Uncompromising temperature control during wet grinding: the IKA MultiDrive BL 2000 T mixing vessel
In demanding food analysis, biological research and pharmaceutical quality control, the comminution of moist, fatty or fibrous samples (wet grinding) is a fundamental standard process. However, when processing these tough matrices in high-performance mills, the enormous shear forces inevitably generate significant frictional heat. For samples that are highly sensitive to temperature – such as fresh meat, enzyme-containing plant tissue or vitamin-rich vegetables – this uncontrolled rise in temperature is an absolute deal-breaker. Heat leads to the irreversible denaturation of proteins, the destruction of volatile flavour compounds and the fatal distortion of heat-labile analytes. It is precisely for these highly critical, temperature-sensitive applications that IKA has developed the sophisticated MultiDrive BL 2000 T mixing vessel (MPN 0025003962). The crucial ‘T’ in the product name stands for the integrated temperature sensor. This smart 2-litre mixing vessel, designed as a blender, transforms your IKA MultiDrive universal mill not only into a powerful wet grinder, but also into a fully monitored, analytically reliable high-performance system.
The innovation: integrated sensor and RFID data transmission
The technological heart of the BL 2000 T is the seamless, intelligent communication between the mixing vessel and the drive unit. A high-precision temperature sensor is permanently integrated into the base of the vessel, measuring the exact thermal load on your sample in real time throughout the entire grinding process. Data is transmitted from the rotating vessel to the mill entirely wirelessly via state-of-the-art RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology. This design is truly groundbreaking, as it completely eliminates the need for cumbersome, wear-prone plug connections or error-prone sliding contacts, which could be damaged during rinsing. If you use this vessel in conjunction with the IKA MultiDrive control premium drive, you can set a customised, strict temperature limit via the mill’s display. As soon as the sample reaches this critical threshold due to grinding friction, the system reacts fully automatically: it alerts the user, switches off the drive in good time or adjusts the speed before thermal damage can occur to your valuable ingredients. This guarantees you absolutely valid, reproducible and thermally unadulterated measurement results at all times.
Impressive performance for demanding sample matrices
In addition to its excellent temperature monitoring, the BL 2000 T impresses with its sheer mechanical grinding power during wet grinding. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the vessel is ideally suited to an extremely wide variety of challenging raw materials: It effortlessly grinds sinewy meat and fatty sausages for food safety testing, pulverises hard soya beans for nitrogen determination, processes extremely tough, moist silage for agricultural feed analysis, and purées fresh vegetables for residue analysis. A solid standard blend knife made from high-quality, corrosion-resistant stainless steel (1.4034) is included as standard. This razor-sharp tool, with a diameter of 75 mm, effortlessly penetrates thick cell walls at extremely high circumferential speeds of up to 78.5 m/s, cuts through muscle fibres and generates powerful hydrodynamic turbulence, guaranteeing absolutely uniform mixing.
Volume and time savings: the 2-litre advantage in everyday laboratory work
An extremely common problem in analytical work is the lack of representativeness caused by sample sizes that are too small. If only a tiny piece is taken from a large food container, this sample is rarely representative of the entire batch. The IKA MultiDrive BL 2000 T solves this problem thanks to its enormous maximum usable volume of 2,000 millilitres (2 litres). This enormous volume allows you to process large, statistically valid cross-sectional samples in a single, rapid batch process. Another major advantage that makes your work easier is the considerable tolerance for sample feeding: the maximum feed grain size is an impressive 30 millimetres. This means you do not need to spend time pre-cutting your moist samples into tiny fragments with a scalpel beforehand; coarsely crushed chunks can be placed directly into the mixing vessel. This drastically minimises set-up and preparation times in your laboratory and reduces process costs.
Uncompromising hygiene and GLP-compliant deep cleaning
Where raw meat, biological tissue or high-fat suspensions are handled, the risk of dangerous cross-contamination (carry-over) is ever-present. Even minute traces of protein or DNA from the previous sample remaining in the vessel can completely ruin expensive follow-up analyses. Despite the highly complex RFID and sensor technology in the base, IKA has designed the BL 2000 T vessel to ensure absolute, uncompromising hygiene. The entire vessel, along with all its components that come into contact with the sample, can be cleaned conveniently, safely and in accordance with standards in the laboratory dishwasher. The key design feature for thorough microbiological cleaning: the sharp stainless-steel mixing blade can be completely dismantled in just a few simple steps. This ensures that absolutely no stubborn biofilms, fats or sample residues can accumulate beneath the blades or on the seals (which are made from high-quality PTFE and silicone). The transparent housing of the BL 2000 T is made from durable PCTG plastic, which allows for constant visual monitoring of the grinding process. With compact dimensions of 180 x 280 x 220 mm and a light weight of just 1.25 kg, the vessel can be handled ergonomically and in a way that is easy on the back. By investing in the IKA MultiDrive BL 2000 T mixing vessel, you turn your mill into the ultimate, temperature-safe instrument for wet grinding.

Individual requirements & accessories
To operate this high-tech vessel and its safety features, you must have the system’s premium core component: the IKA MultiDrive control drive unit (the cheaper ‘basic’ version cannot read the sensor’s RFID signal). If you wish to grind extremely hard or dry materials (such as stones, ceramics or hard cereal grains), we do not recommend this wet grinding vessel. In this case, we recommend the specially developed IKA grinding chambers (MI series) with hard impact blades. The stainless steel mixing blade (BL 2000.1) included can, of course, also be ordered separately as a spare part in the event of heavy wear. Please feel free to contact our expert procurement service at any time for a bespoke configuration of your grinding system.
