Binder ED-S 56 Drying and Heating Cabinet with Natural Convection, 62 L, up to 250 Degrees Celsius, 9090-0014

Product information "Binder ED-S 56 Drying and Heating Cabinet with Natural Convection, 62 L, up to 250 Degrees Celsius, 9090-0014"

The Binder ED-S 56 is a drying and heating cabinet housed in a compact Solid.Line casing, which is identical in construction to the BD-S 056 and FD-S 056 models from the BINDER range. Contrary to what the name ‘ED-S’ might suggest, this is not a conventional incubator, but rather a unit designed for drying and heat treatment tasks: With a temperature range from 7 °C above room temperature up to 250 °C, the ED-S 56 covers a significantly wider range than would be required for incubation tasks alone. The usable volume is 62 l.

Natural convection for gentle heating

The ED-S 56 operates using natural convection rather than active forced air circulation. Heat is distributed via the heated chamber walls without a fan actively circulating the air inside the chamber. This is a suitable operating principle for drying tasks where gentler, less turbulent air movement is desired, such as when drying laboratory glassware or sample material without active turbulence. The ED-S 56 shares its compact Solid.Line housing with the structurally identical models BD-S 056 and FD-S 056, but differs from them in its significantly extended temperature range up to 250 °C.

High temperature range for drying and heat treatment tasks

With a temperature range up to 250 °C, the ED-S 56 extends well beyond the range of conventional incubators, which typically stop at around 70 to 100 °C. This makes the unit suitable for applications involving genuine drying, heat treatment or sterilisation processes at higher temperatures, rather than the incubation of living cultures. With external dimensions of 614 x 577 x 625 mm (W x D x H) and a weight of 36 kg, the ED-S 56 remains a compact benchtop unit. The connected load is 1.05 kW.

Typical applications

  • Drying of laboratory glassware and sample material
  • Heat treatment of material samples
  • Sterilisation processes at higher temperatures
  • Compact drying tasks in laboratories with limited space

Individual requirements and procurement service

Through our procurement service, LT Laborhandel assists with the procurement of suitable accessories, spare parts, bespoke calibration or special configurations for the ED-S 56. Do you need help selecting the right unit for your application? We’re happy to help via our procurement service.

Selection guide within the range

Within the ED-S designation, BINDER currently offers only one size: the ED-S 56 described here, with a 62-litre usable volume. If you require a larger or smaller volume, the suitable alternative is not to be found in a larger ED-S model, but in one of the other Solid.Line product families featuring a comparable, compact housing design.

FD-S 115 (9090-0024)Convection106 l764 x 616 x 735 mm

For those requiring greater capacity where forced air circulation is not a deal-breaker, the FD-S 115 is the largest Solid.Line model available. If natural convection remains a requirement, the ED-S 56 is currently the only Solid.Line option from LT Laborhandel in this market segment. For larger internal volumes with natural convection, the only option in this case is to switch to the Avantgarde.Line ED series, which offers a significantly wider range with six sizes from 20 to 743 l.

Distinction from the Avantgarde.Line and the FD-S 56 forced-air model

The ED-S 56 belongs to the Solid.Line range, which reliably covers the basic functions but does not include the LCD control panel or the higher temperature range found in the Avantgarde.Line. The Avantgarde.Line counterpart with natural convection is the ED 56, which has a 57-litre usable volume, a temperature range up to 300 °C instead of 250 °C, and an LCD controller with USB data logging.

Within the Solid.Line range itself, the FD-S 56 is the forced-air counterpart to the ED-S 56: it features an identical housing design but with an active fan for faster, more uniform heating. The ‘Climate Chambers & Incubators’ category provides an overview of the entire Binder range available from LT Laborhandel.

Application, operation and maintenance

Without active air circulation, heating up typically takes longer than with the structurally identical FD-S 56 with forced air circulation, for which a heating time of around 15 minutes to 150 °C is documented. We can provide a corresponding figure for the ED-S 56 on request. For processes where steady, low-airflow heating is more important than short cycle times, such as with dust-sensitive samples or sample material stored in the open, this is of secondary importance anyway. The connected load of 1.05 kW is on a par with comparable compact drying and heating cabinets with natural convection in this size range.

Practical note: Standard, non-abrasive laboratory cleaners are suitable for cleaning the interior; we advise against using abrasive or chlorine-based products. Calibration is recommended for regular checks of temperature accuracy; LT Laborhandel can arrange suitable calibration certificates via its procurement service. We will provide the class of the adjustable temperature limiter on request.

Investment rationale: When Solid.Line is sufficient, and when Avantgarde.Line or forced-air systems are worthwhile

If a temperature range up to 250 °C with natural convection is sufficient for drying, heat treatment or sterilisation processes, the ED-S 56 meets this requirement without the need for an LCD control panel or USB data logging. If a higher temperature range up to 300 °C or documented process recording is required, the ED 56 from the Avantgarde.Line is the more suitable choice. If, on the other hand, rapid, uniform heating is the main priority and air movement inside the chamber is not critical, the FD-S 56 with forced air circulation is a better fit.

For additional accessories, spare parts, custom calibration or special configurations relating to the ED-S 56, LT Laborhandel’s procurement service is available; it is also worth making an enquiry to confirm the compatibility of insert grids with the identically constructed Solid.Line housing. Anyone unsure whether the ED-S 56 or one of the higher-capacity Avantgarde.Line models is the more cost-effective choice can also seek this assessment via the procurement service, rather than deciding based solely on the data sheet specifications.

Frequently asked questions about the Binder ED-S 56

What is the usable volume of the ED-S 56?
62 l, with external dimensions of 614 x 577 x 625 mm.

Is the ED-S 56 also available in a larger size?
No, BINDER currently only offers the ED-S model in this one size. For greater capacity with natural convection, you will need to switch to the Avantgarde.Line ED series.

What distinguishes the ED-S 56 from the ED 56 in the Avantgarde.Line range?
The ED-S 56 covers a temperature range up to 250 °C, whilst the ED 56 covers a range up to 300 °C and also features an LCD controller with USB data logging.

What distinguishes the ED-S 56 from the FD-S 56?
Both share the Solid.Line housing, but the FD-S 56 operates with forced air circulation, whilst the ED-S 56 uses natural convection without an active fan.

Is the ED-S 56 suitable for sterilisation tasks?
The temperature range up to 250 °C is significantly higher than that of conventional incubators, which typically top out at around 70 to 100 °C, and is therefore also suitable for sterilisation processes at higher temperatures.

How do I clean the interior?
Wipe the interior with a standard, non-abrasive laboratory cleaner. Abrasive cleaners and chlorine-based cleaners are not suitable (practical note).

What is included in the scope of delivery?
The ED-S 56 (9090-0014) and the user manual.

Is the ED-S 56 more suitable for a laboratory or for industrial use?
The compact Solid.Line housing and the temperature range up to 250 °C make the ED-S 56 suitable for laboratories and quality assurance, as well as for simple industrial drying and heat treatment tasks where space is limited.
