IKA C-MAG HS 7 Magnetic Stirrer with Heating, Ceramic Work Surface 180 x 180 mm, 10 Litre, 0003581200

Product information "IKA C-MAG HS 7 Magnetic Stirrer with Heating, Ceramic Work Surface 180 x 180 mm, 10 Litre, 0003581200"

For the daily preparation of buffers, the heating of smaller volumes or simple reflux experiments, a laboratory does not need a full-featured device, but a stirring and heating device that runs reliably and can be operated after a brief introduction. The IKA C-MAG HS 7 (0003581200) combines a 1000-watt ceramic heating plate with a magnetic stirrer for up to 10 litres of water and thus covers a large part of routine laboratory work, without having to pay for the additional functions of a control version.

Ceramic work surface for fast, direct heat transfer

The 180 x 180 millimetre ceramic work surface transfers the heating power of 1000 watts directly to the vessel and covers a heating temperature range of 50 to 500 degrees Celsius, set via a simple rotary knob with a setting accuracy of 5 kelvin. A fixed safety circuit switches off the heating at a plate temperature of 550 degrees Celsius regardless of the selected setpoint temperature, an additional mechanical protection against overheating of the device itself. The setpoint temperature is shown on an LED display, so that the current setting remains legible even from some distance.

Stirring up to 10 litres with continuously adjustable speed

The stirring drive covers a speed range of 100 to 1500 revolutions per minute, set via a six-step scale. Stirring bars up to 80 millimetres in length can be used, and the maximum stirring capacity is 10 litres of water. Stirring and heating functions are operated via two separate controls and work independently of each other, so the device can also be used for stirring only, without heating. With a permissible load of 15 kilograms, the work surface also supports larger vessels together with accessories such as reflux condensers or stand material.

Expandable with external temperature measurement in the medium

Via the connection socket for external temperature sensors according to DIN 12878, a contact thermometer such as the IKA ETS-D5 can be retrofitted if required, in order to measure the temperature directly in the medium instead of only at the plate surface. The sensor is not included in the scope of delivery of the C-MAG HS 7 itself; anyone who needs it from the start will find a version in the C-MAG HS 7 Package that already includes ETS-D5 and stand accessories.

Typical applications

As a robust entry-level device for stirring and heating, the C-MAG HS 7 is technically suited for:

  • Preparing and homogenising buffer and reagent solutions up to 10 litres
  • Heating and stirring in sample preparation in routine laboratories
  • Simple reflux experiments and dissolution experiments in training and further education
  • Quality control with recurring, uncritical temperature profiles
  • Second device for workstations where no documented medium temperature is required

Selection guide within the C-MAG series

IKA grades the C-MAG family by the combination of stirring and heating (HS) or heating only (HP), by plate size 4, 7 or 10, and by the level of equipment from the analogue scale to the control version with interfaces. The following table places the C-MAG HS 7 in relation to its closest siblings:

ModelStirringStirring capacity (H2O)Heating powerOperation
C-MAG HS 7 (this device)yes, 100 to 1500 rpm10 l1000 WAnalogue scale, LED setpoint temperature
C-MAG HS 7 controlyes, 50 to 1500 rpm20 l1000 WLCD, PT1000/ETS-D5/ETS-D6, RS232, USB

C-MAG HP 7no, heating plate only10 l1000 WAnalogue scale, LED setpoint temperature

Anyone who regularly exceeds 10 litres or switches more often between different volumes is better served by the C-MAG HS 10 or the control version. If only heating is required and stirring is already done elsewhere, the pure heating plate C-MAG HP 7 saves purchase costs.

Differences from the nearest C-MAG models

The IKA C-MAG HS 7 control offers the same heating power, but a larger stirring capacity of 20 litres, a digital LCD display, automatic reversal of the direction of rotation, timer and interfaces for RS232 and USB, ideal when processes are to be documented or controlled via Labworldsoft. The IKA C-MAG HS 10 retains the simple analogue operation of the HS 7, but brings a larger 260 x 260 millimetre plate and 1500 watts of heating power for larger batches. Anyone who needs the ETS-D5 sensor, stand material and stirring bars directly in a set will find this in the IKA C-MAG HS 7 Package. For smaller batches of up to 5 litres, the IKA C-MAG HS 4 is additionally available in the series.

Use, installation, maintenance and disposal

With degree of protection IP 21, the C-MAG HS 7 is protected against vertically falling drip water and designed for operation under the fume hood or on a level, stable laboratory bench at up to 80 percent relative humidity. The ceramic surface is chemical-resistant, but should cool before cleaning, since the self-heating of the work surface rises by up to 2 kelvin when stirring for an hour at room temperature and acts in addition to the set heating temperature. The fixed safety circuit at 550 degrees Celsius protects against unintentional overheating, but does not replace the usual visual inspection of the mains cable and housing before each use. At the end of its service life, the device does not belong in household waste as electrical equipment but in separate waste electrical equipment collection; the manufacturer's WEEE registration number is DE 66784213.

Investment logic: stirring capacity, vessel size and when more equipment pays off

For most routine batches between 250 millilitres and a few litres, the combination of 10 litres stirring capacity and 1000 watts of heating power of the C-MAG HS 7 is comfortably sufficient, as long as the setpoint temperature at the plate surface is adequate for the application. As soon as a process needs a reliable temperature measured in the medium itself, for example with defined reaction endpoints or sensitive batches, the investment in an external temperature sensor via the ETS-D5 socket is worthwhile, or switching straight to the control version with documentable control. Anyone who regularly works beyond 10 litres should weigh the additional cost of the C-MAG HS 10 or the C-MAG HS 7 control against the effort of constantly working at the capacity limit.

The new IKA ETS-D5 electronic contact thermometer (MPN 0025008371) completely redefines precision, safety and ease of use in laboratory thermal analysis. Developed as a high-performance mechatronic control unit for demanding laboratory processes, this instrument takes over active, direct temperature control of the medium once connected. It controls the heating power of a coupled magnetic stirrer by intelligently switching the heating plate on and off, whilst the stirrer itself acts as a redundant monitoring unit for the preset safety limits. The ETS-D5 thus transforms any compatible workstation into a future-proof, high-precision control centre for reproducible experimental series. Integrated safety architecture for risk-free processes From a process engineering perspective, the ETS-D5 offers a comprehensive range of sophisticated protective functions that contribute significantly to laboratory safety and risk minimisation. The system features an adjustable sensor timeout, which is triggered immediately if the probe is inadvertently outside the liquid medium. Precise temperature drop detection reacts dynamically to unexpected thermal gradients, whilst setpoint monitoring (Delta T) immediately stops temperature control if the target value is exceeded by a critical margin. To prevent operator errors in multi-user operation, the maximum settable temperature can be strictly limited via a setpoint limit. In the event of a transient fault, the heating circuit remains permanently switched off to protect personnel and the sample matrix. Optimised PID control and application-specific modes The instrument’s control technology ensures absolutely stable temperature control without thermal overshoot. Coupled with a high-precision, interchangeable PT1000 temperature sensor of tolerance class A, the system covers a wide operating range from –20 °C to +400 °C. Three application-specific temperature control modes ensure maximum flexibility in day-to-day laboratory work: ‘Fast’ for ultra-fast heating cycles, ‘Precise’ for working at the minimum tolerance limit, and a specialised synthesis block mode that is perfectly tailored to the thermodynamic requirements of chemical syntheses. For highly sensitive organic or biological sample structures, the heating rate can also be precisely reduced in percentage increments. Ergonomic touch-screen control concept and documentation The instrument’s exterior breaks away from complicated analogue designs and features a user-friendly, clear touchscreen display for intuitive parameter configuration during continuous operation. The almost completely enclosed system reliably protects the internal electronic components from aggressive vapours and liquids in the harsh everyday laboratory environment. A future-proof, integrated USB-C interface also enables the rapid, error-free export of all transient measurement data to a PC, thereby ensuring seamless documentation, validation and traceability of your processes in accordance with modern GLP standards.
