Anyone working in a laboratory with highly flammable or explosive substances who wishes to use the space beneath a worktop rather than a freestanding unit will need an under-counter unit with a spark-free interior. The Liebherr SFUfg 1001 is an under-counter deep-freezer with ATEX 95 certification, a net capacity of 68 litres and a temperature range of -9 °C to -30 °C, which can be flexibly integrated into laboratory furniture thanks to its front-mounted ventilation system.

Ignition-source-free interior with ATEX 95 certification

In addition to the general laboratory standard series in accordance with EN IEC 60079-7, the SFUfg 1001 is certified and, according to the type plate, bears the designation ‘Laboratory freezer, static, ignition-source-free interior’. This makes it the ideal choice for storing chemicals and samples where an ignition-source-free interior is required or recommended. The unit is also certified to IEC 60068-3, IEC 61010-1, IEC 61010-2-011 and IEC 61326-1.

Under-counter unit rather than freestanding: for integration into furniture

Unlike the freestanding benchtop units in this series, the SFUfg 1001 is specifically designed for installation beneath a laboratory worktop. The front-mounted air intake and exhaust eliminate the need for a separate ventilation system within the cabinet; the installation height can be adjusted via the four levelling feet within a range of 0 to 60 mm to precisely match the height of the surrounding cabinetry, which ranges from 82 to 88 cm.

Temperature stability and SmartFrost technology

According to the manufacturer, the SFUfg 1001 achieves a temperature stability of ±5 °C and, thanks to SmartFrost technology, reduces ice build-up inside the unit, meaning that manual defrosting is required less frequently than with traditional static freezers. The temperature is displayed on an external digital display, whilst the unit signals faults both visually and audibly. A Wi-Fi/LAN interface can be retrofitted if required.

Robust design for continuous operation

The housing and door are made of steel, whilst the inner chamber is made of white plastic. The antimicrobial handle with an opening mechanism facilitates daily operation; the door can be mechanically locked and is available with a right- or left-hand hinge. According to the product data sheet, the unit is designed for cleanroom use in accordance with ISO EN 14644-1 (ISO Class 6) and complies with GMP Class B.

Compact design with a net volume of 68 litres

With internal dimensions of 52.0 x 42.4 x 38.6 cm, the SFUfg 1001 offers a net volume of 68 litres for the storage of chemicals and samples, despite its compact under-counter design. With a net weight of 34.70 kg and packaging dimensions of 61.5 x 71.0 x 89.0 cm, the unit can be easily delivered and installed in the designated cabinet. The power rating of 2.0 A at 220–240 V allows operation from a standard laboratory socket without the need for a separate electrical installation.

Performance class with specialised ATEX equipment

The SFUfg 1001 belongs to the Performance Class of the Liebherr laboratory range and, like its static sister model, the SFUsg 1001, features basic mechanical equipment with manual defrosting and a mechanical door lock instead of a networked touchscreen control system. The key additional feature here lies not in automation, but in safety technology: only the SFUfg 1001 features a spark-free interior and ATEX 95 certification, whilst Perfection models such as the SFFvh or SFTvh instead rely on automatic NoFrost defrosting and integrated network connectivity.

Typical applications

The SFUfg 1001 is suitable for laboratories wishing to store chemicals or highly flammable substances beneath the worktop without having to install a separate freestanding unit. For example, in a chemistry laboratory, the deep-freeze storage of flammable samples can be integrated directly into the workstation without losing valuable floor space in the room. Front-mounted ventilation is also a clear advantage when retrofitting existing laboratory furniture, as there is no need to incorporate an additional ventilation duct into the unit.
