Pigment powders and similar pastes tend to clump together inside a sampling lance and block the opening before a sample has even been taken. The pigment sampler with a 25 per cent slot opening is designed precisely for such agglomerating, slightly sticky bulk materials, featuring a narrower chamber opening that cleanly accommodates even low-flow materials.
Narrow slot opening for sticky products
The collection chamber opens across 25 per cent of the tube’s circumference, with a chamber width of 19 millimetres. This narrower opening is intended for pigments, pastes and other agglomerating or sticky bulk materials, which, with a wider opening, would easily get caught on the edge or block the chamber. The actual amount of material that enters the chamber depends not only on the width of the opening but also on the bulk material’s own tendency to stick together.
Tapered piercing tip
The lance tapers to a point for insertion, enabling it to penetrate even firmer, clumped material. The tube and outer diameters are 30 millimetres, and it is made from V4A stainless steel (1.4404, AISI 316L). Once the lance has been inserted to the desired depth, it is rotated or moved slightly so that the collection chamber fills with the surrounding material before it is withdrawn again.
Three lengths to suit container height
The penetration depth ranges from 300 to 600 to 900 millimetres; the total length is accordingly 432, 732 or 1,032 millimetres. The sample volume increases with length from 145 through 312 to 480 millilitres; for quality assurance checks on incoming goods, the shortest version is usually sufficient, whilst the longer lance is required for inspections deep within a silo or container. As the chamber remains open throughout the entire penetration depth, a single length can be used to take a cross-section through several layers of the container, rather than merely sampling a single point.
Markings and material certification
Bürkle labels the product with the pictogram ‘Manufactured in accordance with DIN standard’, without specifying the exact standard number on the product page. For the stainless steel components used in this series, a material certificate from the manufacturer is also available, confirming the material specification 1.4404.
Typical industries
The pigment sampler is used wherever colour and pigment powders, printing ink pastes or similar sticky precursors are tested for batch conformity, for example in the paint and varnish industry or in the chemical production of pigment concentrates. An inspector who needs to approve a new batch of pigment on receipt of goods uses the lance to draw a sample from the centre of the sack or drum without having to open the container completely.
Selection based on slot opening
For more adhesive or sticky products, which are less likely to enter the chamber with a 25 per cent slot opening, there is the identically constructed pigment sampler with a 50 per cent slot opening. The wider chamber accommodates a smaller sample volume per penetration depth, but this makes it easier to collect highly adhesive material. For cohesive powders without a pronounced tendency to stick, the Scratcher powder sampler is an alternative; for samples taken from silos from above, the SiloPicker is recommended.

The appropriate length depends on the insertion depth of the respective container; the sample volume increases automatically with the length.
