The WTW SenTix Sp is a penetration electrode for semi-solid samples such as cheese, meat or yoghurt: its tip is spear-shaped and is inserted directly into the sample.
Spear tip, stepped shaft and perforated diaphragm
The shaft features a stepped design, with lengths of 65 and 25 mm and diameters of 15 and 5 mm. The material is PPE/PS. A perforated opening serves as the diaphragm; the reference system is Referid, a lifetime polymer filling that does not require refilling. The membrane resistance is less than 400 MΩ.
Measuring range and temperature
The pH measuring range is from 2 to 13, and the permissible temperature range is from 0 to 80 °C. No temperature sensor is fitted. The sample temperature must therefore be measured separately.
S7 plug-in head and cable selection
The SenTix Sp is supplied without a cable. Depending on the measuring instrument, the AS/DIN connection cable (1 m, order no. 108110) or (3 m, 108112), or the AS/BNC connection cable (1 m (108114). The manufacturer offers a version with a fixed cable and probe as the SenTix Sp-T.
Differences from the RJD and Sur
The SenTix RJD has a dome-shaped diaphragm, a glass shaft and a built-in temperature sensor, and is designed for contaminated laboratory samples, emulsions and creams. The SenTix Sur measures on damp surfaces using a flat diaphragm. Like the Sp, both use the Referid filling. The spear-shaped design of the Sp is intended for piercing semi-solid media.
Handling after use
Gas bubbles behind the membrane are removed by shaking before measurement. Between measurements, the measuring chain is stored in reference electrolyte (3 mol/l KCl, Ag⁺-free) and, overnight, in the filled rinsing cap. Greasy residues are removed using water containing washing-up liquid; the measuring chain is then conditioned for at least one hour and recalibrated. Strong acids and alkalis, oils, fats and proteins shorten the service life of the measuring chain.
