A laboratory fridge-freezer with special safety features is required for the storage of flammable substances that may create explosive atmospheres. The Liebherr SCFfg 4002 laboratory fridge-freezer combination complies with the ATEX Directive and, according to the type plate, has an interior free from ignition sources. It combines maximum cooling capacity with reliable temperature stability. The housing and door are made of steel, whilst the inner compartment is made of plastic.

Technology and cooling performance

The dynamic cooling system in the fridge compartment ensures even temperature distribution, and defrosting takes place automatically. The fridge compartment operates in the range from +3 °C to +16 °C, whilst the freezer compartment operates from -9 °C to -30 °C, in each case at a permissible ambient temperature of +10 °C to 35 °C. Both temperatures are displayed digitally on the outside. R 600a is used as the refrigerant (charge: 75 g), an environmentally friendly choice with low global warming potential. In the event of a fault, the unit emits visual and audible warnings, ensuring that temperature deviations are immediately noticeable. Via a retrofittable Wi-Fi/LAN interface, the fridge-freezer can be integrated into an existing laboratory network if required.

Safety: ATEX-compliant, ignition-source-free interior

The ignition-source-free interior makes the SCFfg 4002 the ideal choice for laboratories that need to store flammable solvents, chemicals or other substances where no ignition sources are permitted inside the unit. For example, in a chemistry or analytical laboratory, this ensures the safe storage of flammable reagents during routine operations without having to resort to separate refrigeration and freezing units. As both temperature zones are housed in a single unit, the appliance also saves floor space compared with two separate units, which is an advantage in laboratories with limited floor space.

Interior layout and ease of use

In the refrigeration compartment, five glass shelves, each with a load capacity of 40 kg, ensure stable, easily accessible storage; the freezer compartment features three shelves. The antimicrobial handle with integrated opening mechanism makes operation easier, even when wearing gloves, as is common in everyday laboratory work, and reduces the transmission of germs at a frequently touched part of the appliance. The door hinge is on the right but can be reversed, allowing the appliance to be flexibly adapted to the available space. The fridge compartment defrosts automatically, whilst the freezer compartment is defrosted manually.

One unit for two temperature zones

With a net capacity of 261 l (377 l gross) and a height of 204.4 cm, the SCFfg 4002 offers significantly more usable interior space than a standard fridge or freezer of the same footprint, as the fridge and freezer compartments are housed one above the other in a single cabinet. For laboratories that require both refrigerated and deep-frozen storage for flammable or combustible substances, but do not have space for two separate ignition-source-free units, this is the more space-saving solution compared to a dedicated freezer such as the SFFfg series. On the other hand, those who require exclusively deep-freeze storage without a refrigeration compartment and wish to have more freezer space are better served by a dedicated ignition-source-free freezer.

Manufacture and origin

The SCFfg 4002 is manufactured at the Liebherr plant in Lienz, Austria, where it succeeds the previous model, the LCexv 4010. As part of the ‘Performance’ segment of Liebherr laboratory equipment, it is positioned in the premium specification range, featuring digital temperature monitoring in both zones and a retrofittable network connection.

The SCFfg 4002 comes into its own wherever flammable or combustible substances need to be stored under both refrigerated and deep-frozen conditions:
