Product information "IKA RV 3 Rotary Evaporator with Dry Ice Condenser, Coated, HB eco Heating Bath, up to 300 rpm, 0010006362"
The coated version of the RV 3 with dry ice condenser differs from the uncoated version in having coated glassware, which holds the splinters together if it breaks instead of scattering them around the laboratory. The drive, condenser and operating concept correspond to the uncoated RV 3 with dry ice condenser, and only the evaporating flask, receiving flask and RV 10.40 dry ice condenser are coated. For laboratories working with corrosive, toxic or otherwise critical solvents, this is a sensible additional protection without compromises in the technology. Like the uncoated model, this version also comes with an evaporating flask of 1,000 millilitres volume and a receiving flask of 1,000 millilitres volume, both in coated design.
Coating as splinter protection
The coated glass parts stay together even if they crack or break. This reduces the risk of cuts and prevents solvent residues from escaping uncontrolled. Especially in dry ice operation, where the condenser and flasks are subjected to greater stress from temperature changes than with pure water cooling, this additional protection is a standard procurement criterion for many laboratories.
Technology and operation as with the uncoated model
The speed can be set between 20 and 300 revolutions per minute with a rotary knob, with a tolerance of ±1 rpm below and ±1 per cent above 100 rpm. The manual lift has a stroke of 150 millimetres, and a locking mechanism with a red indicator marks the unlocked position of the vapour duct tube. The flask clamp with integrated push-off device allows the evaporating flask to be changed with one hand, and internally the device works with 24-volt extra-low voltage.
Connected load and dimensions
On the mains, the device runs at 100 to 240 volts and 1400 watts device power consumption. The protection class IP 20 according to DIN EN 60529 and the permissible ambient range of 5 to 40 degrees Celsius at up to 80 per cent humidity correspond to the usual conditions in a laboratory room. With a footprint of 440 x 530 x 330 millimetres and a weight of 28.3 kilograms, the device, like its uncoated sibling model, needs a fixed, stable position.
Accessories and expansion
Like the uncoated dry ice condenser version, this device is also compatible with the entire RV 10-compatible accessory platform from IKA. A second coated set of glassware, a vacuum pump such as the VACSTAR lite or recirculating cooling can be retrofitted if the requirements in the laboratory change later. For ongoing operation with dry ice, a standard cooling medium in the condenser jacket is sufficient, and no additional power connection is needed for it.
Choice of coolant and handling in everyday use
In practice, the condenser is filled with crushed dry ice, mixed with a solvent such as isopropanol or acetone so that the cold is distributed evenly around the cooling coils. Because dry ice sublimates continuously, refilling is routine during longer distillations, as with the uncoated version. The coating of the condenser and flasks does not change this. It only provides additional protection against splinters and leaking solvent in the event of breakage. Cold-protection gloves are sensible when handling dry ice, as pure dry ice can cause frostbite on direct skin contact.
Typical applications
- Distillation of solvents where glass breakage would be particularly critical
- Laboratories with increased safety requirements for glassware
- Low-boiling solvents without a cooling water connection, as with the uncoated version
- Training laboratories in which splinter protection is part of the safety concept
Selection guide: coated or uncoated
Anyone who does not need additional splinter protection saves money with the uncoated dry ice condenser version. The following overview compares all four RV 3 versions.
| Model | Equipment | Speed range | Lift |
| RV 3 FLEX | without glassware, without condenser | 20 to 300 rpm | manual |
| RV 3 with dry ice condenser | Dry ice condenser, 620 cm² | 20 to 300 rpm | manual |
| RV 3 with dry ice condenser, coated (this product) | Dry ice condenser, coated, 620 cm² | 20 to 300 rpm | manual |
| RV 3 V Starter Solution | Vertical glassware, pump and recirculating chiller in the set | 20 to 300 rpm | manual |
For larger volumes, the RV 8 and the RV 10 offer two larger series from the same family to choose from.

Warranty and procurement service
The IKA manufacturer's warranty applies to rotary evaporators: 2 years, extended to 5 years if registered at ika.com/register within 90 days of purchase. For a second condenser and flask set in coated design or recirculating cooling as an alternative to dry ice operation, the procurement service of LT Laborhandel puts together the suitable combination, as it does for questions about spare part availability for condensers and flasks. This also applies if only a single damaged glass part has to be replaced and not the entire set.
