The IKA ROTATEMP SBS me-vi Package (MPN 0010013993) is the specialised turnkey solution for industrial laboratory environments where not only precision but also extreme mechanical resilience is essential. SBS technology: Steel Ball Bearing

At the heart of the measuring head (ROTAVISC SBS me-vi) is the special bearing system for the rotating shaft. The abbreviation ‘SBS’ stands for Steel Ball Bearing. Why is this important?

  • Mechanical robustness: Conventional viscometers often use a sapphire bearing (“jewel bearing”). This is extremely low-friction but sensitive to impacts (e.g. when attaching the spindle) or lateral forces. The SBS bearing, on the other hand, copes much better with rougher handling in the demanding day-to-day laboratory environment.
  • Durability: Particularly in industrial laboratories, where many different users work with the instrument, SBS technology minimises downtime caused by bearing damage.
  • Applications: This technology is ideally suited to measurements of very high viscosities or ‘difficult’ samples where high torques occur.

To make substances such as bitumen or hot-melt adhesives measurable, they must be liquefied with precision. The ROTATEMP high-temperature oven included in the set performs this task with flying colours. It heats the sample chamber quickly and in a controlled manner up to 300 °C. The intelligent control technology offers decisive advantages:

  • No overshoot: The oven reaches the target temperature precisely without briefly exceeding it. This protects your sample from thermal degradation.
  • Speed: The maximum temperature is reached in just approx. 16 minutes (depending on the medium).
  • Safety: The housing is insulated so that the heat stays where it belongs – in the sample chamber.

The ‘me-vi’ (Medium Viscosity) measurement range

Despite its robust construction, the ROTAVISC SBS me-vi offers an impressive measurement range. It covers the medium viscosity range from 100 to 40,000,000 mPas. The large 4.3" TFT display clearly shows all parameters (viscosity, temperature, torque, time). A digital spirit level helps you to align the instrument correctly, which is essential for reliable measurements.

Documentation and automation

In the quality control of building materials or polymers, data traceability is often a regulatory requirement. The system is equipped with USB and RS-232 interfaces. Connect the instrument to a PC and use the optional labworldsoft software ® to:

  • Run temperature ramps fully automatically.
  • Record the flow behaviour as the temperature cools or rises.
  • Generate rheograms and save them in an audit-proof format.
