Contents: T 18 digital drive unit. The dispersing tool shown is not included and is available separately.

Product information "IKA T 18 digital ULTRA-TURRAX disperser, tool-free drive unit, 500 W, 0003720000"

Anyone who frequently homogenises samples in the laboratory will be familiar with the problem: a good drive alone is not enough; ultimately, it is the right tool that determines the final fineness and throughput. The IKA T 18 digital ULTRA-TURRAX (0003720000) is designed precisely with this in mind. It is supplied as a drive unit only, with a power consumption of 500 watts, which can be freely combined with various S-18 tools for coarse, fine or single-use applications. The LED display shows the set speed – between 3,000 and 25,000 revolutions per minute – at all times, which facilitates reproducible results across multiple test runs.

Rotor-stator principle with high shear rates

During dispersion, the tool draws the sample in axially and forces it out radially through the narrow slots between the rotor and stator. This briefly generates very high shear rates, which break down solid components and mix liquids into stable emulsions or suspensions. With an output power of 300 watts and a processable volume of 0.001 to 1.5 litres (based on water), the T 18 digital covers typical laboratory batches up to a maximum viscosity of 5,000 mPas.

Stepless speed control with LED display

The speed can be adjusted continuously between 3,000 and 25,000 rpm, with a deviation of just 1 per cent according to the data sheet. Unlike purely analogue controllers, the LED display shows the set value directly. Once process parameters have been determined, they can be noted down and reproduced exactly for subsequent experiments. With a permissible duty cycle of 100 per cent, prolonged continuous operation is also possible without the drive having to pause in between.

The choice of tool determines the result

The T 18 digital is deliberately supplied without a dispersing tool, as the most suitable tool depends heavily on the specific sample. The standard S 18 N – 19 G tool with PTFE bearings is suitable for coarse pre-shredding and tougher media, whilst the S 18 N – 10 G offers a narrower gap geometry for finer end products. Those who frequently work with varying samples that are potentially susceptible to contamination will find disposable plastic tools to be a practical alternative, as they rule out cross-contamination between batches from the outset.

Typical areas of application

As a standalone drive unit, the T 18 digital is particularly suitable for laboratories that already work with a variety of tools or switch specifically between several applications:

  • Preparation of emulsions and suspensions in sample preparation
  • Homogenisation of tissue samples in biology and life sciences research
  • Mixing pigments and fillers into dispersions
  • Routine tasks in quality assurance with varying tool configurations
  • Setting up customised workstations through flexible combination with a stand and tool

Selection guide for the T-18 range

Drive unit only, complete set or just the tool? The four T-18 variants stocked by LT Laborhandel differ primarily in terms of what is included in the scope of delivery and, in the case of the mini-drive, in terms of motor power.

  • 1 x IKA T 18 digital ULTRA-TURRAX (drive unit, without dispersing tool)

The dispersing tool and stand are not included and must be purchased separately to suit the specific application.

Differences from the neighbouring series

If you also require a brushless motor with a timer, the IKA T 18 brushless series offers the next step up: the T 18 brushless digital ULTRA-TURRAX as a drive unit without an attachment, or the T 18 brushless digital Solution as a complete set. Both drive units operate with lower wear than the classic T 18 digital. An overview of all dispersers available from LT Laborhandel can be found in the ‘Dispersers’ category; suitable tools are listed under ‘Dispersing Tools’.

Application, set-up and maintenance

For short-term manual operation, the T 18 digital fits comfortably in the hand; for longer or reproducible processes, it can be securely mounted on a stand, such as the R 1826 plate stand. Operation is permitted at an ambient temperature of 5 to 40 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity of up to 80 per cent at 31 degrees Celsius, decreasing linearly to a maximum of 50 per cent at 40 degrees Celsius. The drive, with protection class IP 20, is not designed for use in damp rooms or outdoors. After each use, the tool used should be dismantled and, depending on the material, cleaned or sterilised before the next procedure begins. At the end of its service life, as an electrical appliance, the drive must not be disposed of with household waste but must be placed in the separate collection for waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Individual requirements & procurement service

In addition to the standard tools, LT Laborhandel supplies further accessories for the T 18 digital, such as stands, mounting elements or the Silentstream flow breaker to reduce air ingress during dispersion. IKA S 18 N - 10 G dispersing tool, Ø 10 mm, L004639
Herstellernummer: L004639

The IKA S 18 N - 10 G dispersing tool is a specialised, materials-science-optimised system component designed for precise rotor-stator dispersion in the millilitre range. Designed for use with the high-performance laboratory dispersers of the ULTRA-TURRAX T 18 series, this dispersing shaft enables highly efficient sample preparation of biological, pharmaceutical and chemical media. In applications such as the disruption of tissue cells, the emulsification of cosmetic formulations or the suspension of poorly soluble active ingredients in laboratory vessels, the precise fluid-dynamic geometry of this tool prevents thermal stress on samples and ensures complete homogenisation. For laboratory managers and procurement officers in industrial research facilities, this tool offers the highest level of validity and process reliability in accordance with stringent GLP and GMP guidelines. Rotor-stator kinetics and process shear dynamics The mechanical operating principle is based on the tried-and-tested rotor-stator system, in which the inner rotor moves within the fixed stator at extremely high rotational speeds of up to 25,000 revolutions per minute. Due to the small radial gap between the rotor and stator, the sample medium is drawn axially into the dispersion head and then forced radially through the slots of the generator with enormous kinetic energy. The combination of extremely high shear forces, turbulent shear fields and transient cavitation effects guarantees particle and droplet size reduction down to the micrometre range. The 10 G generator is characterised by an optimised tooth geometry, which enables rapid primary fragmentation of fibrous, tough or cellular sample structures across an extended volume range. Material resilience and sterilisation cycles The material-specific system limits of the dispersing tool are defined by the consistent use of high-quality stainless steel (material number 1.4404 / AISI 316L) and a robust PTFE bearing. This material composition ensures outstanding chemical resistance to aggressive acids, alkalis and organic solvents, and gently prevents metallic cross-contamination in multi-user operations. A crucial criterion for molecular biological and microbiological applications is the instrument’s unrestricted sterilisability: the entire dispersing instrument is fully autoclavable at 121 °C and can be hot-air sterilised up to 180 °C, thereby guaranteeing an absolutely germ-free sample handling process. Ergonomic design features and working area The mechanical design features a stator diameter of 10 millimetres and a shaft length of 108 millimetres, enabling reliable operation in various reaction vessels and laboratory glassware. The working range covers a sample volume of 1 to 100 millilitres, allowing flexible sample series to be processed efficiently whilst minimising material wastage. Thanks to the shaft’s easy disassembly, the tool can be cleaned quickly and thoroughly after use, significantly speeding up the laboratory’s workflow and minimising downtime. IKA S 18 N - 19 G Dispersing tool, coarse, PTFE bearings, 10 to 1,500 ml, L004640
Herstellernummer: L004640

The IKA S 18 N – 19 G (L004640) is the standard tool for coarse dispersion tasks on the IKA T 18 series drives, such as the T 18 digital ULTRA-TURRAX. The stainless steel tool covers a working range of 0.01 to 1.5 litres (10 to 1,500 millilitres, based on water) and is therefore the obvious choice for day-to-day sample preparation when rapid grinding and mixing are required. Toothed geometry for pre-grinding The letter G in the model designation stands for ‘coarse’. Unlike fine-grinding tools, the stator of this model features a coarsely serrated geometry with a gap width of 0.25 millimetres between the rotor and stator. This makes the S 18 N - 19 G the obvious choice for the pre-grinding of solid sample components, the mixing of pigments or fillers into coarse suspensions, and for viscous media that could clog finer tools. PTFE bearings for contact with aggressive media The rotor shaft is mounted in a PTFE bearing, as indicated by the letter ‘N’ in the model designation. PTFE is chemically almost inert, meaning the tool can be used with aggressive solvents, acids and alkalis without the bearing being affected. One important application note remains: PTFE bearings rely on the medium for lubrication and cooling; the tool must therefore not run dry, otherwise the resulting frictional heat will destroy the bearing. Hygiene and material quality Manufactured from electropolished AISI 316L stainless steel, the tool meets high hygiene standards. It is corrosion-resistant, durable and can be easily dismantled and sterilised for applications in the medical or microbiological fields, whether by chemical disinfection, dry heat or in an autoclave. This prevents cross-contamination between different sample batches. Typical applications According to the manufacturer, the S 18 N - 19 G is designed as a dispersing tool for the T 18 digital drive for volumes ranging from 10 to 1,500 millilitres. In practice, it is suitable for: Preliminary grinding of solid components in liquid samples Coarse suspensions containing pigments or fillers Viscous media that would be too viscous for finer tools Sample preparation with high requirements for chemical resistance Selection guide within the tool range In addition to the coarse version described here, LT Laborhandel stocks further tools for the T-18 drives with different gap geometries or made from different materials. The S 18 N - 10 G, with a narrower gap width, is suitable for finer end products; for single-use requirements and applications where no cleaning is required between samples, the plastic tools S 18 D - 10 G - KS and S 18 D - 14 G - KS are available. According to the manufacturer’s compatibility information, it is also compatible with the brushless drives T 18 brushless digital ULTRA-TURRAX, T 18 brushless digital Solution and the compact T 18 mini digital ULTRA-TURRAX. Use, maintenance and disposal Before first use, the tool should be securely screwed onto the drive unit and checked to ensure it is firmly in place. During operation, the tool must remain fully submerged in the medium at all times; the immersion depth ranges from 35 to 170 millimetres, depending on the container. After use, the tool can be detached from the drive unit for cleaning and, depending on requirements, chemically disinfected, treated with dry heat or autoclaved. As an accessory to an electrical appliance, the end-of-life tool must not be disposed of with household waste, but must be disposed of properly together with the associated drive unit. 100 per cent protection against cross-contamination: IKA S 18 D - 10 G - KS disposable dispersing tool In modern and highly sensitive laboratory environments, sample preparation often represents the most critical and error-prone step within the entire analytical chain. Particularly in fields such as forensics, medical diagnostics, PCR analysis or molecular biology research, even the tiniest carry-over of samples – known as cross-contamination – can have disastrous consequences. Not only do they ruin expensive and time-consuming experimental runs, but in the worst-case scenario they can lead to incorrect medical diagnoses or flawed forensic chains of evidence. The IKA S 18 D - 10 G - KS dispersing tool (MPN 0003452400) was developed precisely for these extremely demanding scenarios. This innovative single-use plastic tool, supplied in a cost-effective pack of 12, revolutionises your day-to-day laboratory work and sets entirely new standards in terms of safety, reliability and workflow efficiency. The problem of cross-contamination and the limitations of stainless steel tools Whilst traditional stainless steel dispersing tools are durable and robust, they present significant drawbacks when processing highly infectious or DNA-containing samples. To ensure that samples are 100 per cent free of germs and DNA between two samples, a stainless steel tool must be laboriously dismantled after every single dispersing operation, cleaned manually or by machine, and then sterilised at high temperatures in an autoclave. This process not only ties up valuable working time for highly qualified laboratory staff, but also requires the constant use of harsh chemicals and the regular replacement of wear parts such as PTFE bearings. The IKA S 18 D - 10 G - KS completely eliminates this entire cleaning and sterilisation cycle. Once the sample has been homogenised, the plastic tool is simply and safely disposed of in its entirety. This effectively reduces the risk of cross-contamination to zero, whilst at the same time freeing up enormous amounts of staff time and resources in the laboratory, which can then be used for actual analytical work. Technical superiority in a compact plastic format Despite being designed as a single-use item (identified by the abbreviation ‘KS’ for plastic), this dispersing tool offers no compromise whatsoever in terms of grinding performance. The tool operates on the tried-and-tested rotor-stator principle and is specifically designed for the high-performance dispersing drives of the IKA T 18 series (such as the T 18 digital, T 18 basic or T 18 mini). With a stator diameter of 10 millimetres (indicated by the “10” in the product designation), it is perfectly sized for processing small to medium sample volumes in the range of 10 to 100 millilitres (based on water). The abbreviation “G” stands for a coarse slot geometry on the stator. This geometry enables optimal suction of the sample into the shear gap and ensures rapid, efficient primary comminution of tough tissue, plant material or solid foodstuffs. Even at maximum speeds of up to 24,000 revolutions per minute, the high-quality plastic remains completely dimensionally stable and produces particle sizes that are ideally suited to downstream extraction processes. Economic considerations and workflow optimisation At first glance, the ongoing purchase of disposable tools may appear to be an additional cost factor. However, a detailed full-cost analysis in modern laboratories regularly reveals a very different picture: The purchase cost of an IKA S 18 D - 10 G - KS tool is generally significantly lower than the combined expenditure on labour for manual cleaning, the operating and maintenance costs for autoclaves, expensive chemical cleaning agents, and the regular procurement of spare parts for conventional stainless steel tools. By eliminating set-up and waiting times, laboratories can massively increase their sample throughput. The tool is simply fitted onto the drive, the sample is dispersed, and the tool is then ejected in a single step and disposed of properly. Numerous areas of application in highly specialised laboratories The potential applications of this plastic dispersion tool are extremely diverse and cover the most demanding areas of modern analytics. In forensics, it is used for the safe and absolutely contamination-free extraction of DNA or RNA from evidence such as skin, hair or tissue samples. In medical and clinical diagnostics, it enables the rapid homogenisation of biopsies, tumour cells or organ samples for pathology, without the risk of transmitting dangerous pathogens to laboratory staff or other valuable patient samples. This single-use tool is also the absolute first choice for reproducible work in pharmaceutical research – for example, when pulverising coated tablets for active ingredient analysis – or in strictly regulated food safety testing for the detection of pathogenic microorganisms in meat or plant samples. System integration for maximum safety (splash protection) To ensure the absolute highest level of user safety, the IKA S 18 D - 10 G - KS dispersing tool can be ideally combined with the appropriate IKA single-use tubes (such as the ET50 tube). This combination creates a fully enclosed system. This protects the user from hazardous, infectious or toxic aerosols that can inevitably be generated during the dispersion process under high centrifugal forces. The system remains completely sealed from homogenisation right through to disposal, which not only physically protects the user but also reliably and permanently prevents contamination of expensive laboratory equipment, pipettes and sterile fume cupboards. Maximum safety for larger volumes: the IKA S 18 D - 14 G - KS disposable dispersing tool In modern analytics, clinical diagnostics and life sciences research, the quality of sample preparation is becoming an increasingly important focus. The IKA S 18 D - 14 G - KS disposable dispersing tool (MPN 0003452300) has been specifically developed for laboratories where absolute purity is the top priority. As a high-performance accessory for the IKA T 18 dispersion drives (such as the T 18 digital or T 18 basic), this tool – made from high-quality medical-grade plastic – offers uncompromising homogenisation performance without the risks associated with traditional reusable systems. Supplied in a practical pack of 12, it is the first choice for daily high-throughput processing of medium to large sample volumes. The complete elimination of cross-contamination in everyday laboratory work The greatest enemy of reliable analytical results is sample carry-over, known as cross-contamination. When using conventional stainless steel homogenisation tools, even after the most thorough manual cleaning, microscopic residues of tissue, proteins or nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) often remain trapped in the fine gaps between the rotor and stator or within the PTFE bearing. In highly sensitive procedures such as PCR analysis (polymerase chain reaction), forensic evidence collection or sequencing, these minimal residues can lead to false-positive results. The IKA S 18 D – 14 G – KS completely eliminates this serious risk. As this is a purely single-use product, you use a completely fresh, unused instrument for each individual sample. After homogenisation, the entire plastic component, together with the potentially infectious or contaminated sample, is disposed of in accordance with best practice. There is absolutely no need for cleaning, rinsing or autoclaving, which raises process reliability to an unprecedented level. The 14-millimetre advantage: powerful for medium volumes In direct comparison with the smaller 10-mm tools, the S 18 D - 14 G - KS model stands out due to its significantly larger stator diameter of 14 millimetres. This design greatly expands the working range: you can homogenise volumes from 10 ml up to 500 ml (based on the viscosity of water) effortlessly and in the shortest possible time. The letter “G” in the product designation stands for a coarse slot geometry on the stator. This open geometry is of crucial importance when dealing with coarse-grained, tough or fibrous feed materials. Plant roots, pieces of meat, tablets or compact food samples are efficiently drawn into the shear gap by the powerful suction forces of the 14 mm rotor, where they are crushed and cut up at speeds of up to 24,000 revolutions per minute. The result is a fine, homogeneous suspension or emulsion that is perfectly prepared for subsequent extraction or analysis. Cost-effectiveness reimagined: Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) A common objection to single-use laboratory items is the seemingly higher cost of materials. However, when a realistic full-cost analysis (Total Cost of Ownership) is carried out, the IKA S 18 D system often proves to be the significantly more cost-effective solution. Consider the hidden costs of a stainless steel tool: highly qualified laboratory staff spend hours every day dismantling, scrubbing and reassembling the tools. Added to this are the running costs for distilled water, aggressive cleaning chemicals, energy consumption and the maintenance of autoclaves, as well as the inevitable wear and tear on ball bearings and seals. The single-use plastic tool S 18 D – 14 G – KS eliminates the need for all these steps. You drastically reduce your labour costs per sample, minimise downtime and can significantly increase throughput in your laboratory. Staff can focus on value-adding analytical tasks rather than carrying out washing duties. A wide range of applications in strictly regulated environments The areas of application for the 14-mm plastic tool are as diverse as they are demanding. In food testing, it is used to detect pesticide residues or pathogenic organisms in large meat or vegetable samples without transferring allergens from one sample to the next. In clinical pathology, it enables the safe processing of infected patient tissue. In pharmaceutical research, it is indispensable for the homogeneous homogenisation of pharmaceutical formulations for active ingredient release testing. Maximum user protection through system integration For work involving particularly critical media, the tool offers a further unbeatable advantage: it can be perfectly combined with IKA disposable tubes (e.g. the ET50 tube). Simply attaching the tube to the tool shaft creates a completely self-contained system. When dispersing at maximum speed, hazardous aerosols, toxic vapours or infectious splashes cannot escape into the laboratory environment or the fume cupboard. This not only protects your valuable analytical equipment from contamination, but above all safeguards the health of your staff. IKA Silentstream flow breaker for dispersers, minimises air ingress, 0003754000
IKA Silentstream flow breaker for dispersers, minimises air ingress, 0003754000
Herstellernummer: 0003754000

Perfect emulsions without unwanted air entrapment: the IKA Silentstream flow breaker In demanding product development, cosmetic formulation, food technology and chemical synthesis, high-performance dispersion is one of the most important, yet physically demanding, methods of sample preparation. When a dispersing tool based on the rotor-stator principle operates in an open beaker or reactor at speeds of 10,000 to 25,000 revolutions per minute, it not only generates enormous shear forces to break down the particles. At the same time, a massive rotational flow is generated within the liquid. This flow inevitably leads to the formation of a deep, crater-shaped vortex – known as a ‘trombe’. This vortex often extends right down to the stator’s suction ports. The fatal consequence: the disperser continuously draws in massive quantities of ambient air into the liquid medium. It is precisely to address this serious process-related problem that IKA has developed the innovative Silentstream accessory (MPN 0003754000). This intelligent flow baffle is the ultimate solution for reducing air ingress to an absolute minimum and significantly improving the quality of your dispersions. The negative consequences of air entrapment in everyday laboratory work Why is air in a dispersed sample so extremely harmful? The unwanted introduction of air through vortex formation causes three major problems in everyday laboratory work: Firstly, the entrained air leads to excessive foaming. Highly foaming samples (such as protein-containing solutions or surfactant-containing shampoos) overflow from the beaker, contaminate the workstation and result in the loss of valuable sample material. Secondly, microscopic air bubbles ruin the physical stability and texture of fine emulsions. A high-quality cosmetic cream or pharmaceutical ointment produced with air entrapments looks unattractive, feels dull on the skin and is prone to rapid phase separation (coalescence). Thirdly – and this is the most critical point for analytical purposes – constant contact with atmospheric oxygen at extreme shear rates leads to severe oxidation. Ingredients susceptible to oxidation, such as valuable vitamins, highly sensitive active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) or unsaturated fatty acids in food samples, are inevitably destroyed by this process, which completely skews the subsequent analysis. The physical solution: the flow breaker principle The IKA Silentstream tackles the physical cause of this problem head-on. The ring-shaped component is simply slid from below over the shaft of the dispersing tool (for example, the T 25 series) and positioned within the liquid medium. Thanks to its specially calculated, asymmetrical geometry, the Silentstream acts as a highly effective flow disruptor (flow disruptor). It disrupts the uniform rotational movement of the liquid generated by the rapidly rotating rotor. The liquid is slowed down by the Silentstream and redirected into a chaotic, predominantly axial flow. The result is absolutely astonishing: The rotation of the entire fluid mass comes to a near standstill, the surface of the medium instantly stabilises and the deep, air-sucking vortex disappears completely. The disperser can continue to operate at maximum speed and full grinding capacity, but now draws in only pure liquid instead of a destructive air-liquid mixture. Time savings and cost-effectiveness (TCO) in production In addition to the dramatic improvement in the quality of your end products, using the IKA Silentstream offers an invaluable economic advantage. If you have previously had to disperse highly foaming samples, you will be familiar with the problem of extremely long waiting times: you had to switch off the disperser after just a few seconds and wait for the voluminous foam to subside before you could continue the process. Alternatively, you had to add expensive chemical defoamers (antifoam agents), which distorted the chemical composition of your pure sample. With the Silentstream, these forced pauses are completely eliminated. You can complete the dispersion process in a single, continuous and rapid pass. This drastically reduces process times in your laboratory, increases daily sample throughput and significantly lowers the laboratory’s total cost of ownership for sample preparation. Occupational health and safety and seamless system integration A further positive side effect of the stabilised liquid surface is the substantial improvement in occupational health and safety. As the strong vortex and chaotic wave formation against the vessel wall are suppressed, the splashing of potentially hazardous, hot or toxic sample liquids out of the open beaker is extremely effectively prevented. The fume cupboard remains clean, and staff are protected. The Silentstream is manufactured from high-quality, chemical-resistant materials that easily withstand the common solvents, acids and alkalis encountered in everyday laboratory work. Thanks to its flow-optimised design, it can be cleaned very easily and thoroughly after use, leaving no residue, which prevents dangerous cross-contamination between different sample batches and ensures compliance with strict GLP guidelines. Invest in this unassuming yet technologically outstanding accessory to realise the full potential of your IKA disperser and produce flawless, air-free and highly stable dispersions. Technical data Function: Flow breaker / flow stabiliser (baffle) Mode of action: Prevents vortex formation and the ingestion of air Analytical benefit: Prevents oxidation of sensitive active ingredients and foam formation Quality benefit: Produces homogeneous, air-bubble-free emulsions and suspensions Health and safety benefit: Prevents the medium from being ejected at high speeds Compatibility: Designed for mounting on the shaft of IKA dispersion tools (ideally for standard tool diameters of the T 25 series) Handling: Can be slid onto the tool shaft without the need for tools Cleaning: Easy-to-clean, chemical-resistant surfaces Contents of delivery 1 x IKA Silentstream flow breaker (Important note: The essential IKA drive motor, as well as the dispersing tool and the stand system, are available separately and are expressly not included in this scope of delivery.) Individual requirements & accessories To make the best use of this accessory, you will need a high-performance drive such as the IKA T 25 digital or T 25 easy clean control, as well as the appropriate dispersion tool (e.g. from the S 25 N series). If, despite the Silentstream, you are working with extremely volatile solvents that must not be allowed to escape into the ambient air, we recommend switching to fully vacuum-sealed reactor systems with the corresponding KD dispersing tools. Our experienced procurement service will be happy to advise you on selecting the ideal tool sizes and establishing optimal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for your foam-free sample preparation.
