Before first use and after each bottle change, the system must be vented, as with any piston burette, to ensure that no air bubbles in the cylinder affect the dosing accuracy. The return tube allows any accidentally dispensed excess titrant to be returned to the bottle, rather than having to restart the titration. Two brown-tinted light-protection windows shield light-sensitive titrants without the need to cover the bottle completely.
