The Restek leak detector is an electronic handheld instrument for gas leak detection in GC systems. It detects a wide range of gases, including helium, nitrogen, hydrogen and CO2, and shows the severity of a leak with an audible tone and an LED display. The battery lasts up to 12 hours between two charges, and charging is via USB or with the universal mains adapter.

Display and gas types

The instrument reports a leak in two ways. A tone indicates audibly, and an LED display visually, how severe the leak is. Both signals reflect the severity, so a leak that has been found can be classified. Anyone who is not looking at the display can rely on the tone, and anyone who cannot hear the tone can rely on the LED.

A wide range of gases is detected. These include helium, nitrogen, hydrogen and CO2. With this instrument, hydrogen can only be searched for in trace amounts and in a non-flammable environment. The leak detector is not intended for leaks in a flammable environment, for which a combustible gas detector is to be used.

Handheld instrument, battery and probe

The leak detector is an ergonomic handheld instrument with robust side grips. The probe unit is easy to clean, and the instrument has a convenient holder for the probe. An automatic shut-off ends operation by itself.

The operating time is up to 12 hours between charges, and operation is also possible while charging. Anyone planning a longer search can therefore let the instrument keep running on mains power or on the USB charging cable. For charging, a 6 ft USB charging cable (about 1.8 m) and a universal mains adapter are included. The mains adapter is designed for the regions USA, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and Japan. The instrument is supplied in a carrying case.

Leak detector and flowmeter compared

Both instruments belong to the Restek measurement technology for gas chromatography, but solve different tasks. The leak detector finds and assesses leaks. The ProFLOW 6000 flowmeter, by contrast, measures the volume flow of gases between 0.5 and 500 mL/min with an accuracy of ±2 % of reading or ±0.2 mL/min, whichever is greater. The ProFLOW 6000 runs on two AA batteries, the leak detector on a battery that is charged via USB or mains adapter. Both instruments are handheld devices with side grips, and both switch off automatically. Anyone who wants to search for leaks and measure volume flows on the same system orders both instruments separately.
