With an internal volume of 241 litres, the Memmert ICO240 CO₂ incubator creates a precisely controlled CO₂, humidity and temperature environment for cell culture – from routine incubation to applications with high demands on reproducibility and documentation, such as in cell culture and microbiology laboratories, as well as in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research.
Precise CO₂, humidity and temperature control
A dual-beam NDIR system controls CO₂ in the range of 0 to 20 per cent with an accuracy of 0.1 per cent and a temporal fluctuation of just ±0.2 per cent – including self-diagnosis, an audible error signal and barometric pressure compensation. The temperature can be set from +18 to +50 °C (operating range: 5 °C above room temperature to +50 °C) with an accuracy of 0.1 °C; at 37 °C, the temperature deviation inside the chamber is ±0.3 K, with a fluctuation over time of ±0.1 K. Humidity is limited as standard by a Peltier element to a maximum of 93 % rF ±2.5 % (when the water tray is in use); Optionally (Option K7), active humidity control from 40 to 97 % RH and an RH-off mode are available. Two Pt100 sensors of DIN Class A quality (4-wire configuration) monitor each other and provide redundancy in the event of a fault.
Built-in sterilisation function
A standard programme sterilises the interior in 60 minutes at 180 °C – without the need to remove sensors beforehand. This significantly simplifies decontamination between different culture batches and reduces the risk of cross-contamination in day-to-day laboratory work.
ControlCOCKPIT TwinDISPLAY and documentation
Two high-resolution TFT colour displays (languages include German, English, Spanish and French) clearly show all process parameters. Programmes can be created, managed and transferred via Ethernet LAN or USB using the supplied AtmoCONTROL software; the programme sequence remains stored even after a power cut. The AutoSAFETY (ASF) function provides automatic over- and under-temperature protection based on the setpoint, supplemented by self-diagnostics for temperature and CO₂ as well as visual and audible alarms.
Features for everyday laboratory use
The corrosion-resistant interior, made from 1.4301 stainless steel, accommodates up to 12 perforated stainless steel shelves (2 included), with a maximum load of 140 kg (15 kg per shelf). The fully insulated stainless steel door with a 2-point locking mechanism and the inner glass door with an opening for gas sampling (Ø 8 mm) allow controlled access without unnecessarily disturbing the climate inside the chamber. A 6-sided multifunctional heating system, including door and rear wall heating, reliably prevents condensation.
Optional extras
Users requiring actively controlled humidity beyond the standard specification can have the ICO240 upgraded with Option K7 to cover a humidity range of 40 to 97 % rF, as well as an rF-off mode. For applications where the oxygen content also needs to be controlled – such as in hypoxic cell culture – Option T6 provides O₂ control within a range of 1 to 20 per cent. Both options can be combined with the existing ControlCOCKPIT TwinDISPLAY control system without the need for a different base unit.
Operating conditions and installation
The ICO240 is designed for operation at ambient temperatures between +10 and +35 °C and a maximum relative humidity of 70 per cent (non-condensing), up to an installation altitude of 2,000 m above sea level. It can be connected to either 230 V or 115 V (50/60 Hz) with a power consumption of approximately 1650 W. With a net weight of approximately 110 kg and shipping dimensions of 840 × 1360 × 900 mm, appropriate logistics planning is recommended for delivery and installation.

Memmert is transitioning the ICO series of CO₂ incubators to a new platform. The new variants are already available to order; the final order deadline for the current ICO240 model described here is 6 November 2026.
