The Memmert UN110 universal cabinet is one of the most frequently ordered heating and drying cabinets in the entire Memmert range at LT Laborhandel. With an internal volume of 108 litres, it marks the transition from the compact benchtop units of the UN series to a noticeably larger footprint and greater loading capacity, whilst continuing to operate using purely natural convection within a temperature range of 20 to 300 °C. For laboratories that regularly dry, temper or cure larger batches or several batches in parallel, whilst requiring a vibration-free environment, the UN110 is the obvious choice between a compact benchtop unit and a large-volume floor-standing cabinet.

Natural convection for larger batches

The Memmert UN110 universal oven also deliberately dispenses with an air turbine and a forced-air fan. Heat rises within the chamber purely by thermal convection, without dust or light sample particles being stirred up by a fan. The operating temperature range therefore starts from at least 5 °C above room temperature up to 300 °C. With an internal volume of 108 litres and several shelves loaded simultaneously, uniform natural heat distribution remains crucial, particularly when sensitive or exposed samples must not be affected by air movement. A Pt100 temperature sensor of DIN Class A in a 4-wire configuration ensures a setting accuracy of 0.1 °C up to 99.9 °C and 0.5 °C from 100 °C onwards.

ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY: Operation and data acquisition

The UN110 is controlled via the ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY, an adaptive, multifunctional digital PID microprocessor controller with a high-resolution TFT colour graphic display. The temperature can be set in Celsius or Fahrenheit, as can the position of the exhaust air flap, the programme duration, the time zone and summer/winter time. A digital countdown timer with target time can be set from 1 minute to 99 days; the SetpointWait function only starts the process time once the setpoint temperature has actually been reached, ensuring reproducible results for larger batches. The data logger can be read out and managed via the Ethernet interface; a time-limited trial version of the AtmoCONTROL software is available for download.

Capacity and dimensions of the Memmert UN110 universal chamber

The interior measures 560 x 480 x 400 mm, whilst the external dimensions are 745 x 864 x 584 mm – a noticeably larger footprint than the smaller UN30, UN55 and UN75 models. Two electropolished stainless steel wire shelves are included as standard, and the cabinet can accommodate up to five shelves in total. The maximum load capacity is 175 kg for the entire unit and 20 kg per shelf. The interior is made of easy-to-clean stainless steel, reinforced with deep-drawn ribbing, and features protected, integrated 4-sided all-round heating; the housing is made of textured stainless steel with a fully galvanised sheet steel rear panel. The UN110 is connected to 230 V (approx. 2,800 W) or 115 V (approx. 1,800 W), in each case at 50/60 Hz.

Selection guide: the move to a larger footprint

The Memmert UN series with natural convection covers internal volumes ranging from 32 to 749 litres. The UN110 is the first model in the series to offer a noticeably larger footprint compared with the three smaller benchtop models.

For those upgrading from the UN75 (74 litres, same footprint as the UN55) and requiring more volume and a higher load capacity per unit, the UN110 is the ideal next step. Distinction: natural convection versus forced air circulation

Anyone requiring more active heat distribution and shorter heating times for a similar volume – for example, with densely packed batches of varying sizes – will find the ideal forced-air equivalent in the Memmert UF160 universal cabinet, which features an electronically controlled fan. Its operating temperature range starts at 10 °C rather than 5 °C above room temperature. For samples sensitive to dust or air movement, the natural convection of the UN110 remains the more suitable choice. A significantly more compact natural convection model for smaller sample quantities is the Memmert UN30 universal cabinet. Like all standard models in the UN series, the UN110 operates with the ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY, rather than the TwinDISPLAY reserved for the ‘plus’ variants.

Safety in accordance with DIN 12880, even with larger batches

The UN110 features adjustable electronic temperature monitoring and a mechanical temperature limiter of protection class 1 in accordance with DIN 12880, which switches off the heating when the temperature reaches approximately 20 °C above the maximum cabinet temperature – an important safety feature for overnight or weekend runs when several shelves are occupied simultaneously. A self-diagnostic system assists with fault-finding, and 3 freely selectable temperature values can be calibrated. The unit bears CE and EAC markings as well as a UL mark.

Installation, operation and disposal

For operation, a minimum clearance of 15 cm from the wall and a maximum clearance of 20 cm from the ceiling must be maintained; a minimum of 5 cm is sufficient on either side relative to the wall or an adjacent unit. With a net weight of around 74 kg, it is recommended that the UN110 be placed on a fixed, load-bearing base rather than simply on a laboratory bench. Installation is permitted at altitudes of up to 2,000 m above sea level at an ambient temperature of 5 °C to 40 °C and a relative humidity of no more than 80 per cent, non-condensing. Electrically, the UN110 is designed for overvoltage category II and pollution degree 2; it must only be transported in an upright position. As an electrical appliance, the UN110 is subject to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act at the end of its service life and must not be disposed of with household waste.
