the paramount metrological principle. The media-contacting profile of the S 10 N - 5 G is made entirely from high-alloy, corrosion-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316L) and PTFE. This monolithic material architecture allows for thorough decontamination using aggressive solvents as well as complete thermal sterilisation in an autoclave (121 °C). To maintain hydrodynamic flow and cavitation in the long term, the microscopically fine slots in the stator must be cleaned with metrological precision in order to physically remove biofilms or polymerisation residues. Individual requirements & accessories The S 10 N - 5 G is purely a kinetic interface and does not generate any shear forces without the IKA T 10 basic drive system. In analytical molecular biology, the cleaning protocol for microtubes is extremely time-consuming. For high-throughput laboratories (high sample throughput), we therefore strongly recommend purchasing several identical tools to avoid disrupting the analytical workflow during autoclaving cycles. IKA S 10 N - 8 G dispersing tool, Ø 8 mm, 0003305500
Herstellernummer: 0003305500

The IKA S 10 N - 8 G dispersing tool is a specialised, materials-science-optimised system component designed for precise rotor-stator dispersion in the microlitre and millilitre range. Designed for use with the compact dispersers of the ULTRA-TURRAX T 10 series, this dispersing shaft enables highly efficient sample preparation of sensitive biological, pharmaceutical and chemical media. In applications such as the lysis of tissue cells, the emulsification of cosmetic formulations or the suspension of poorly soluble active ingredients in very small sample vessels, the precise fluid-dynamic geometry of this tool prevents thermal stress on the samples and ensures complete homogenisation. For laboratory managers and procurement officers in industrial research facilities, this tool offers the highest level of validity and process reliability in accordance with stringent GLP and GMP guidelines. Rotor-stator kinetics and process-related shear dynamics The mechanical operating principle is based on the tried-and-tested rotor-stator system, in which the inner rotor moves within the fixed stator at extremely high rotational speeds, preferably up to 30,000 revolutions per minute. Due to the small radial gap between the rotor and stator, the sample medium is drawn axially into the dispersion head and then forced radially through the slots of the generator with enormous kinetic energy. The combination of extremely high shear forces, turbulent shear fields and transient cavitation effects guarantees particle and droplet size reduction down to the micrometre range. The 8 G generator is characterised by an optimised tooth geometry, which enables rapid primary fragmentation of fibrous, tough or cellular sample structures in a single pass. Material resilience and sterilisation cycles The material-specific system limits of the dispersing tool are defined by the consistent use of high-quality stainless steel (material number 1.4404 / AISI 316L) and a robust PTFE bearing. This material composition ensures outstanding chemical resistance to aggressive acids, alkalis and organic solvents, whilst gently preventing metallic cross-contamination in multi-user operations. A crucial criterion for molecular biological and microbiological applications is the instrument’s unrestricted sterilisability: the entire dispersing instrument is fully autoclavable at 121 °C and can be hot-air sterilised up to 180 °C, thereby guaranteeing an absolutely germ-free sample handling process. Ergonomic design features and working area The mechanical design features a stator diameter of 8 millimetres and a shaft length of 115 millimetres, enabling reliable operation in deep, narrow reaction vessels and Eppendorf cups. The working range covers a sample volume of 0.5 to 50 millilitres, allowing expensive active ingredients and reagents to be dispensed and processed in a material-efficient manner. Thanks to the shaft’s easy disassembly, the tool can be cleaned quickly and thoroughly after use, significantly speeding up the logistical workflow in the laboratory and minimising downtime. IKA S 10 D - 7 G - KS - 110 plastic dispersing tool, 24 pieces, 0020002075

High-shear kinetics on an analytical micro-scale In molecular biological sample preparation (such as RNA/DNA extraction) and cellular analysis, the physical disruption of soft tissue in the low millilitre range is the fundamental first step in the process. The IKA S 10 D - 7 G - KS - 110 dispersing tool (geometrically specified with a 7 mm stator diameter) transfers the immense kinetic energy of the T 10 basic drive precisely into this microenvironment. The fluid dynamics principle is based on high-speed rotor-stator technology. The liquid medium is drawn into the dispersing head axially and forced through the geometrically defined slots in the stator (G version) by the rotating inner shaft with extreme radial acceleration. The resulting massive hydrodynamic shear stresses and high-frequency pressure fluctuations (cavitation) shatter cell membranes in fractions of a second and convert tissue samples into absolutely homogeneous cell suspensions. Rheological adaptation to conical reaction vessels The fluid dynamics of the dispersion are significantly limited by the geometry of the sample vessel. With a shaft length of 110 mm and a diameter of exactly 7 mm, the S 10 D - 7 G - KS - 110 tool is fluid-dynamically designed to operate in standard conical reaction vessels (such as 1.5 ml microcentrifuge tubes or 15 ml Falcon tubes). Thanks to the optimised gap geometry between the rotor and stator, the sample volume (1 to 20 ml H₂O) is circulated turbulently without causing an excessive vortex effect that would draw process-damaging atmospheric oxygen into the medium or eject the sample from the tube. Physical elimination of molecular carry-over When processing PCR matrices, forensic traces or highly infectious tissue, microscopic sample carry-over from one batch to the next represents an absolute analytical disaster. Conventional stainless-steel dispersing tools require thermodynamically and chemically intensive decontamination after each process step in order to completely destroy nucleic acid fragments. IKA plastic tools (KS series) solve this critical contamination problem physically by virtue of their design as single-use (or limited-use) tools. After homogenisation of a critical sample, the entire tool is discarded or autoclaved separately. Cross-contamination between serial measurement runs is thus 100 per cent ruled out at the molecular level. Polymer integrity and biocompatible materials To ensure the structural integrity of the dispersing head at speeds of up to 30,000 revolutions per minute, the KS tools are made from high-performance, biocompatible thermoplastic polymers (such as polycarbonate/polyethersulphone). These plastics are characterised by high torsional stiffness and mechanical abrasion resistance. During short-term high-shear processes, they do not release any toxic plasticisers or disruptive microparticles into the analytical matrix. Technical details Product type: Plastic dispersion tool (KS) Fluid dynamics principle: Rotor-stator (high-shear) Working volume (based on H₂O): 1 to 20 ml Stator diameter: 7 mm Shaft length: 110 mm Gap dimension (rotor/stator): Geometrically optimised for cell suspensions Material: High-performance plastic (polymer) Analytical focus: Prevention of cross-contamination (carry-over) Compatible drive: IKA T 10 basic / T 10 standard Hygiene and cleaning: Designed for single use or thermal autoclavation Packaging unit (PU): 24 pieces per set Contents 24 x IKA S 10 D - 7 G - KS - 110 plastic dispersing tool (Important note: The IKA T 10 dispersing drive, as well as stands and sample vessels, are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The plastic dispersing tools of the KS series require the IKA T 10 basic high-performance drive for process operation. Due to the frictional heat generated in the polymer shear gap at speeds of up to 30,000 rpm, KS tools are not designed for extensive continuous operation and should be treated as consumables to ensure analytical purity in the laboratory at all times.
