Product information "Giese-GEF Hazard Label Class 2.3 (Toxic Gases), 100 x 100 mm, Self-Adhesive Film, Roll of 1,000"
The Class 2.3 hazard label warns of toxic gases. It features a black skull and crossbones on a white background, with the number 2 in the bottom corner. The roll from Giese-GEF (Offenbach am Main) contains 1,000 labels measuring 100 x 100 mm; the material is self-adhesive film in accordance with BS 5609.
Applications
The label goes on packages and gas cylinders containing toxic gases of Class 2. It is rarely used on its own. According to the dangerous goods list, ammonia, anhydrous, liquefied under pressure (UN 1005) bears 2.3 together with 8, and chlorine, liquefied under pressure (UN 1017) bears 2.3, 5.1 and 8. The templates for oxidising and corrosive substances are available as hazard label 5.1 and hazard label 8.
Gas cylinders are subject to specific dimensions in accordance with ISO 7225:2005 in the area of the cylinder shoulder (ADR 5.2.2.2.1.2). Whether the roll label fits there must be checked on the container. Large labels of at least 250 x 250 mm are required on containers and vehicles. The consignor decides which labels a consignment requires in total.
Design of the hazard label
The symbol and number are black, with a white background. The number 2 at the bottom refers to the class of gases. The design is strikingly similar to hazard label 6.1 for toxic substances; the only difference lies in this number, 2 instead of 6. Hazard labels must be affixed to a contrasting background or be surrounded by an outer border.
Material and finish
Self-adhesive film, specified by the manufacturer as seawater-resistant in accordance with BS 5609. The ADR requires weather resistance but does not specify either a test method or a minimum duration. For maritime transport, the IMDG Code requires legibility after three months in seawater. The roll contains 1,000 labels.

Frequently asked questions
How does Class 2.3 differ from Class 6.1? There is no difference in the symbols or colours. Only the number in the bottom corner is different: 2 for toxic gases, 6 for toxic substances.
Does a consignment containing toxic gas need to carry several labels? Often, yes. Several hazard labels must be placed close together on the same surface and must not obscure one another (ADR 5.2.2.1.6). For chlorine, the dangerous goods list specifies three different designs.
Are there labels for other types of gas? Flammable gases have the red hazard label 2.1, whilst non-flammable and non-toxic gases have the green hazard label 2.2.
