Kern OCM 161 Inverted Microscope, Trinocular, Halogen Transmitted Light, 10x-40x, Phase-contrast Objective

Product information "Kern OCM 161 Inverted Microscope, Trinocular, Halogen Transmitted Light, 10x-40x, Phase-contrast Objective"

In an inverted microscope, the objectives are positioned beneath the stage, with light coming from above. This ensures that culture vessels remain accessible from above, and the working distance is generous. Kern describes this design of the OCM 161, for example, as particularly suitable for the observation and analysis of cell cultures. The OCM 161 is the model in the OCM series featuring halogen transmitted light and no reflected light illumination; it is trinocular and fitted with Infinity-Plan objectives.

Bright-field illumination

The transmitted light illumination consists of a 30-watt halogen lamp, which is infinitely adjustable. Kern describes it as powerful and designed for illuminating the specimen in brightfield mode. The instrument is powered via a desktop power supply unit with a detachable ‘cold’ plug (type C14), 100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz. The protection class is III. A reflected light source is not built in; in this series, Kern offers fluorescence via separate units (see configuration).

Objectives, eyepieces and head

The five-position revolver houses Infinity-Plan objectives with 10x, 20x and 40x magnification, as well as a PH 20x phase-contrast objective. The HWF 10x eyepieces have a 22 mm field of view, an anti-fungus coating and a high eye point. The Siedentopf tube is trinocular and inclined at 45 degrees. The interpupillary distance ranges from 48 to 76 mm, and dioptre adjustment is available on both sides. For phase-contrast observation, phase-contrast sliders, a centring eyepiece and a green filter are included as standard.

Condenser, stage and focus

The condenser is an Abbe condenser with an aperture of 0.3 and an aperture diaphragm; it is permanently mounted and has a working distance of 72 mm. Kern describes it as suitable for bright-field, phase-contrast and fluorescence applications. The mechanical stage has a travel range of 128 mm and 180 mm and accommodates a specimen holder for Ø 110 mm. The scope of delivery includes a holder for 54 mm culture dishes; holders for 35 and 65 mm dishes are available as accessories. The coaxial coarse and fine adjustment mechanism operates in increments of 0.002 mm. The instrument measures 660 x 600 x 335 mm and has a net weight of 15 kg.

Expansion via accessories

Fluorescence is available as an option for the OCM 161. Kern supplies a 5 W LED fluorescence unit (B/G, OBB-A1631), a 5 W LED unit for B/G/V/UV (OBB-A1632) and a 100 W HBO unit (OBB-A1516). C-mount adaptors are available for cameras (OBB-A1514, 0.5x with adjustable focus OBB-A1515, 0.75x OBB-A1590) as well as the microscope cameras ODC 825, 832, 841 and 854, and the ODC 241 tablet camera.

The OCM 161 alongside the other OCM models

If you want fluorescence right from the start, take a look at the OCM 166 (halogen and HBO incident light), the OCM 167 or the OCM 168 (both with LED transmitted light and LED incident light). The OCM 161 is sufficient for brightfield, phase contrast and the daily monitoring of cultures.

Typical applications

Kern cites the observation and analysis of cell cultures as the core application for the OCM series.

  • Observation of cell cultures in culture dishes
  • Bright-field microscopy with halogen illumination
  • Phase contrast with the PH-20x objective
