Product information "Restek Ultra Aqueous C18 LC Column, 3 µm, 100 Å, 100 x 2.1 mm, 9178312"
The Ultra Aqueous C18 is an aqueous-compatible reversed-phase column with a C18 phase (USP L1). It is 100 mm long, has a 2.1 mm inner diameter and 3 µm particles.
Phase structure
The particles are fully porous, the pores measure 100 Å and the specific surface area is 300 m²/g. The carbon content of the phase is 15 %, and there is no endcapping. The column is designed for small molecules.
Aqueous mobile phases
The column can also be used with 100 % aqueous mobile phases, the pH range is 2.5 to 8.0 and the maximum temperature is 80 °C. Comparable phases from other manufacturers are Phenomenex AQUA C18, Aquasil C18 and Hypersil Gold AQ from Thermo Fisher Scientific as well as YMC ODS-Aq.
Comparison with the Force Biphenyl
The Force Biphenyl has the same dimensions (100 x 2.1 mm), but 1.8 µm particles, a biphenyl phase, endcapping and a pH range of 2.0 to 8.0. In particle diameter, the Ultra Aqueous C18 at 3 µm lies between the Force Biphenyl and the Allure Silica with 5 µm.
| Ultra Aqueous C18 | Force Biphenyl | |
| Phase | C18 | Biphenyl |
| USP designation | L1 | L11 |
| Particle size | 3 µm | 1.8 µm |
| Endcapping | No | Yes |

| pH range | 2.5 to 8.0 | 2.0 to 8.0 |
Short profile
The part number suits methods that are to run on an aqueous-compatible C18 and for which 100 mm length and 3 µm particles are the desired format. The pH range of 2.5 to 8.0 covers acidic to slightly basic mobile phases. The choice therefore depends on three features: C18, 3 µm, 100 x 2.1 mm.
Ordering and dimension
Part number 9178312 stands for the dimension 100 x 2.1 mm with 3 µm particles. Other lengths, inner diameters and particle sizes of the Ultra series have their own part numbers.
Typical applications
- Separations of small molecules in reversed-phase mode with a C18 phase (USP L1)
- Methods with aqueous mobile phases, for which the column is stated as aqueous-compatible
- Methods in the column format 100 x 2.1 mm with 3 µm particles, when a C18 phase with 15 % carbon is wanted

Individual requirements and procurement service
Restek offers the Ultra series in many dimensions and particle sizes, plus further C18, biphenyl and normal phases. For metal-sensitive components there are inert LC columns. LT procures columns and accessories on request, including by Restek part number. Anyone looking for a different length or particle size of the same phase simply names the desired dimension.
