To digest tissue, cartilage or bone samples prior to microbiological or molecular biological analysis without the sample coming into contact with reused instruments during processing: this is what the IKA UTTD control Tissue Solution is designed for. The system homogenises patient samples in hermetically sealed, single-use tubes; cross-contamination between samples is inherently prevented by the system’s sealed design.
Sealed single-use system for patient samples
Unlike open dispersion systems with reusable tools, with the UTTD control Tissue Solution the sample remains in the sealed tube throughout the entire processing procedure. According to the manufacturer, the maximum processing time per tube is limited to 1 minute. This combination of a sealed vessel and short processing time is well-suited to workflows in which samples from different patients are processed one after the other, without the need for a cleaning step on the tool between runs.
Drive with programmable speed
The ULTRA-TURRAX Tube Drive P control covers a speed range of 400 to 8,000 revolutions per minute, adjustable in increments of 10 rpm with a tolerance of 3 per cent. A digital timer and speed display are shown on an OLED screen, and the direction of rotation can be reversed. The drive also features a USB-B interface; the maximum viscosity of the sample is 5,000 mPas. The motor draws 36 watts and delivers 28 watts; the noise level without the tool is 50 dB(A).
IVD-compliant tubes included in the set
The set comprises the drive unit and a pack containing 50 BMT-20-S-IVD stainless steel tubes. Each tube is double-sterilised, pre-filled with 5 ml of 0.90 per cent NaCl saline solution and contains 10 stainless steel balls for the mechanical homogenisation of the sample. According to the manufacturer, the tubes are an in vitro diagnostic product in accordance with Directive 98/79/EC, manufactured to ISO 13485:2016 and, as per the manufacturer’s specifications, approved for use in all EU countries.
Distinction from open dispersion systems
For open samples without IVD requirements, IKA offers two disperser sets – the T 18 digital Solution and the more compact T 18 mini digital Solution – both featuring reusable tools and a stand. Both systems operate with significantly higher motor power – 500 and 210 watts respectively – and higher speeds of up to 25,000 rpm, but are not designed for contact with patient samples or to protect against cross-contamination. For those processing tissue, cartilage or bone samples in a diagnostic setting, the closed tube system of the UTTD control Tissue Solution is the right choice; the T 18 systems are better suited to the homogenisation of open samples in larger volumes.
Typical areas of application
The closed tube system is designed for diagnostic and microbiological applications:
- Microbiological and molecular biological analysis of patient samples
- Disintegration and digestion of tissue, cartilage and bone samples prior to analysis
- Diagnostic procedures with high requirements for protection against cross-contamination
- Short processing cycles of up to 1 minute per tube in routine operation

Contents
- 1 x ULTRA-TURRAX Tube Drive P control (drive unit)
- 1 x BMT-20-S-IVD.50 ball mixing vessel, stainless steel, sterile, IVD-compliant (pack containing 50 tubes, each 20 ml, double-sterilised, pre-filled with 5 ml of 0.90% NaCl solution, 10 stainless steel balls per tube)
Use and maintenance
The drive operates at 100 to 240 V at 50 to 60 Hz; internally, it runs on a DC voltage of 24 V with a current draw of 1,500 mA, which accommodates different mains voltages. IP 20 protection protects against contact, but not against splashing water; the drive unit should therefore be located in a dry area of the laboratory. The tubes are single-use items and must be disposed of in accordance with the applicable regulations for IVD waste following analysis. At the end of its service life, the drive unit, as an electrical appliance, must be disposed of via the separate collection scheme for waste electrical and electronic equipment and must not be placed in household waste.
Individual requirements & procurement service
For the UTTD control Tissue Solution, IKA stocks additional tube packaging units, including a single-sterilised version also containing 50 tubes of 20 ml each. Through our procurement service, we assist you with sourcing replacement tubes and advise on the most suitable system for your diagnostic workflows. An overview of other dispersers can be found in the Dispersers category.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is cross-contamination between samples prevented?
The sample remains in the hermetically sealed disposable tube throughout the entire processing procedure; contact with reused instruments is prevented by the design of the system.
What is the maximum processing time for a tube?
According to the manufacturer, the maximum processing time per tube is 1 minute.
Are the tubes approved for use with patient samples?
Yes, according to the manufacturer, the BMT-20-S-IVD tubes are an in vitro diagnostic product in accordance with Directive 98/79/EC, manufactured in accordance with ISO 13485:2016.
How does the system differ from the open T 18 dispersers?
The T 18 systems use reusable tools with open samples at significantly higher motor power and rotational speed, but are not designed to prevent cross-contamination of patient samples.
