Product information "Bürkle Immersion Bottle, formerly used for liquid sampling, brass, 1,000 ml, 5365-3000"
Anyone who draws fuel, heating oil or any other petroleum product from a tank or drum is usually working in an area where no sparks must be generated. The Ex dip tube from Bürkle is made entirely from non-sparking brass and, according to Bürkle, is suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres classified as Ex protection zone 0, in explosion groups IIA, IIB and IIC.
3.3 kilograms for rapid descent
Weighing 3.3 kilograms, the submersible cylinder sinks rapidly through the product column, rather than floating on the surface or tipping over whilst being lowered. The collection tank has a capacity of 1,000 millilitres and an external diameter of 89 millimetres; the total height is 443 millimetres, of which 333 millimetres is accounted for by the tank itself. The bracket at the top serves both as a carrying handle and as an attachment point for the lowering line, which allows the cylinder to be lowered into the tank from an access hatch or a dome cover.
Non-sparking brass, nickel-plated
Made entirely of brass and nickel-plated, the immersion bottle is one of the non-sparking tools required for work on fuel and oil tanks. The nickel plating provides additional protection against corrosion when the bottle is repeatedly immersed in crude oil, heating oil or lubricants, and keeps it in good visual and functional condition even with frequent use.
Removable head for changing products
The cylinder head can be unscrewed, allowing the interior to be thoroughly cleaned between two sampling operations. If samples are taken from several tanks containing different products in a single day – for example, first diesel fuel, then heating oil – this prevents residues from being carried over into the next sample.
Goods receipt at the tank farm
When goods are received at a tank farm or when bunkering marine fuel, the cargo is often sampled prior to acceptance in order to document quantity and quality. The Ex-rated sampling cylinder can be lowered into the tank directly from the dome cover for this inspection and provides a representative sample from the desired depth without the need to procure any special tools for the sampling process itself. The sample taken often also serves as the basis for invoicing based on the quantity and quality of the delivery.
What the explosion groups mean
Explosion groups IIA, IIB and IIC describe how easily a gas or vapour-air mixture can be ignited. IIC covers the widest range of substances; a device rated for IIC is therefore also suitable for IIA and IIB. Bürkle classifies the Ex immersion bottle as suitable for all three groups, whilst for the glass immersion bottle, only IIA and IIB are documented.
Glass, Mini or Brass: choosing the right design
Bürkle offers several designs of immersion bottles for Ex-rated areas. If the contents need to be visible whilst being drawn off – for example, with water or sludge samples – the glass immersion bottle with a clear glass container is the more suitable choice. The significantly more compact mini immersion bottle is designed for narrow openings such as curved sounding pipes or small drum lids. If a wider range of volumes is required, the brass immersion bottle is available in versions with a capacity of 500 or 1,000 millilitres. For multi-layer samples from tanks or tank wagons with flow-optimised flaps, on the other hand, the immersion vessel is the correct design.
Typical applications
- Sampling of crude oils and liquid petroleum products from tanks and drums
- Fuels, special-purpose and test petrols
- Heating oils and petroleum
- Liquid lubricants
- Incoming goods inspection at tank farms and during bunkering
- Work in areas for which Bürkle specifies explosion protection zone 0
