To transfer solvents from a steel drum or canister, a system is required that does not involve handling the liquid in the open. The solvent transfer system with an outlet elbow operates using compressed air or an inert gas such as nitrogen. The gas pressure forces the liquid upwards through the dip tube and through the fixed outlet elbow into the receiving container. Two immersion depths, 60 and 95 centimetres, cater for canisters and standard drums up to 220 litres.

Compressed air or inert gas instead of a motor

Instead of an electric or manually operated drive, the system uses pure compressed air or an inert gas. This also makes it suitable for high-purity liquids, where a motor-driven pump would be undesirable. A supplied pressure regulator adjusts the delivery pressure; the flow rate is around 10 litres per minute, and the viscosity of the medium may be up to approximately 500 mPa·s. Three adaptors for the pressure supply (G 1/4 inch) included in the scope of delivery cater for different compressors and gas cylinders.

Fixed outlet elbow for a fixed workstation

The outlet elbow is rigidly mounted and is suitable when the receiving container is positioned directly beneath or next to the drum, for example when filling laboratory bottles at a fixed workstation. According to Bürkle, the outlet elbow and outlet hose are interchangeable, meaning that the same basic system can be retrofitted with a flexible hose if required.

Two immersion depths for different container sizes

The 60-centimetre version is designed for canisters and smaller drums up to approximately 60 litres; the dip tube has a diameter of 15 millimetres. The 95-centimetre version, with a 21-millimetre immersion tube diameter, is suitable for standard 220-litre drums. In both cases, the immersion tube can be continuously adjusted to the actual drum depth, ensuring that it does not rest on the drum base and that the final residual quantity cannot be reached.

Safety when handling flammable solvents

Bürkle expressly points out that the pump and pressure regulator must be earthed and that an anti-static kit must also be used when decanting flammable or highly flammable solvents. The system can be used with UN containers and drums with a test pressure of at least 150 kPa. A grounding cable for the pressure regulator unit is included in the scope of delivery, as is a transport stand that keeps the system stable even when not positioned directly next to the drum.

Compact system with accessories for mobile use

The transport stand supplied holds the pressure regulator unit and connecting hose together when the system is moved between different drums or workstations. Two protective plugs seal the connections during transport or when the system is not in use, preventing any medium from dripping out or dirt from entering. Bürkle also marks the system with a pictogram indicating suitability for food contact, without specifically referring to a particular standard such as EU 1935/2004. It is therefore advisable to consult the manufacturer for final approval in food-contact applications.

Service and procurement

The appropriate immersion depth depends on the drum size at the workplace. For smaller canisters up to 10 litres with a GL45 connection, the Mini solvent pump is often the more practical choice; for simple manual operation without a compressed air connection, the manual solvent pump is recommended. When dealing with particularly pure media in a manually operated version, the Ultrarein PTFE drum pump is more suitable.
