Product information "IKA C-MAG HP 4 Hotplate, Ceramic Support Surface 100 x 100 mm, 250 Watt, 0003581600"
For a single flask, a small Petri dish or occasional heating without much space requirement, a full-sized hotplate is often not worthwhile. The IKA C-MAG HP 4 (0003581600) is the most compact pure hotplate of the C-MAG family, with a ceramic support surface of just 100 x 100 millimetres, 250 watts of heating power and a weight of only 2.44 kilograms.
Compact ceramic support surface for small vessels
The ceramic support surface of 100 x 100 millimetres is deliberately designed for smaller vessels and volumes of up to 5 litres of water and covers a heating temperature range of 50 to 500 degrees Celsius, set via a simple rotary knob with a setting accuracy of 5 kelvin, without the additional display and control functions of the larger HS models. With 250 watts of heating power, the heating rate is 2.5 kelvin per minute, lower than with the larger C-MAG HP models, but sufficient for smaller batches and spot heating.
Lightweight for mobile use
With dimensions of 150 x 105 x 260 millimetres and a weight of only 2.44 kilograms, the HP 4 can easily be moved between workstations or accommodated in small fume cupboards where there is no room for larger hotplates. The protection class IP 21 protects against vertically falling drops of water.
No option for external temperature measurement
Unlike the larger C-MAG HP and HS models, the HP 4 has no connection for an external contact thermometer according to the technical data table. Temperature control takes place exclusively via the plate surface, a deliberate omission in favour of the compact, simple design. For applications in which the exact temperature in the medium itself must be documented, this is a relevant exclusion criterion that should be checked before purchase.
Economical entry into the C-MAG series
With 250 watts of heating power, the HP 4 is well below the 1000 watts of the C-MAG HP 7 and HS models, and the purchase price and the running power consumption in continuous operation across several workstations are correspondingly lower. For laboratories that have to equip several workstations with simple heating tasks without every position needing high heating power or a sensor socket, the HP 4 allows a larger number of positions to be equipped at reasonable cost.
Typical applications
As the most compact and lightest hotplate of the C-MAG family, the HP 4 is technically suited above all to small-volume, non-critical heating tasks:
- Heating individual small vessels up to 5 litres volume
- Workstations with limited space, for example in small fume cupboards
- Simple heat source in training and routine laboratories without any requirement for medium temperature measurement
- Second device for spot heating tasks alongside a larger main device
- Mobile use thanks to a low weight of 2.44 kilograms
Selection guide: HP 4 compared with larger C-MAG hotplates
Within the C-MAG HP series, the HP 4 marks the entry point, with clear differences in surface area, power and sensor connection:
| Model | Plate size | Volume (H2O) | Heating power | External sensor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C-MAG HP 4 (this device) | 100 x 100 mm | 5 l | 250 W | not provided |
| C-MAG HP 7 | 180 x 180 mm | 10 l | 1000 W | ETS-D5 (DIN 12878) |
Anyone who wants to heat larger vessels or use external temperature measurement in the medium is better served by the C-MAG HP 7. For small, non-critical heating tasks with limited space, the HP 4 remains the more compact and more economical choice, especially if several workstations are to be equipped in parallel with simple heating tasks without every position needing a connection to an external contact thermometer.
Differentiation from the larger HP 7 and from heating magnetic stirrers
The IKA C-MAG HP 7 offers, with 1000 watts of heating power, a larger surface and a connection for an external contact thermometer, considerably more reserves for larger volumes. If stirring is required in addition to heating, the IKA C-MAG HS 7 or, for very small volumes, the mini magnetic stirrer topolino are the more suitable devices, although the latter has no heating function.

Scope of delivery
- 1 x IKA C-MAG HP 4 hotplate (0003581600)
Stirring bars are not included, as the C-MAG HP 4 has no stirring function. A connection for an external contact thermometer is not provided on this model.
Application, installation, maintenance and disposal
With protection class IP 21, the C-MAG HP 4 is protected against vertically falling drops of water and is designed for operation in a fume cupboard or on a stable laboratory bench at up to 80 per cent relative humidity. Because of its compact design and low weight, the plate is also suitable for mobile use between several workstations or for transport between different rooms and floors, but it should be cooled down and disconnected from the mains before being moved. The ceramic surface is chemical-resistant, but should be allowed to cool and be disconnected from the mains before cleaning. At the end of its service life, the hotplate, as an electrical device, does not belong in household waste but in the separate collection of waste electrical equipment; the manufacturer's WEEE registration number is DE 66784213.
Investment logic: when the compact HP 4 is sufficient
For small vessels up to 5 litres, spot heating without any requirement for a temperature measured in the medium, and cramped space conditions, the HP 4 is the most economical solution within the C-MAG family and covers a large part of simple laboratory routines without power reserves remaining unused. As soon as larger volumes, more heating power or external temperature measurement are needed, there is no way around the C-MAG HP 7 or an HS model with stirring function, and the additional cost is then covered by the additional range of functions. For training laboratories with many parallel but non-critical workstations, purchasing several HP 4 units can make more sense than a few larger hotplates.
Individual requirements & procurement service
Suitable original accessories such as fixing elements and holders are available for the C-MAG HP 4 if required, as are certificates and attestations for qualification documentation according to IQ/OQ, for example for regulated quality control environments. Through our procurement service, we also support you with spare parts, calibrations and the configuration of several workstations with uniform accessories. Frequently asked questions
What vessel sizes is the 100 x 100 millimetre plate designed for?
The surface is designed for smaller standard vessels such as Erlenmeyer flasks, beakers or Petri dishes up to a volume of 5 litres and thus offers sufficient support area for most routine small-scale batches.
Can the C-MAG HP 4 also stir?
No, the HP 4 is a pure hotplate without a magnetic stirring drive. For stirring and heating in one device, IKA offers the C-MAG HS series.
Can an external temperature sensor be connected?
No, according to the technical data table, the HP 4 has no connection for an external contact thermometer, unlike the larger HP 7.
What is the maximum volume that can be heated?
According to the manufacturer, up to 5 litres of water.
How quickly does the plate heat up?
According to the data sheet, the heating rate is 2.5 kelvin per minute, which is about half as fast as the more powerful C-MAG HP 7 at 5 kelvin per minute, but usually quick enough for small volumes.
Which voltage variants are available?
In addition to the standard 230 volt version, further voltage variants with 120 volts and 100 volts are available according to the data sheet, each at a mains frequency of 50 or 60 hertz.
Is the HP 4 suitable for mobile use between workstations?
With a weight of 2.44 kilograms and compact dimensions, the HP 4 can be moved comparatively easily.
How is the C-MAG HP 4 disposed of properly?
As an electrical device, it belongs at a waste electrical equipment collection point instead of in household waste. The manufacturer's WEEE registration number is given in the section Application, installation, maintenance and disposal.
