Product information "Binder KBF PRO 260 Constant-Climate Chamber, −20 °C to +100 °C, 10 % to 98 % relative humidity, 262 l, 9020-0440"
Positioned between a compact benchtop chamber and a large-format climatic chamber, the Binder KBF PRO 260 is a versatile all-rounder for material testing under extended temperature and humidity conditions. With a usable volume of 262 litres and a control range from −20 °C to +100 °C, it covers both standard stability tests and more demanding stress profiles. This makes it suitable for laboratories that need to switch between pharmaceutical stability testing and technical materials testing within the same unit, without having to maintain two separate climate chambers.
The Binder KBF PRO 260 Constant Climate Chamber is part of Binder’s KBF PRO series and specialises in the combined control of temperature and relative humidity. The extended temperature range of −20 °C to +100 °C, together with humidity control from 10 °C to 90 °C at 10 % to 98 % RH, goes well beyond the standard range of the KBF series. This means that, in addition to standard ICH stability profiles, the KBF PRO 260 can also handle all kinds of material testing, for example at temperatures close to freezing point or under THB (Temperature Humidity Bias) conditions at +85 °C and 85 per cent relative humidity. Here too, the unit can be used as an ICH photostability test chamber or a plant growth chamber with optional light modules.
Control technology, humidity control and safety features
The unit is controlled via a touchscreen controller with interval and real-time programming, operated via an ergonomically adjustable control terminal. Humidity is regulated by a capacitive humidity sensor in combination with responsive steam humidification. A Class 3.3 temperature selector switch in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring visual and audible alarms, safeguards unattended test runs, whilst a signal triangle with an illuminated status indicator displays the unit’s status even from a distance. Ethernet and USB interfaces, as well as an internal data logger with an open measurement value format, enable comprehensive documentation; the APT-COM Basic Edition software is included as standard. Users wishing to integrate the analysis into an existing quality management system can, if required, supplement the software with paid editions offering extended analysis functions.
The inner chamber is made of stainless steel; the two inner doors, made of metal-oxide-coated safety glass, allow a clear view of the samples without affecting the climatic conditions. Two outer and two inner doors, each fitted with a door heater to prevent condensation, together with a robust housing construction utilising HIT sandwich technology, ensure a stable, well-insulated chamber that quickly restores its climatic conditions even following frequent door openings. Cooling is provided by a modern inverter chiller using the climate-neutral refrigerant R-290, which, according to the manufacturer’s data sheet, offers up to 40 per cent lower energy consumption compared with the previous model.
Cost-effectiveness and sustainability in continuous operation
Constant-climate cabinets generally run continuously for weeks or months, so energy consumption has a significant impact on running costs. According to the manufacturer’s data sheet, the modern inverter refrigeration technology with a climate-neutral refrigerant saves up to 40 per cent in energy compared with the previous model, without compromising on the precision of temperature and humidity control. For laboratories with several climate-controlled cabinets operating in parallel, this difference adds up significantly over the service life; furthermore, the climate-neutral refrigerant reduces the environmental impact compared to older refrigerants.
Typical applications
This medium-sized model already allows a noticeably larger sample volume to be processed in parallel, without reaching the dimensions and space requirements of the largest models in the series.
- Material testing within an extended temperature range from −20 °C to +100 °C
- THB conditions (+85 °C, 85% relative humidity) for electronics and materials reliability testing
- Combined pharmaceutical stability testing and technical material qualification in the same instrument
- Photostability tests in accordance with ICH Q1B using an optional light module
With optionally available light modules, the Binder KBF PRO 260 can be expanded to include ICH Q1B-compliant photostability tests or LED plant light modules for plant growth experiments, without the need to change the base unit. Two stainless steel insert racks are included as standard; if required, the chamber can be fitted with additional insert racks, including reinforced ones, up to the maximum number permitted. External water supply systems are also available for humidity control, whilst software documentation upgrades are available up to the GLP Edition.

Three retrofit options: LED plant light, ICH light and CO2 gassing

Pictured: KBF PRO 260 with ICH light module. The module is an accessory.
The KBF PRO 260 accepts three different modules: the LED plant light module (8012-2439), the ICH light module (8012-2441) and the CO2 gassing module (8012-2140 in the range 0 to 1 vol.%, 8012-2138 in the range 0 to 20 vol.%). In LED operation, size 260 reaches a PAR photon flux density of 1,660 µmol/m²/s at a distance of 25 cm, and the temperature and humidity range narrows to −10 °C to +60 °C and 10 to 90 per cent relative humidity. With the ICH module, VIS illuminance is 38 klx and UVA irradiance is 37 W/m², the ICH Q1B test duration is 38 hours at 10 °C to 50 °C and 10 to 80 per cent relative humidity. For fitting the LED light strips, a shelf set with U-rails is recommended (8012-2390).
The modules are accessories and not included with the chamber. You will find them with prices under "Matching modules" on this page; more on our Binder page.
