Product information "Kern OCM 167 Inverted Microscope, Trinocular, 5 W LED for Reflected and Transmitted Light, 10x-40x"
We stock four inverted microscopes from the OCM series in our shop. The Kern OCM 167 is one of two models equipped with a 5-watt LED for both transmitted light and reflected light. The head is trinocular; the revolver houses Infinity-Plan objectives with 10x, 20x and 40x magnification, as well as a PH 20x phase-contrast objective. The following overview shows where the OCM 167 fits into the range.
| Model | Transmitted light / Reflected light / Power supply / Net weight |
| OCM 161 | 30 W halogen / no reflected light / desktop power supply / 15 kg |
| OCM 166 | Halogen 30 W / HBO 100 W / built-in / 22 kg |
| OCM 167 (this model) | LED 5 W / LED 5 W / plug-in power supply / 16 kg |
| OCM 168 | LED 5 W / LED 5 W / mains adaptor / 17 kg |
The optics, table and head of the OCM 167 and OCM 168 are identical. The difference lies in the fluorescence filter unit: the OCM 167 uses B and G, whilst the OCM 168 additionally uses V and UV. The OCM 167 weighs 16 kg, the OCM 168 17 kg.
Illumination
The transmitted light source features a 5-watt LED and is dimmable. The reflected light source is also a 5-watt LED and is used for epi-illumination; Kern describes the OCM 167 as an inverted biological laboratory microscope with fluorescence. The Abbe condenser with an aperture of 0.3 and an aperture diaphragm has a working distance of 72 mm and, according to Kern, is designed for brightfield, phase contrast and fluorescence applications. The microscope is powered by a detachable plug-in power supply (100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz, 0.3 A, protection class III).
Optics, head and focus
The eyepieces are HWF 10x with a 22 mm field of view, anti-fungal coating and high eye point. The Siedentopf tube is inclined at 45 degrees; the interpupillary distance ranges from 48 to 76 mm, and dioptre adjustment is available on both sides. The coaxial coarse and fine focus controls adjust in steps of 0.002 mm. With 10x eyepieces, total magnifications range from 100x to 400x; in phase contrast mode with the PH-20x objective, the magnification is 200x. A phase contrast slider, centring eyepiece and green filter are included as standard.
Stage and specimen holder
The mechanical stage has a travel range of 128 mm and 180 mm. Supplied with the instrument are a specimen holder for Ø 110 mm and a holder for 54 mm culture dishes; holders for 35 mm and 65 mm are available as accessories. The instrument measures 782 x 304 x 530 mm (W x D x H).
Cameras
Cameras can be connected to the third tube outlet via a C-mount adapter (OBB-A1514, 0.5x with adjustable focus OBB-A1515, 0.75x OBB-A1590). Kern’s range for this includes, amongst others, the 4K camera ODC 854, the HD tablet with 4K camera ODC 251, the cooled fluorescence camera ODC 861 and the tablet camera ODC 241.
Typical applications
Kern cites the observation and analysis of cell cultures as a key application for the OCM series.
- Observation and analysis of cell cultures
- Bright-field and phase-contrast microscopy
- Fluorescence studies
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the OCM 167 and the OCM 166? The OCM 166 uses halogen transmitted light and 100 W HBO reflected light and weighs 22 kg, whilst the OCM 167 uses LED transmitted light and LED reflected light (5 W each) and weighs 16 kg.
What is the magnification of the OCM 167? The objectives provide 10x, 20x and 40x magnification. With the 10x eyepieces, this gives a total magnification of 100x to 400x.
Which holders are compatible? The specimen holder for Ø 110 mm is included. There is also a holder for 54-mm culture dishes; holders for 35 and 65 mm are available as accessories.
