Product information "Restek Rtx-5ms GC Capillary Column, 30 m, 0.25 mm ID, 0.25 µm, 12623"
The Rtx-5ms has a stationary phase of 5 % diphenyl and 95 % dimethyl polysiloxane, crosslinked on fused silica. It is 30 m long, with an inner diameter of 0.25 mm and a film thickness of 0.25 µm. The column is tested to strict specifications for low column bleed and high inertness.
Polarity, USP and equivalents
The polarity matches the Rtx-5, and column bleed is lower. The phase is listed under the USP designations G27 and G36. From other manufacturers, the following are considered comparable: Agilent DB-5, HP-5, HP-5ms, Ultra-2 and CP-Sil 8 CB, Phenomenex ZB-5 and ZB-5MS, and Supelco SPB-5. Comparable column part numbers are Agilent 19091S-433 and Scion/Bruker/Varian CP5860.
Temperature range
The Rtx-5ms withstands up to 330 °C isothermal and 350 °C programmed, with a lower limit of -60 °C. The first temperature value applies to isothermal operation, the second to temperature programs.
Which 5-phase fits
Among the 30 m columns with a 5-phase in the shop, the phase and temperature limits differ, and for the Rtx-5 the dimensions as well. The Rtx-5 has the same polarity, but 0.32 mm ID and 1.00 µm film thickness.
| Column | Phase | Dimensions and temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Rtx-5ms (this page) | 5 % diphenyl, 95 % dimethyl polysiloxane | 30 m, 0.25 mm ID, 0.25 µm, -60 to 330/350 °C |
| Rtx-5 | Diphenyl dimethyl polysiloxane | 30 m, 0.32 mm ID, 1.00 µm, -60 to 325/350 °C |
| Rxi-5ms | Diphenyl dimethyl polysiloxane | 30 m, 0.25 mm ID, 0.25 µm, -60 to 330/350 °C |
| Rxi-5Sil MS | Silarylene phase, phenyl groups in the polymer backbone | 30 m, 0.25 mm ID, 0.25 µm, -60 to 320/350 °C |
Bleed and detector
Column bleed occurs when degradation products of the stationary phase elute from the column, especially at high temperatures. It raises the baseline and increases background noise at the detector. On the Rtx-5ms, bleed is expressly a test criterion. The Rtx-5 also has extremely low column bleed, and on the Rtx-5ms it is lower still.
Typical applications
- General-purpose column, also for pharmaceuticals
- Solvent impurities
- Pesticides
- Hydrocarbons
- PCB congeners, for example Aroclor mixtures
- Essential oils
- Semivolatiles
PCB congeners are the individual polychlorinated biphenyls, and Aroclor is the trade name of technical PCB mixtures. Semivolatiles (SVOCs) have a higher boiling point than the classic volatile organic compounds.
