For some tests, a double sample from a single site is not sufficient. If a laboratory requires three independent subsamples from a single target site – for example, for testing, repeat analysis and retention – the Novartos Uno, with its triple-sample collection function, extracts all three in a single puncture from the same collection chamber, rather than puncturing three times at slightly different sites.
Three samples from a single point
The lance has a single collection chamber, which is fitted with three sample inserts (sold separately). Upon insertion, all three fill simultaneously at the same point in the bulk material, without the need for a second puncture to obtain the third sample. After withdrawal, the three filled inserts are removed and separated for their respective further use.
Use in cases of increased testing requirements
Typically, the samples are divided into one for the current test, one for a possible repeat test, and one as a retained sample in accordance with standard GMP guidelines. All three originate from the same zone, which means that any discrepancies between the results can be clearly attributed to the test itself rather than to different sampling points. Should a result later be called into question, the third sample provides material for a confirmatory test immediately, without the need to puncture the container again.
Typical industries
The triple sampling from a single target point is used where a single test point in the container is sufficient, but the quality system requires more than two samples, for example in pharmaceutical incoming goods inspection or for chemical raw materials with strict release criteria. An inspector who needs to approve a newly delivered drum can take all three required sub-samples with a single puncture, thereby saving two further punctures at the same point.
Three lengths for different container heights
The Novartos Uno 3-way is available with penetration depths of 600, 1,000 and 1,400 millimetres; depending on the model, the total length is 800, 1,200 or 1,600 millimetres, identical to the 2-way version of the same series. For all three lengths, the collection chamber begins 52 millimetres from the tip of the lance.
Material for the pharmaceutical sector
Manufactured from V4A (1.4404) stainless steel with components made from 1.4571, tube diameter 25 millimetres, chamber length 45 millimetres. Both steels are corrosion-resistant and designed for regular cleaning between batches.
Why the chamber position matters
The collection chamber begins only 52 millimetres behind the lance tip. The top 52 millimetres of the container are therefore not covered by the sample, which must be taken into account when comparing samples from other samplers or from previous batches. The chamber length of 45 millimetres also determines the layer height from which all three sub-samples are taken.
Replacement tip and sampling inserts
A replacement tip made of V4A is available as a separate spare part for the Novartos Uno series. The corresponding sample inserts are available in six volumes ranging from 0 to 4 millilitres and are inserted individually into the collection chamber depending on the test task; in the 3-channel version, three inserts are used per puncture instead of two.
Choice within the Novartos series
If two samples from the target site are sufficient, the Novartos Uno with a 2-position sample extractor is the more compact option, with one fewer sample per chamber. If the entire penetration depth is to be tested in several zones rather than at a single point, the Novartos Multi with a 2-position sample extractor is suitable; alternatively, the Novartos Multi with a 3-position sample extractor, which accommodates three samples per zone, is also available.
