Kern ODC 241 Microscope Tablet Camera, 5 MP, 9.7-inch Touchscreen, C-mount

The Kern ODC 241 combines a 5-megapixel microscope camera with an Android tablet in a single device. Kern describes it as a 2-in-1 digital microscopy solution and as a universal system for all trinocular microscopes with a C-mount adapter. The live image appears on the 9.7-inch touchscreen; recording, measurement and documentation are carried out via the pre-installed S-EYE app, with no need for a computer.

Camera and display

The sensor is a Sony CMOS measuring 1/2.8-inch with 5 megapixels; the camera operates in colour. The HD display is a touchscreen with a diagonal of 9.7 inches and a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels. The frame rate is between 15 and 30 frames per second. The camera is attached to the microscope’s objective tube via a C-mount connector. The device measures 238 x 182 x 51 mm and has a net weight of 0.8 kg.

S-EYE software

The app captures images and videos and covers image analysis, measurement and documentation. It measures distances, areas and angles, and also features a manual counting function. The live image can be transmitted to an external screen via Micro-HDMI. Data is saved to a USB stick or SD card, and a USB mouse can also be connected to the USB port. An overview of the interfaces: Wi-Fi with wireless data transfer, Micro-HDMI, MicroSD and USB 2.0.

Connection to the microscope

A C-mount adapter is fitted between the phototube and the camera. This is not included in the Scope of delivery and depends on the microscope model. Kern requires trinocular microscopes; binocular heads without a third tube outlet are therefore not compatible. Kern supplies its own adapters for this purpose, depending on the model.

The camera is listed by Kern as an accessory for the microscopes mentioned. The pre-assembled set comprising a stereo zoom microscope and this camera is available as the OZL 464T241.

Power supply and specifications

The camera is powered via a plug-in power supply unit rated for 100 to 240 V and 50 or 60 Hz (Protection Class III, detachable cable). The storage temperature ranges from -5 to 40 °C. A calibration slide is supplied; a further calibration slide with a micrometre is listed as an accessory (ODC-A2404).

Kern describes the ODC 241 as ideal for school pupils and university students undergoing training, as well as for demonstration purposes in the laboratory. It has been developed for the simple and direct observation of the sample on the screen.
