Bürkle Stainless Steel Safety Container, UN-approved, 25 l, 2601-5125

Product information "Bürkle Stainless Steel Safety Container, UN-approved, 25 l, 2601-5125"

If flammable liquids need to be transported between sites, a standard safety container is not sufficient for storage; dangerous goods regulations require officially approved packaging. The UN-approved stainless steel safety container is type-tested specifically for this purpose and marked with its own UN approval number. A standard storage container without this approval must not be used for such transport, even if it appears structurally similar.

UN packaging code 1A1/X1.6/400

The container bears the UN packaging code 1A1/X1.6/400 and, according to the manufacturer’s specifications, is approved for transport in accordance with GGVSEB, GGVSee, ADR, RID, the IMDG Code and ICAO-TI. This marking is a prerequisite for the transport of flammable liquids in this container on public roads, by rail, sea or air. A container that has not undergone this test must not be used for this purpose.

1.2-millimetre wall thickness and stackable design

At 1.2 millimetres thick, the wall is slightly thinner than that of the 50-litre storage version of the same series, but this is sufficient for transport purposes. The container is stackable, which saves space in storage and when transporting several containers on a pallet, for example when consolidating multiple consignments prior to joint dispatch.

Why the UN test matters

UN certification confirms that the container’s design has passed specific drop, stacking and leak-tightness tests within the relevant packaging group before it is approved for the transport of dangerous goods. Without this certification, a haulier may not accept a flammable liquid in this container. The UN approval number is affixed to the container itself and is cross-checked against the transport document during a loading inspection.

Reading the packaging group and leak-tightness class

The UN packaging code 1A1/X1.6/400 can be read digit by digit: 1A1 stands for a metal drum with a non-removable lid; X indicates approval for all three packaging groups I to III; 1.6 specifies the relative density up to which the container has been tested; and 400 indicates the test pressure in kilopascals. In day-to-day practice, it is usually sufficient to check the code on the delivery note against the specifications in your own hazardous substances register, without having to look up each digit individually.

25 l, made of 1.4301 stainless steel

With a capacity of 25 l, an external diameter of 300 mm and a height of 530 mm, the container falls between the 10-litre and 50-litre versions of the same series. The material is 1.4301 (V2A) stainless steel, and the closure is a screw cap with a G 1 1/2-inch external thread. Weighing 6.401 kilograms when empty, the container can be moved by a single person provided it is not completely full.

Alternative designs for transport and storage

If the cargo is a canister rather than a container, the Bürkle stainless steel safety canister with UN approval offers the same transport approval in a more compact form. If a simpler design is sufficient for storage purposes only without transport approval, the 50-litre variants of the Bürkle stainless steel safety container with tap or the Bürkle stainless steel safety container with pressure relief valve are the more cost-effective choice. The Bürkle stainless steel safety funnel assists with filling.

Typical applications

  • Transport of flammable liquids between locations by road, rail or sea
  • Dispatch of samples or solvents for which proof of an official dangerous goods licence is required
  • Space-saving storage of multiple containers thanks to the stackable design
  • Replacement of containers without transport approval, where required by dangerous goods regulations
  • Loading checks, during which the UN approval number on the container is cross-checked against the transport document

Service and procurement

As the transport of dangerous goods often requires additional accessories, such as a funnel, in addition to the approved container, LT Laborhandel tailors the order accordingly. If several containers are transported on a regular basis, the order can be arranged straight away to include the appropriate quantity and pallet size. LT Laborhandel provides personalised advice on the correct transport approval or the appropriate size.
