For those looking for a hotplate with a magnetic stirrer but who can do without a display and sensor programming, the Hei-PLATE Mix’n’Heat Core is the entry-level model in the Hei-PLATE range. Two rotary knobs allow the speed and temperature to be set directly via a scale, without the need to navigate through menus. The 145-millimetre-diameter Kera-Disk work surface, made of anodised aluminium, heats up to 300 degrees Celsius whilst stirring at up to 1,400 revolutions per minute.

Two rotary knobs instead of a display

The controls are deliberately analogue: one rotary knob sets the speed between 100 and 1,400 revolutions per minute, whilst the second sets the temperature between 20 and 300 degrees Celsius, both via a scale on the unit. The heating function can be activated independently of the stirring function; an illuminated LED button indicates whether heating is in progress. Those who do not require the sensor technology and memory functions of the Core+ series will achieve results more quickly with this simplified control concept and avoid having to familiarise themselves with a menu.

PID-controlled heating with safety margin

The heating power is 800 watts at 230 volts (EU) or 600 watts at 115 volts (US), controlled via PID. There is a generous safety gap between the heating plate and the control panel; a visual residual heat warning lights up on the base when the surface temperature exceeds 50 degrees Celsius. The patented Kera-Disk coating, made from anodised aluminium, is chemical-resistant and scratch-resistant and, according to the manufacturer, enables short heating times despite the compact design.

Load capacity and space requirements

With a net weight of around 3 kilograms, the base can support set-ups weighing up to 25 kilograms, which also accommodates larger flasks or filled baths. IP42 protection rating protects against foreign bodies larger than 1 mm and dripping water when tilted up to 15°; the sound pressure level is below 50 dB(A). With external dimensions of 168 x 101 x 299 millimetres, the unit remains compact on the workbench, although the base, with a diameter of 145 millimetres, offers space for many standard flask sizes and accessories.

Selection guide: Core, Core+ or the sensor pack

If you wish to measure the sample temperature yourself rather than simply controlling the hotplate, you will need an external Pt1000 probe and therefore the digital Hei-PLATE Mix’n’Heat Core+ with LCD display. If you wish to purchase the Core equipped directly with a probe and silicone cover, you’ll find the right combination in the Hei-PLATE Sensor Advanced Package Core. If a simple magnetic stirrer without a heating function is sufficient, the more compact Hei-Mix S is the simpler alternative for smaller stirring volumes.
