Product information "Aqualabo ODEON X"
Measure two parameters in a single operation without having to carry two devices: the Aqualabo ODEON X is the dual-channel version of the ODEON handheld measuring device platform and automatically detects which digital PONSEL sensor is connected to each of the two sensor ports. Like the ODEON Open One, it features a large graphic display, 8 MB of memory for more than 100,000 GLP-compliant data sets and the ODEON Viewer PC software, but also includes a second sensor channel for combined measurements, such as pH, redox and temperature together with conductivity.
Two sensor channels for combined measurements
The ODEON X can operate two digital PONSEL sensors simultaneously, each via its own 6-pin grey metal connector for Sensor 1 and Sensor 2. Both channels automatically recognise the connected sensor and carry out a self-diagnosis. A Y-cable is also available as an accessory, allowing two digital sensors to be operated via a single input, for example if both channels are already in use.
Same platform as the ODEON Open One, with one extra connection
Apart from the number of sensor inputs, the ODEON X and ODEON Open One are structurally identical according to the data sheet: a 4-inch graphic display with 240 x 320 pixels, 8 MB of memory, IP67 protection rating, powered by 4 AA batteries with optional rechargeable NiMH cells, and a weight of 400 g for the unit without the sensor and cable. The only difference lies in the connections: one connection on the Open One, two on the X.
Selection guide: sensor combination and cable length
Aqualabo offers five sensor variants for the ODEON X, either individually or as a combination set, each with a 3 m, 7 m or 15 m cable:
| Model | Measured parameters | Typical application |
| pH, redox, temperature plus conductivity, PHEHT and C4E | pH, ORP, temperature, conductivity | pH and conductivity simultaneously, e.g. feed water or process water |
| pH, temperature plus conductivity, PHT and C4E | pH, temperature, conductivity | pH and conductivity simultaneously, without the need for redox |
| Conductivity and salinity, C4E | Conductivity, salinity, TDS | Conductivity measurement, second channel free for an additional sensor |
| pH, redox and temperature, PHEHT | pH, redox/ORP, temperature | pH/redox measurement, second channel free for an additional sensor |
| pH and temperature, PHT | pH, temperature, without redox | pH-only measurement, second channel free for an additional sensor |
Two channels are worthwhile as soon as two parameters are regularly measured together, such as pH and conductivity when monitoring the inflow or drain of a sewage treatment plant. Instead of carrying two separate devices and manually combining two sets of measurements, the ODEON X provides both values in a single operation and in a single data set. In the pH/ORP/T plus conductivity and pHT plus conductivity combination sets, both channels are pre-configured at the factory; in the single-parameter sets, one channel remains free and can be fitted with an additional sensor at a later date. The same rule of thumb applies to cable length as for the Open One: 3 m for measurements taken directly at the vessel, 7 m for medium-depth tanks, and 15 m for deep tanks or shafts.
Distinctions within the Aqualabo range of portable measuring devices
Aqualabo offers its portable handheld measuring instruments in four versions: Aqualabo NEON as a single-parameter device with a hard-wired sensor, Aqualabo NEON OPEN with Open Technology for interchangeable digital sensors, as well as the Aqualabo ODEON Open One and the ODEON X as a larger platform with a large graphic display, more memory and its own PC software. The following table compares the four models:
| Feature | NEON | NEON OPEN | ODEON Open One | ODEON X |
| Sensor replacement | Hard-wired sensor, single-parameter | Open Technology, interchangeable digital sensors | Open Technology, interchangeable digital sensors | Open Technology, interchangeable digital sensors |
| Sensor channels | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Display | Compact display | Compact display | 4-inch graphics display, 240 x 320 pixels | 4-inch graphic display, 240 x 320 pixels |
| Memory | up to 30,000 data points | up to 30,000 data points | Over 100,000 GLP-compliant data records | Over 100,000 GLP-compliant data sets |
| PC connection | Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi | USB, including ODEON Viewer software | USB, including ODEON Viewer software |
Within the product range, the ODEON X is the only model with two sensor channels. Those who only need one parameter are better served by the NEON, NEON OPEN or the ODEON Open One; those who regularly measure two parameters simultaneously will save time and reduce the number of devices required with the ODEON X.
Typical applications
With two sensor channels, the ODEON X is particularly suitable for applications where two parameters are regularly measured together:
- Municipal wastewater treatment with simultaneous pH and conductivity monitoring
- Industrial wastewater treatment and process water monitoring
- Drinking water monitoring
- Surface waters and natural water bodies in field applications
- Measurement series where two parameters need to be recorded together on a regular basis
Day-to-day use, calibration and maintenance
The PHEHT and PHT pH sensors are calibrated at 3 points; their cartridges can be replaced as required. The PHEHT also measures redox in the range from -1000 to +1000 mV. The C4E conductivity sensor is calibrated across 4 measurement ranges, each with 2 points, and is maintenance-free according to the manufacturer. The ODEON X automatically recognises both sensor types via their respective channels and carries out a self-diagnosis. Suitable pH buffer solutions from our range are available for pH calibration; for replacing worn-out electrodes, please take a look at our range of electrodes.
Data export, storage and disposal
Charging and connection to a PC are carried out via the same 7-pin metal connector. The ODEON Viewer software analyses the measurement series from both channels in tabular and graphical form and exports them as CSV, XLS, XLSX, JPEG, PNG, TIF or PDF files. The manufacturer specifies a storage temperature range of -25 to +65 °C at 0 to 80 per cent relative humidity. At the end of its service life, the device must be disposed of as waste electrical and electronic equipment via a separate collection scheme; see ‘Regulatory information’ below for further details.
Reason for investment: two channels instead of two devices
Those who already have suitable sensors or wish to add the second pair of sensors at a later date should opt for the Aqualabo ODEON X base unit without sensors. Those who only need to measure one parameter from the outset can save money with the single-channel Aqualabo ODEON Open One. Investing in the dual-channel platform pays off as soon as two parameters are regularly measured together, as this requires just one device and one data set instead of two separate measurements using two devices.
Frequently asked questions about the ODEON X
What distinguishes the ODEON X from the ODEON Open One?
The ODEON X has two sensor channels, whilst the ODEON Open One has one. According to the data sheet, the display, memory, protection rating and housing are identical for both devices; the only difference is the number of sensor connections.
Which sensor combinations are available for the ODEON X?
The current range includes pH/redox/temperature (PHEHT), pHT without redox and conductivity (C4E), available individually or as combination sets: PHEHT plus C4E or PHT plus C4E.
What is a Y-cable and what is it used for?
The Y-cable is an optional accessory that allows two digital PONSEL sensors to be connected to a single input on the device.
How many measurement values can the device store?
The 8 MB memory holds more than 100,000 GLP-compliant data records, each with a sample ID, user ID, date and time.
Is a charger included in the scope of delivery?
No, according to the manufacturer, no ODEON-X kit includes a charger. The device is powered by 4 AA alkaline batteries; a charging cable and 4 NiMH rechargeable batteries are available as a separate accessory kit, reference NC-ACC-C-00001.
What is the device’s protection rating?
The housing is rated to IP67.
Can I retrofit a second sensor later?
In the single-parameter sets, only one channel is initially fitted; the second channel can be added later with another digital PONSEL sensor.
