IKA LR-2.ST Starvisc 200 Laboratory Reactor, Measuring Stirrer, 0020020603

Product information "IKA LR-2.ST Starvisc 200 Laboratory Reactor, Measuring Stirrer, 0020020603"

Anyone developing a chemical reaction on a laboratory scale and later wanting to transfer it to a larger scale needs more than a stirrer display that only reports a trend. The IKA LR-2.ST Starvisc 200 laboratory reactor measures torque and viscosity directly at the STARVISC 200-2.5 control measuring stirrer while the reaction is running, not afterwards on a separate viscometer. This distinguishes it from the four other versions of the LR-2.ST series, which work with EUROSTAR stirrers and a general torque trend display but provide no calibrated measurement. For high-viscosity media up to 100,000 mPas and working volumes of 500 to 2,000 ml, the system therefore delivers reproducible measured values for process development instead of just a rough estimate.

The complete stand system is supplied: the LR.SI base component, the HEAD,REACTOR,LR2.10 reactor lid and the STARVISC 200-2.5 control measuring stirrer. The reactor vessel itself is not included in the scope of delivery. The glass vessel is ordered separately to match the required working volume. This applies equally to all five variants of the LR-2.ST series and should be planned for with the first order of a system.

True torque and viscosity measurement during the reaction

The STARVISC 200-2.5 control measures torque and the viscosity derived from it in a calibrated way at the stirring shaft, with a maximum value of 200 Ncm. This is exactly what makes the difference from the general torque trend display of the other LR-2.ST variants: there the display shows whether the torque is rising or falling, here there is a reliable measured value that can be documented and taken into an evaluation. For product development in which viscosity profiles during a reaction (for example in polymerisations or when resins cure) decide the process quality, this is the real reason to buy this model within the series. The minimum speed of 6 rpm additionally allows very slow stirring when a reaction tolerates only little shear energy.

Temperature range, working volume and vacuum operation

The working volume is between 500 and 2,000 ml. With a dispersing tool, at least 800 ml should be in the vessel so that the shearing action does not run into empty space. The working temperature ranges from -50 to 230 °C, and the telescopic stand has a stroke of 390 mm for different vessel sizes and set-ups. Vacuum operation down to 25 mbar is possible, for example for degassing media or for reactions that are to take place at reduced pressure. The product-contacting parts of the system itself are made of borosilicate glass, FFPM, PTFE and steel 1.4571. The reactor lid has three NS 29/32 openings and two NS 14/23 openings for sensors, additions or a reflux condenser.

Reproducibility and documentation of the measured values

For process development, besides the measured value itself, it also matters that a stirring experiment can later be repeated identically. Because the STARVISC 200-2.5 control records torque and viscosity continuously, a batch can be evaluated over time and compared with later batches, instead of merely noting a subjective assessment of the stirrer display. When transferring laboratory results to a larger scale, this traceability is often more important than a single measurement, because deviations between two batches only show up in comparison. For laboratories with documented equipment qualification, factory calibration certificates and IQ/OQ documents for the system are also available, see the section on the procurement service. Especially when comparing different recipes or batches, the system thus provides an objective basis on which decisions in the laboratory can be founded, instead of relying on the impression of a single person at the stirrer.

Typical applications

  • Optimisation and reproduction of chemical reaction, mixing and homogenising processes on a laboratory scale
  • Product development requiring documented torque and viscosity measurement during the reaction, for example with polymerisations, resins or adhesives
  • Processing of high-viscosity media up to 100,000 mPas
  • Reactions under vacuum or reduced pressure, for example for degassing
  • Scale-up preparatory work before moving to a larger production scale

Selection guide within the LR-2.ST family

The LR-2.ST series is available in five versions with the same stand system and reactor lid, but different stirrers. The stirrer determines torque, maximum viscosity and whether a calibrated measurement is possible:

VersionStirrer, max. torque, max. viscosity, measuring function
Starvisc 200 (this device)STARVISC 200-2.5 control, 200 Ncm, 100,000 mPas, calibrated torque and viscosity measurement
LR-2.ST the High-PerformerEUROSTAR 660 high torque control, 660 Ncm, 150,000 mPas, torque trend display only
LR-2.ST the AllrounderEUROSTAR 200 control, 200 Ncm, 100,000 mPas, torque trend display only
LR-2.ST the VersatileEUROSTAR 100 control with clockwise/anticlockwise rotation, 100 Ncm, 70,000 mPas, torque trend display only
LR-2.ST the Compact PowerEUROSTAR 60 control, 60 Ncm, 50,000 mPas, torque trend display only

Anyone who actually has to measure and document viscosity during the reaction cannot get around the Starvisc 200 version. If a pure trend display is sufficient and higher torque for very viscous media is wanted instead, the LR-2.ST the High-Performer is the more suitable choice. For applications with lower viscosity requirements and a smaller budget, the LR-2.ST the Allrounder, the LR-2.ST the Versatile and the LR-2.ST the Compact Power are available. The STARVISC 200-2.5 control measuring stirrer is also available separately as a replacement or retrofit part if required.

Scope of delivery

  • 1 x LR-2.ST stand system
  • 1 x LR.SI base and stand component
  • 1 x HEAD,REACTOR,LR2.10 reactor lid
  • 1 x STARVISC 200-2.5 control torque measuring stirrer

The reactor vessel is not part of the scope of delivery. The glass vessel is ordered separately to match the required working volume, as are accessories such as stirring elements for other applications, temperature probes, a vacuum pump or a circulating thermostat, if these are not yet available.

Use and maintenance

The system weighs 25 kg and belongs on a stable, level work surface with sufficient load capacity. Before each vacuum operation, a brief visual check of the standard ground joint connections at the lid is worthwhile, as a leak otherwise costs vacuum performance. The permissible ambient temperature range is 5 to 40 °C, the permissible relative humidity 80 %. After stirring high-viscosity or sticky media, the measuring stirrer can be detached from the lid for cleaning without dismantling the entire stand system. When changing between media of different viscosity, it makes sense to check the measuring stirrer for residues before the next batch, because dried-on residues can falsify the torque measurement. At the end of its service life, the system belongs, as electrical equipment, in the separate collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment, not in household waste.

Individual requirements and procurement service

For the LR-2.ST Starvisc 200, IKA offers an extensive accessory range: reactor vessels in different volumes, further stirring elements such as anchor stirrers or baffles, dispersing tools of the T 25 series, pH and temperature probes, vacuum pumps and controllers, and circulating thermostats for active temperature control. Factory calibration certificates and IQ/OQ documentation are also available if required. Through our procurement service, LT Laborhandel supports you in putting together the right reactor vessel and further components for your LR-2.ST system. In making the selection we take into account the planned working volume, type of medium and process temperature, so that vessel and drive match each other.

Maximum efficiency in dissolution and deagglomeration: the IKA S 25 KV - 26 LR dissolver The IKA S 25 KV - 26 LR dissolver (MPN 0020015397) represents the very pinnacle of modern mixing and dispersion technology for demanding laboratory reactor systems. In many industrial and research sectors – be it in chemical synthesis, cosmetics development, paint production or food technology – users face the significant daily challenge of homogeneously incorporating fine powders, highly cohesive solids or sticky pigments into liquid media. Very often, stubborn agglomerates form when these solids are stirred in. These disruptive clumps of particles are simply moved in circles by conventional agitators such as propeller, paddle or anchor agitators, but are not effectively broken up mechanically. The result is incomplete reactions, poor textures or significantly prolonged process times. This high-speed dissolver was designed precisely for these critical and energy-intensive process steps. It delivers uncompromising performance in intensive mixing, dissolution and deagglomeration to ensure homogeneous, completely lump-free dispersions in the shortest possible time. The aerodynamic dissolver principle In direct comparison to a conventional rotor-stator dispersing tool, in which the medium is forced through a very narrow, defined gap between two components, the S 25 KV - 26 LR model utilises a specially serrated dissolver disc with a diameter of 26 millimetres. This solid metal disc rotates freely at extremely high speeds (high speed) within the liquid medium. The sharp teeth on the edge of the disc, which are alternately curved upwards and downwards, generate immense local shear forces and strong turbulence. The rotation accelerates the liquid radially outwards with great force, which simultaneously creates an enormous axial suction effect (vortex formation) at the centre. This intelligent flow pattern draws the floating or agglomerated powder particles from the liquid surface directly downwards towards the rotating toothed disc. There, they are literally shattered by the high kinetic energy of the teeth and broken down into their fine primary particles. In process engineering, this principle is the absolute gold standard method for the rapid incorporation of poorly wettable thickeners, colour pigments or high-molecular-weight polymers into aqueous or highly solvent-based systems. Vacuum and pressure tightness (the ‘KV’ seal) Another outstanding feature of this stirring tool, which is indispensable for many applications, is indicated by the specific abbreviation ‘KV’. In IKA products, this stands for a high-quality ball bearing system combined with a special sealing technology that makes the tool absolutely vacuum- and pressure-tight (up to the respective system-specific limits of the laboratory reactors). When working professionally with state-of-the-art laboratory reactors such as the IKA LR 1000 control System or the versatile LR-2.ST series, this leak-tightness is of fundamental importance. Sensitive chemical reactions or the production of high-purity cosmetics and emulsions often require the strict exclusion of oxygen. Users must work under a protective inert gas atmosphere or specifically degas the sample under vacuum to avoid disruptive air pockets in pasty, viscous media. A conventional, open dispersing tool would cause the reactor chamber to leak under these extreme conditions and ruin the process. The S 25 KV - 26 LR dissolver agitator, on the other hand, seals the reactor opening absolutely securely via the flange. This allows you to deagglomerate your samples at full high-speed rotation whilst a strong vacuum is maintained inside the vessel – an enormous technological advantage for process quality. Material quality, hygiene and compatibility As this dissolver stirrer is designed for direct, continuous contact with aggressive chemicals, highly abrasive pigments and reactive media, all parts in contact with the media (including the dissolver disc and the shaft) are made from high-quality, chemically extremely resistant AISI 316L stainless steel. This industrially proven material not only guarantees outstanding resistance to most organic solvents, acids and alkalis, but can also be cleaned safely and thoroughly after use, leaving no residue. Thanks to its robust construction, the unit is ideally suited to the rigours of everyday laboratory use. As an original accessory, the S 25 KV - 26 LR is precisely matched to IKA’s reactor platforms. It is fully compatible with the T 25 digital LR disperser, the LR 1000 systems (basic and control) and the entire LR-2.ST series (including Allrounder, High Performer and Starvisc). Investing in this highly specialised tool massively increases the efficiency of your laboratory processes, significantly reduces mixing times and decisively optimises the quality of your end products. IKA T 25 digital LR disperser, for laboratory reactors, up to 2000 ml, 0020008820
IKA T 25 digital LR disperser, for laboratory reactors, up to 2000 ml, 0020008820
Herstellernummer: 0020008820

Anyone wishing to prepare emulsions, suspensions or nanoparticle formulations not in an open beaker but in a closed, temperature-controlled laboratory reactor will need a drive that can be integrated into this system. The IKA T 25 digital LR disperser (0020008820) is designed precisely for this purpose: a dedicated drive unit for high-speed dispersion in laboratory reactors, with a volume range of 1 to 2,000 millilitres (based on water) and a speed range of 600 to 25,000 revolutions per minute. Unlike a benchtop disperser for open beakers, it is designed from the outset for mechanical integration into closed reactor systems and is not intended as a stand-alone, ready-to-use laboratory instrument. Powerful drive with infinitely variable speed control The 800-watt motor (500 watts output power) covers a continuously and electronically adjustable speed range from 600 to 25,000 revolutions per minute, displayed via a digital LED display with a deviation of just 1 per cent from the set target speed. In combination with the appropriate IKA dispersion tools, high shear forces are generated in the narrow shear gap between the rotor and stator, which break down particles and droplets and homogenise liquid phases – the classic operating principle of rotor-stator dispersers. The maximum permissible viscosity of the medium is 5,000 mPa·s, a guideline value that must be taken into account when selecting the dispersing tool and controlling the process. Designed for installation in laboratory reactor systems Unlike free-standing bench-top dispersers, the T 25 digital LR is designed as a drive unit only, which can be mechanically coupled with the special dispersing tools of the KD-LR series. These tools are designed for use in closed laboratory reactors such as the IKA LR 1000 and, thanks to high-quality shaft seals, enable operation under vacuum – which is useful for preventing aerosol and foam formation in media containing surfactants or for processing oxidation-sensitive batches under an inert atmosphere. Neither the dispersing tool nor the reactor itself is included with the T 25 digital LR; both must be purchased separately to suit the specific application. Electronic overload protection and digital display An integrated microprocessor maintains the set speed even when the resistance of the medium changes, for example if the viscosity of a batch increases during the reaction. If the stirring tool becomes suddenly blocked, for example by a jammed particle, an electronic overload protection system switches off the motor and displays an error code; this protects both the motor and the coupled dispersing tool. The unit is designed for continuous operation with a permissible duty cycle of 100 per cent. Compact design for mounting on a reactor stand Measuring 87 x 271 x 106 millimetres and weighing 2.5 kilograms, the T 25 digital LR can be mounted on a reactor stand to save space. The noise level without the dispersing tool fitted is 75 dB(A). The housing is rated to protection class IP 20 and approved for an ambient temperature of 5 to 40 degrees Celsius. It can be connected to either 220 to 240 volts or 100 to 120 volts at 50 or 60 hertz. Selecting the appropriate dispersing tool Which KD-LR tool is suitable in each individual case depends on the reactor volume, the desired immersion depth and the viscosity range of the medium. The tools in this series feature an extended design so that, even in larger reaction vessels, they reach right down to the bottom of the vessel and continue to disperse effectively there, rather than leaving dead volume unused. As the T 25 digital LR is designed as a drive for different reactor sizes and tool variants, the same drive can often continue to be used when process requirements change, whilst only the dispersing tool is replaced. Typical applications As a drive unit for laboratory reactors, the T 25 digital LR is used wherever dispersion processes must take place under controlled, closed conditions: Production of emulsions and creams under air-exclusion conditions in closed reactors Dispersion and homogenisation of suspensions with controlled temperature regulation Scale-up trials between open beaker stirring and pilot reactors Production of finely dispersed systems with limited sample volumes from 1 millilitre Process development in the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries with requirements for reproducibility Technical details Product typeDrive unit for dispersion tools in laboratory reactors Volume range (H₂O)1 to 2,000 ml Motor power (input / output)800 W / 500 W Speed range600 to 25,000 rpm, electronically continuously adjustable Speed deviation1 % Speed displayLED display Maximum permissible viscosity of the medium5,000 mPa·s Noise level (without dispersing tool)75 dB(A) Permissible duty cycle100 % (continuous operation) Motor protectionElectronic overload protection with error code display Dimensions (W x H x D)87 x 271 x 106 mm Arm length / Arm diameter160 mm / 13 mm Weight2.5 kg Protection class (to DIN EN 60529)IP 20 Permissible ambient temperature5 to 40 °C Power supply220 to 240 V or 100 to 120 V, 50/60 Hz Contents of delivery 1 x IKA T 25 digital LR drive unit 1 x mains lead for IT equipment 1 x operating instructions Not included are the required dispersing tool from the KD-LR series, the laboratory reactor itself, and a stand for mounting the drive unit.
