Memmert UN30 Universal Oven, compact heating and drying oven with natural convection, 32 litres, up to 300 °C

The Memmert UN30 universal cabinet is the most compact model in the Memmert universal cabinet range and operates using purely natural convection rather than an active fan. With an internal volume of 32 litres, a temperature range of 20 to 300 °C and a unit weight of around 45 kg, it fits on a laboratory bench, where space is usually more limited than in the equipment area of a permanent laboratory. As there is no active air circulation inside the chamber, the UN30 is particularly suitable for applications where vibration-free and low-dust operation are more important than the shortest possible heating time, such as when gently drying light samples or fine powders.

Natural convection for vibration-free, low-dust operation

Unlike the UF models in the series, the Memmert UN30 universal oven deliberately does not feature an air turbine or a recirculation motor. Heat rises within the chamber purely by convection, without a fan setting air, dust or light sample components in motion. As a result, the operating temperature range starts from at least 5 °C above room temperature up to 300 °C, whilst the forced-air models in the UF series only start from 10 °C above room temperature; however, thanks to forced air circulation, they heat up more quickly and distribute the temperature more actively. For samples that are sensitive to air movement – such as loose powders, fine fibres or specimens that must not be blown away by draughts – the UN30’s natural convection is the ideal choice. A DIN Class A Pt100 temperature sensor with 4-wire measurement ensures the same setting accuracy as in the larger models, despite the simpler airflow principle: 0.1 °C to 99.9 °C and 0.5 °C from 100 °C.

ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY: compact operation with a full range of functions

Despite its compact design, the UN30 does not compromise on any of the control functions found in the larger models. The ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY, an adaptive, multifunctional digital PID microprocessor controller with a TFT colour graphic display, regulates temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, as well as the position of the exhaust air damper, programme duration, time zone and summer/winter time. As no air turbine is fitted, the only parameter omitted is that for the recirculation fan speed. A digital countdown timer with target time can be set from 1 minute to 99 days; the SetpointWait function only starts the process time once the setpoint temperature has been reached. The data logger can be read out and managed via the Ethernet interface; a time-limited trial version of the AtmoCONTROL software is available for download, whilst a USB stick containing the full version is available as an optional accessory.

Compact dimensions of the Memmert UN30 universal chamber

The internal dimensions are 400 x 320 x 250 mm, whilst the external dimensions are 585 x 704 x 434 mm. One electropolished stainless steel wire shelf is included as standard; the cabinet can accommodate up to three shelves in total. The maximum load capacity is 60 kg for the entire unit and 20 kg per insert, which is entirely sufficient for smaller sample batches and individual containers. As with the larger models, the interior consists of easy-to-clean stainless steel, reinforced by deep-drawn ribbing, with protected, integrated 4-sided all-round heating; the housing is made of textured stainless steel with a fully galvanised sheet steel rear panel. The fully insulated stainless steel door locks via a 2-point compression door latch. The UN30 is connected to a 230 V or 115 V supply, in each case at 50/60 Hz, with a power consumption of around 1,600 W.

Selection guide: choosing the right size from the UN series

The Memmert universal cabinet series with natural convection covers a range of internal volumes from 32 to 749 litres. The UN30 is the smallest model in the range. When choosing the right size, the key factors – apart from internal volume – are the footprint and the number of shelves required; not every larger model takes up more floor space than the next smaller one.

The UN30 is the right choice when space on the laboratory bench is limited and only a few samples are being processed at a time. If the number of samples increases, the Memmert UN55 universal cabinet is the obvious next size up, offering 53 litres instead of 32 and 4 shelves instead of 3, whilst taking up only slightly more floor space. Distinction: TwinDISPLAY and the forced-air version

Within the UN30 series, the most important purchasing decision is between SingleDISPLAY and TwinDISPLAY. The UN30 described here operates with a single Pt100 sensor and one display; for unattended processes with higher safety requirements, the Memmert UN30plus universal cabinet offers two redundant Pt100 sensors as well as two TFT displays instead of one. Those who would instead prefer to benefit from the shorter heating-up time offered by active air circulation and do not require vibration-free operation will find the Memmert UF30 universal cabinet to be the equivalent model featuring forced air circulation rather than natural convection, whilst retaining the same internal volume of 32 litres.

Safety in accordance with DIN 12880, even in the smallest model

The UN30 also features adjustable electronic temperature monitoring plus a mechanical temperature limiter of protection class 1 in accordance with DIN 12880, which switches off the heating when the temperature reaches approximately 20 °C above the maximum cabinet temperature. A self-diagnostic system assists with fault-finding, and three freely selectable temperature values can be calibrated. CE and EAC markings, as well as a UL certification mark, are present.

Application, installation and disposal

The same installation rules apply to the Memmert UN30 universal cabinet when placed on a laboratory bench as for the larger models in the series: a minimum clearance of 15 cm from the wall, a maximum clearance of 20 cm from the ceiling, and a minimum clearance of 5 cm on each side from a wall or adjacent unit. It may be installed at altitudes of up to 2,000 m above sea level at ambient temperatures of 5 °C to 40 °C and a maximum relative humidity of 80 per cent, non-condensing. Electrically, the UN30 is designed for overvoltage category II and pollution degree 2; it must only be transported in an upright position. The interior, made of easy-to-clean stainless steel, can be cleaned using standard laboratory cleaning products. As an electrical appliance, the UN30 is subject to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act at the end of its service life and must not be disposed of with household waste; see Regulatory Information below.
