The IKA RW 20 digital stirrer (MPN 0003593000) is the digital further development of the proven RW 20 series and combines a mechanically controlled drive with an LED digital display for the speed. Anyone who regularly has to move stirring volumes of up to 20 litres of water in the laboratory and wants to switch between powerful, low-speed and fast, high-speed stirring will find a robust working tool for daily use here.
Mechanical gearbox with two speed ranges
The RW 20 digital has a gearbox with two speed ranges that is switched manually by lever. Range I covers 60 to 500 rpm and delivers a high torque of up to 150 Ncm at the stirring shaft, suitable for highly viscous media of up to 10,000 mPas, pastes or larger volumes. Range II extends from 240 to 2,000 rpm and is suitable for low-viscosity media and fast dispersing. At a mains frequency of 50 hertz, the ranges are 60 to 500 rpm (range I) and 240 to 2,000 rpm (range II), and at 60 hertz correspondingly 72 to 600 rpm and 288 to 2,400 rpm. The maximum torque at the stirring shaft is 150 Ncm at 100 rpm and falls to 24 Ncm at 1,000 rpm; for a short time, an overload of up to 300 Ncm is even permissible at 60 1/min.
Precision through LED digital display
While power transmission is mechanical, the integrated LED digital display on the front of the unit ensures a speed that can be read at any time and is reproducible. Setting is continuous, the setting accuracy is ±1 rpm, and the deviation of the speed measurement is ±30 rpm. The nominal torque of the drive is 1.5 Nm at a power consumption of 70 watts and an output power of 35 watts. The unit is designed for continuous operation at 100 percent duty cycle.
Pass-through hollow shaft for flexible height adjustment
A practical detail in everyday laboratory work is the pass-through stirring shaft (hollow shaft) with an internal diameter of 10.5 millimetres. It makes it possible to adjust the height of the stirring tool in the chuck (clamping range 0.5 to 10 millimetres) without having to realign the entire stirrer on the stand. The shaft is adjusted at standstill only. The boss rod for mounting on the stand has a diameter of 13 millimetres and a length of 160 millimetres.
Typical applications
With its high torque in the lower speed range and a stirring volume of up to 20 litres, the RW 20 digital is technically suited for:
- Universal stirring tasks in the laboratory with changing batch sizes
- Homogenising and dispersing medium-viscosity to higher-viscosity media of up to 10,000 mPas
- Teaching and industrial laboratories with frequently changing users
- Routine operation in which it is necessary to switch between powerful and fast stirring
Selection guide: stirring mechanically or electronically
Within the IKA stirrer range, the RW 20 digital described here, with its mechanically controlled drive, is contrasted by the compact NANOSTAR 7.5 digital with electronic BLDC control. For stirring volumes of up to 20 litres, high torque in the lower speed range and robust continuous operation, the RW 20 digital is the right choice. If, on the other hand, no more than 5 litres are moved and a particularly compact, electronically controlled design is required, for example in tight space conditions in a fume hood, the NANOSTAR 7.5 digital is the more space-saving alternative.
Differences from larger models of the RW series
If a stirring volume of 20 litres is not sufficient for the planned batch, IKA continues the mechanical RW series in larger sizes: the RW 28 digital for stirring volumes of up to 80 litres and the RW 47 digital for stirring volumes of up to 200 litres. For the majority of laboratory applications with batches of up to 20 litres, the RW 20 digital described here remains the more compact and more economical choice.

Scope of delivery
- 1 x RW 20 digital
- 1 x chuck key
A stand and a cross clamp for mounting as well as a suitable stirring tool are required for operation but are not included in the scope of delivery.
Use, installation, maintenance and disposal
According to protection class IP 20, the RW 20 digital is protected against solid foreign objects from 12.5 millimetres, and contact with splashing water must be avoided. The switching lever for the two speed ranges should only be operated with the motor stopped, as should the height adjustment of the pass-through hollow shaft in the chuck. For a secure stand, a sufficiently heavy stand with a stable cross clamp is recommended, especially when using the high torque in the lower speed range. At the end of its service life, the unit as electrical equipment does not belong in household waste but in the separate collection of waste electrical equipment.
Individual requirements & procurement service
Operating the RW 20 digital requires a stand (for example an IKA base plate stand), a suitable cross clamp and a stirring tool matched to the application, for example propeller, turbine, anchor or dissolver stirrers. A stirring shaft guard or a quick-release chuck can also be added if required. Through our procurement service , LT Laborhandel will gladly put together a suitable stirring set-up for you from our range of stirring and mixing technology .
Frequently asked questions
Is a stand included in the scope of delivery?
No, a stand, cross clamp and stirring tool are required for operation but are not included in the scope of delivery.
What is the maximum stirring volume possible with the RW 20 digital?
Up to 20 litres of water, at a maximum permissible viscosity of 10,000 mPas.
How do you switch between the two speed ranges?
Via a mechanical lever on the front of the unit, which should only be operated with the motor stopped.
Can the stirring tool be adjusted in height without moving the stand?
Yes, via the pass-through hollow shaft in the chuck, adjustable at standstill.
Is there an electronically controlled model as an alternative?
For more compact applications of up to 5 litres, the electronically controlled NANOSTAR 7.5 digital is suitable.
What happens if the stirring shaft is overloaded?
For a short time, an overload of up to 300 Ncm at the stirring shaft is permissible at 60 1/min; beyond that, the load should be reduced.
