Product information "Binder ED 56 Drying and Heating Oven, Avantgarde.Line with natural convection, 57 l, up to 300 °C, 9010-0333"
A forced-air drying oven is not always the best choice for the warm storage or drying of samples that cannot tolerate air movement. The Binder ED 56 operates using natural convection rather than an active fan: the heat is distributed solely by thermal buoyancy within the chamber. With a usable volume of 57 litres and a temperature range from 5 °C above ambient temperature up to 300 °C, the ED 56 covers a wide range of applications within the Avantgarde.Line, without any of the air turbulence associated with a forced-air unit.
Natural convection: slower, but gentler
Without active air circulation, heating up takes longer than with a comparably sized forced-air model such as the FED 56, which has identical dimensions (heating time to 150 °C takes around 15 minutes for that model). With the ED 56, the heating-up time to 150 °C is around 50 minutes; once the door is opened, the setpoint temperature is reached again after approximately 19 minutes. In return, air movement inside the chamber remains minimal: an advantage for samples where turbulence or uneven airflow must be avoided.
Controls, safety and data logging
The ED 56 is controlled via a controller with an LCD display. A USB port enables the recording of process data. At 150 °C, the spatial temperature deviation is 2.3 ± K, the temporal deviation is 0.4 ± K, and energy consumption is 105 Wh/h (100 °C) and 180 Wh/h (150 °C) respectively. An integrated Class 2 temperature selector limiter in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, provides additional process safety during unattended runs.
Typical applications
The ED 56 is suitable for drying and heating applications where air movement inside the chamber is undesirable or where a documented, reproducible process record is required.
- Drying of laboratory glassware and sample containers without air turbulence
- Warm storage of dust- or particle-sensitive materials
- Heat treatment with documented data recording via USB
- Routine operation in quality assurance and industrial laboratories
With external dimensions of 560 x 565 x 625 mm and a weight of 39 kg, the ED 56 fits on most laboratory benches. Two chrome-plated shelf grids are included as standard.

Selection guide within the range
The Avantgarde.Line ED series with natural convection comprises six sizes at BINDER. All share the same temperature range, a controller with an LCD display and USB data logging, but differ significantly in terms of usable volume and footprint.
| Model size | Internal volume | External dimensions (W x D x H) |
| ED 23 (9010-0190) | 20 l | 435 x 520 x 495 mm |
| ED 56 (9010-0333) | 57 l | 560 x 565 x 625 mm |
| ED 115 (9010-0335) | 114 l | 710 x 605 x 705 mm |
| ED 260 (9010-0339) | 255 l | 810 x 760 x 940 mm |
| ED 400 (9010-0075) | 400 l | 1,235 x 765 x 1,025 mm |
| ED 720 (9010-0341) | 743 l | 1,165 x 870 x 1,590 mm |
The ED 56 described here, with a capacity of 57 litres, is suitable for small to medium-sized batches on the laboratory bench. If this volume is insufficient, the next size up, the ED 115 with a capacity of 114 litres, is the obvious choice; for significantly larger batches, the ED 260 with a capacity of 255 litres is recommended.
Differences between forced-air, Solid.Line and the FP and M equipment variants
The most important distinction within the BINDER range is between natural convection and forced-air circulation: The ED 56 operates without an active fan; its forced-air counterpart with the same capacity is the FD 56. Forced-air heating heats up significantly faster (the FD 56 reaches 150 °C in around 15 minutes, compared with 50 minutes for the ED 56), but in doing so creates air movement inside the chamber, which is undesirable for some samples.
Users who require programmable temperature and time profiles in addition to forced-air circulation will not find these functions in the ED series, but rather in the FP (forced-air circulation with programme functions) and M (forced-air circulation with extensive programme functions) series within the same BINDER range. For a smaller budget with a reduced temperature range up to 250 °C, the ED-S 56 is available within the Solid.Line range; this also features natural convection but comes with a simpler timer controller instead of the ED 56’s LCD display. BINDER also uses the designation ‘Classic’ for certain smaller models.Line; as the current master data does not provide a consistent record of which LT items belong to this third line, no specific classification is claimed here. An overview of the entire BINDER range at LT Laborhandel is provided in the ‘Climate Chambers & Incubators’ category.
Application, Operation and Maintenance
Without active air circulation, heating up to 150 °C takes around 50 minutes; after opening the door, the set temperature is reached again after approximately 19 minutes. Anyone using the cabinet for longer, unattended drying or heat treatment cycles can factor these times into their process planning. The spatial temperature deviation is 2.3 ± K, and the temporal deviation is 0.4 ± K. Process data can be downloaded via the USB port for documentation purposes, such as for batch records in quality assurance.
Practical note: Standard, non-abrasive laboratory cleaning agents are suitable for cleaning the interior; we advise against using abrasive or chlorine-based products. The built-in Class 2 temperature selector limiter in accordance with DIN 12880, with a visual alarm, provides additional protection against accidental overheating during unattended runs. Calibration is recommended for regular checks of temperature accuracy; LT Laborhandel can arrange suitable calibration certificates via its procurement service.
Investment rationale: When natural convection is sufficient, and when forced air or programme functions are advisable
For samples where air movement inside the chamber is to be avoided, or where a documented process record via USB is required, the ED 56 is the right choice. If, on the other hand, the main priority is short cycle times and rapid, uniform drying of larger quantities, the forced-air circulation of the FD 56 comes into its own. If multi-stage temperature profiles need to run automatically, it is worth looking at the FP or M series with programme functions. If, on the other hand, a temperature range up to 250 °C and a simpler timer controller are sufficient, the Solid.Line with the ED-S 56 is the more economical option.
The ED 56 comes as standard with two chrome-plated shelf grids. For higher loading densities, additional shelf grids are available as accessories, as are calibration certificates and maintenance contracts of varying scope – both available via LT Laborhandel’s procurement service.
Frequently asked questions about the Binder ED 56
What is the internal capacity of the ED 56?
57 litres, with external dimensions of 560 x 565 x 625 mm.
What is the difference between the ED 56 and the FD 56?
The ED 56 operates using natural convection without a fan, whilst the FD 56 uses forced air circulation. As a result, the FD 56 heats up significantly faster (around 15 minutes instead of 50 to reach 150 °C), whereas the ED 56 avoids air movement inside the chamber.
What distinguishes the ED 56 from the larger ED 260?
With a capacity of 255 litres, the ED 260 offers around four times the usable volume, with a correspondingly larger footprint; the operating principle is identical.
What is the USB data logging function used for?
The USB port allows process data from the drying or heat treatment cycle to be read out and documented, for example for batch records.
Is the ED 56 also available with a 120 V connection?
Yes, in addition to the 230 V version, the unit is also available as a 120 V variant.
How do I clean the interior?
Standard laboratory cleaners without abrasive properties are the right choice. Abrasive or chlorine-based agents must not be used inside the chamber (practical note).
What is included in the scope of delivery?
The ED 56 (9010-0333), two chrome-plated insert grids and the user manual.
