Elma Elmasonic Select 40 Ultrasonic Bath with Heating, 3.9 Litre, 37 kHz, 1106668

Watch components, jewellery and test tubes are among the smaller items the Select series cleans. The Elma Elmasonic Select 40 holds 3.9 litres, with a recommended working volume of 2.9 litres. It operates at 37 kHz, has a heater and stores four programs. Elma aims the Select series at research and development laboratories, pharmaceutical and industrial analytical laboratories, workshops and repair shops, metalworking companies, watchmakers and jewellers.

Tank, fill level and basket

The tank measures 215 x 115 x 145 mm internally. The fill level is 115 mm, leaving 90 mm from the basket floor to the liquid level. The original accessory basket has internal dimensions of 190 x 105 x 75 mm and can be loaded with up to 3 kg. The supplied plastic lid can be turned upside down and used as a drip tray for a basket. The Select 40 has no drain connection, so no hose nozzle is included.

Power and ultrasonic modes

The effective ultrasonic power is 120 W with 480 W peak power, the heater delivers 200 W, and the total power consumption is 320 W. There is a choice of five modes. Eco is the gentle mode, Sweep distributes the mechanical cleaning effect evenly, Pulse increases the peak power for stubborn soiling, Dynamic combines Pulse and Sweep, and Degas prepares the liquid for the subsequent cleaning. Auto-Degas and a temperature-controlled start are also available. Four programs store a combination of mode, duration and temperature, and the Select button calls up program operation.

Operation at the unit

The large display shows duration and temperature, and settings are made via a swipe-type membrane keypad with plus and minus keys. Every input is confirmed acoustically. The duration can be selected from 1 minute to 6 hours, the setpoint temperature from 25 to 80 °C, and there is also an adjustable limit temperature between 40 and 60 °C. Dry-run protection is active when the heating is on, and after 8 hours the unit switches off as a safety measure. The sound pressure level with lid at a distance of 1 m is below 80 dB(A). The ultrasonic pressure level is below 110 dB, also measured with lid at a distance of 1 m. The unit has protection rating IP20 and protection class I.

When a different tank is the better fit

The tank of the Select 40 is 215 mm long. The Elmasonic Select 60 has a tank of 280 x 130 x 145 mm and 5.9 litres total volume, plus 400 W heating power and 150 W effective ultrasonic power. Unlike the Select 40, it has a drain connection. The Elmasonic Select 80 has a tank of 475 x 110 x 145 mm, so more than twice as long with 5 mm less depth. Frequency, modes and program memory are the same on all three units.
